Top Local Tips for Venice

Do your research ahead of time Window shop for a day before buying anything. Merchants all over the island sell the same wares and at greatly varying prices. Gondoliers will charge whatever you are willing to pay. Ask first. The set price by Venice is 80e for 40 min. You will pay a bit more if you want them to act as a tour guide, ie. point things out. And you will pay a bit more in the evening. The price should not double, only increase by 20e or so. We did not need an ACTV pass(public water bus pass) as we only used it upon arrival and departure, we walked everywhere else. We did not need the VeniceCard. We were there for three days and visited Basilica, Accademia and Doge's palace. We came out ahead by not buying the card. Venice is a wonderful city, there is nothing to compare it to.

Getting around Venice Luggage on wheels is helpful as you have to tough it ou tif you go everywhere via public transportation. But if you have money then do get a private taxi and have them haul you from the airport or cruise liner to whever you are staying and back out again. Bag packs are also troublesome as they take up room in public transport and you tend to get knocked around a bit during heavy travel times or stop locations. So try to get into your hotel with your luggage and break it down in your room and then have some smaller, lighter backpack or across the shoulder bag for carrying cameras and layers of necessary clothing. This city is not for the faint of heart ... there is nothing but walking and boats so have great grabby shoes! Starting off a day with layers of clothes is helpful in the spring, when I went for sometimes days change radically temperature wise. DON'T LEACE WITHOUT TAKING A GONDOLA RIDE! Nothing like it!
