Well, an awful lot must have changed in the past two years as this hotel is fantastic! Great location, friendly staff, lovely rooms etc...
Am so glad I read more recent reviews on other sites, before booking. Would return over and over again.

Very poor hotel. Would never stay there again – cramped, not very clean. A few very nice members of staff but a few people working there who should not be in the hotel business – abrupt, ignorant and not in the least welcoming. The sort of people who give Italians a bad name. Indeed, Italians in general could work a little on their manners.

You're going to pay a bunch to eat well Other than great pizza, food in Venice that is edible is expensive. Go ahead and splurge.

See Venice & escape the crowds Escape the crowds and get the best view of Venice - get a 'vaporetto' across to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, spend an hour or so in a beautiful Palladian church and go to the top of the Campanile (3 Euros) with the most spectacular views across city.
