I had no complaints whatsoever about the Doni during my four-night stay. I am very familiar with Venice, having been there dozens of time, so I am speaking from a somewhat informed position. The location is ideal, on a small canal parallel to the one that the Birdge of Sighs crosses and only a few minutes from the Piazza San Marco and the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop. Every single staff member was friendly, helpful, and polite. The breakfast was more than adequate. I thoroughly recommend the Doni.

This was a great hotel at a low cost through Rick Steves' Italy 2005 book. I traveled with my mother, sister and 2 teenage nieces. Although the rooms were small, they were clean and comfortable. The canal we were on was a quiet and pretty one. We saw a bride pose for formal photography one morning. The one downside was only 1 or 2 rooms face the canal. The view from most rooms was a rather cluttered courtyard. We thought we had confirmed canal view, so we were a little disappointed. The breakfast was cozy and always enough food to fuel us up for another great day in Venice.

Top Local Tips for Venice

Get a Map Get a good walking map of Venice. Very helpful for getting around since the city is very poorly laid out and has confusing streets. I studied ours over lunch and we just started to walk, never got lost with the map in hand.

Money Exchange Do not exchange money at the Venice airport. They rate was terrible and they tacked on a big commission fee. I found a little travel agency about a 2 minute walk from my hotel in the San Marco area. The "street" it was on was Campo SS Filippo E Giacomo, I wish I could remember the name of the place. They had a great exchange rate and no commission fees.

Coffee Even if you don't like coffee, try a cappucino, even in a chain shop. I can't explain it, but coffee just tastes so much better in Italy.
