Was I in the same hotel as the other reviewers?

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights in early June, based on the glowing reviews of this board. Yes, the hotel has a great view of Lake Como, however, if you're looking for a more upscale property, this is not it. Breakfast and dinner were good. But what I really can't understand are all the positive Trip Advisor comments about the hosts. The owner was not only unpleasant to us most of the time, she actually bordered on rude. It got to the point that we were reluctant to ask her anything because we were always put off in a curt and indifferent manner. We were with another couple and both of us felt we were treated rather poorly. No, I would not book at this hotel again.

Heaven On Earth

What a delight! Egidio and Bettina and Assistants were wonderful hosts. As busy as they were, they always had time to talk to their guests. Dining at the hotel is a must. Egidio is a great chef. He takes extreme pride in his dishes, and the food is beautifuly presented. Try the sea bass, and the lamb if they are available. The fixed price menu varies from night to night. Excellent value for the quality of the food. Our room was on the upper floor above the terraces and the view from the balcony was beyond belief. The room was large, and recently renovated so there was more than adequate space. The bathroom was modern and certainly large enough. Every morning at 7:30 we were gently awakened by the musical church bells. We certainly would return.

Quiet Elegance

We wish we'd stayed longer at Albergo Milano. An unbeatable value - the least expensive hotel we booked on our entire trip and the most for the money. I highly recommend either room 1 or 2 with the huge balcony. The terraces aren't exactly private - we had some talkative neighbors who chatted it up with the couple staying on the floor above - but the views are remarkable. We loved pulling up the lounge chairs and enjoying a book with the panoramic lake view to distract us!

Bettina and Edigo are wonderful hosts. An earlier poster commented perfectly that they are helpful without being "overly familiar". Staff is at your beck and call - but only when and if you want them.

The room itself was smallish - I wouldn't want to have giant suitcases - but it is quite sufficient. The bathroom is newly remodeled with sleek iridiscent glass tile and a very large shower. I'm embarassed to admit that my husband and I couldn't quite figure out the bed linens. Our bed was made with a bottom sheet and two down duvets on top. We assume they were intended to be used as individual personal duvets, but I'm still not 100% certain. That was certainly our problem and nothing to do with the hotel itself - just a funny aside I thought I may mention.

The restaurant at Albergo Milano is fantastic. If they had been open both nights of our stay, we would have eaten there twice! But, as it was, they were only open once. The menu was a refreshing, creative take on Italian classics. The carrot soup was divine! A fantastic gourmet meal at a most modest price.

Varenna is the perfect setting for this perfect hotel - both are quiet, sleepy and unbelievably romantic.

We stayed at Albergo Milano for 5 nights in late April 2006 - had stayed there in 2002 for a single night before a Rick Steves Trip.
A delightful stay in a nicely upgraded cozy 8-room hotel with a great staff. Owners 'Egy' & Bettina, and Maria, are excellent hosts. Try to have their wonderful dinner at least once during your stay (or, perish the thought, if you are staying elsewhere - book this dinner for an evening!).
Varenna is one of those special places for us - quiet and beautiful with easy access to many other venues close by. Look forward to a return visit here!

Beautiful decorated rooms recently renovated.

Small hotel with eight rooms some with wonderful view of Lake Como. Well decorated and newly renovated rooms with beautiful baths, beds and linens. Managed and owned by delightful couple. He is the chef and serves every night except Sunday and Tuesday ....some of the best food we had on our two week stay in Italy...Rome, Florence and Cinque Terra. Parking is available but unable to drive up to the hotel. Near the parking garage in the small town of Varenna. Hope I can return soon, B. A. Wood, Mobile, AL. Wonderful and charming place on Lake Como

We recently returned from a 3 night stay in Varenna, not in the Albergo Milano but in the apartment which the owners look after - Casa Mezzo (the hotel was full on the dates we required). The owners Egidio and Bettina are simply wonderful and we ate breakfast at Albergo Milano every day as well as dinner on 2 nights which was absolutely delicious and something you must do (we could not eat on the 3rd night as the owners were having a well-deserved night off!). We were here for my 50th birthday and it was certainly a trip to remember. We were helped so much by the owners, restaurant reservations, taxis etc. - nothing was too much trouble. The weather was not brilliant during our trip but I can tell you we will certainly be back to stay in the Albergo Milano when good weather is hopefully guaranteed because the views and scenery are just so wonderful. We visited Bellagio for the day via the ferry which was extremely efficient and it is very pretty but certainly more "touristy" that charming Varenna and we were happy to be "coming home" to our little village on the other side of the lake. Bettina and Egidio are opening up some more rooms soon so get booking - you will not be disappointed! My husband and I wish Bettina and Egidio every success because they certainly deserve it! Wonderful experience

Arrived in the rain and Maria met us on the road to help unload the luggage. Wonderful dinner and breakfast not to mention the fabulous accomodations. View, bed, bath, etc. all five star at very reasonable rates. Prepaid the first night to guarantee and paid the balance when checking out. Check out the small restaurant down the street on the left going to the middle of town...do not remember the name but the hotel can recommend. Very special...

My favourite little hotel

As you can see from previous reviews, everyone loves this hotel and with good reason.

We stayed for one night in mid-March and I was really sorry to leave. Despite the unusually cool weather in March, I would have been happy to hang-out for several more days. The town is pretty and the hotel's location is ideal.

We were greeted warmly by Bettina and all of needs were met with ease. The star of the show is the lakeview and you should definitely book a room with a terrace or balcony.

I have already told all of my friends about this place. We will definitely be back!

Albergo Milano was the first stop on our three week Italy adventure. After an all night flight to Milan and a train ride to Varenna we were fairly spent. After a bit of searching, we finally found the hotel.

We were greeted by the owner, who was very friendly. She brought us up to our room and showed us around. It was a very nice room. Modern new furniture, light and airy, and a spacious bathroom. The bed was very comfortable. We had a side room which the terrace overlooked the lake and the gardens.

We made dinner reservations at the hotel restaurant when we booked our room. I am really glad we did. The meal and the atmosphere were excellent. We had a gourmet meal on the terrace overlooking Lake Como and the sun set. The meal, prepaired by the owner, was one of the best. A meal prepared with only fresh ingredients, a bottle of Prosecco, and a warm Italian sunset over Lake Como; we felt like we were dropped into "Shangri La". Actually, we booked dinner reservations for the next night also.

They do have a cat, Sashimi, who has the run of the hotel. He visited us in our room one evening. If that is a problem, they will do their best to keep him away.

We highly reccommend the Albergo Milano to anyone traveling to Varenna. We look forward to returning there in the near future.

The hotel is well worth the price. The room we stayed in was very nice and the terrace outside our room was nearly the same size as our hotel in Paris. The people running the hotel are very nice and helpful. I would recommend this hotel to everyone. Be sure to eat at the hotel at least once while staying there. On a side note... when in the city of Como it self do not eat eat at the first place right off the fairy I wish I remembered the name but just avoid the first one directly across from the fairy. The food was frozen and heated up in a microwave. Unless you want Lean Cuisine eat somewhere else.

Top Local Tips for Varenna

Local Ferries Get a ferry day pass for just 10 euros and take a full day to explore each of the major towns (mennagio, bellagio, and varenna) at your own pace. This place is one of the most beautiful in Italy - closest place in beauty is Amalfi.

Varenna Chose Varenna because there was a railway station within walking distance of Hotel. Plus ferry station within walking distance of hotel. Easy access to other villages and towns without hiring a car.Hotel has good restaurant but near to other restaurants and bars so there is a good choice not the place for night life or shopping but get on the boat to Bellagio. Ideal spot, ideal hotel.

Transfer from / to Milan airports Just make the taxi reservation from / to Milan airports with the hotel desk in order to avoid price surprise from Milan taxi drivers.
