I had great difficulty with inconsistency among management who for the most part were much less than accommodating. Expense of the rooms and especially room service outweighed the value returned even with the ambience, which I would rate highly. I wouldn't stay there for our next visit.

Top Local Tips for Venice

Go for style Avoid Harry's bar (the bellinis are OK but too pricey and nothing special) - head for the Gritti Palace Hotel. The Hotel is beautiful and worth seeing - the barman was talkative and with the cocktails (the Gritti Special) came hors d'ouevres (gratis). There is so much in Venice and I never felt in a safer place.

Last minute bargains and taxis Most basic accomodation comes in arounf €150-200 for a small B&B/hotel. However try looking for 4/ 5 star hotels with empty rooms and try your luck. The vapretto service to and from the airport is deadly slow and frustrating and costs €12 per person. Get a private water taxi for a small group for €90 and the experience is fantastic

Getting to the Hotel Very little information was available about how to get to the Bauer Hotel so follow this guide for a cheap and very easy arrival from Marco Polo Airport. When entering arrivals lounge at Marco Polo turn left and buy a ticket from the Tourist Office for the bus into Venice at 2 euros each. Head straight out of the front of the airport and directly in front you will see bus stand number 5. This bus will take you directly into Venice’s main Bus depot call Plazza Roma. It will take about 30 minutes to arrive here. When you get on the bus put your ticket into the small machine to get it stamped. Once you have arrived at Plazza Roma head directly forwards towards the main canal (20 yards away) and locate the Vaporettos (large boats which act as the local transport system). You will find a ticket office in the middle of all the Vaporettos where you will need to ask for a ticket to San Marco (4 euros each). Once you have bought your Vaporetto ticket you will need to head towards Stand Number 1 where you can board a Vaporetto which will take you to the San Macro stop. This journey along the main canal will take about 50 minutes. When you arrive at San Macro head straight up the main street (about 50 yards) and take the first left, after a further 30 yards you should find the Bauer hotel on your left.
