Great views...and little else!
from audanteFood: Breakfast basic with very little choice. Just a couple of cooked meats and cheese plus croissants/white bread and preserves. Coffee/tea and orange juice (which ran out when we were there and never replaced that morning.)
Evening meal: pasta or soup to start and little meat and peas or cabbage for main course plus self-service salad bar (same every night) Food over cooked and often inedible. Food you order at the bar (delivered from same kitchen) is more edible (just). Staff are gracious and try their best but the hotel wants a re-vamp of its older rooms (there is a modern/recent wing) and better food at a slightly higher charge wouldn't be a problem.
We were looking forward to this holiday. Our experience at the hotel has made sure we'll never visit Sorrento again!!!
Good little hotel - and Directions!
from LittleBritainOn many other reviews I have read how difficult it is to find the hotel - well - go straight through Sorrento. At certain times of the day you are not able to drive down the main shopping street; if this is the case then turn left and follow this road until you rejoin the sea. Just past the Hotel Cavour there is a junction with lots of white road markings. The main road bends round to the right - take the road that goes straight on - and follow this up the hill for 4 miles until you reach Don Pedros restaurant - the hotel is just past here. We ate in Don Pedros - very good but quite expensive.
great views, friendly hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberAlthough the hotel is a 10-15 minute bus ride from the centre of Sorrento, (too far to walk on busy road), the hotel provides a shuttle bus 6 times a day. In addition the public bus stops just down from the hotel and runs much more frequently, only costs 1 euro and runs until midnight. Ask hotel reception for bus tickets and time table.
We were glad that we didn't stay at a hotel in the centre of Sorrento since many of the hotels were on the main road, which was busy and noisy. It was great to return to La Vue D'or in the afternoon, eve and enjoy a drink in the peace and quiet and appreciate the stunning views.
The hotel staff were all very friendly, rooms quite basic but very clean, great food, lovely pool area and views. Would recommend this hotel.
stunning views
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe staff were very friendly and helpful and the hotel was very clean.
The rooms were spacious, and having air conditioning was a bonus.
The only disappointing thing was the food, the breakfast was a selection of cold meats, cheese, rolls ( not always fresh), and sweet crossiants, orange juice, coffee and tea. No hot choice was offered.
The dinners were cooked well but the choice was limited with the vegetable choice for the 4 days we stayed was the same every night! There were 3 main choices for the main, meat, fish or chicken dishes, unfortuntely the same dishes always came up, grilled fish, chicken in a tomatoe sauce or veal with lemon. Most of the starters were pasta based so you were full before the main course.
Overall the hotel was good, the views stunning over the bay of Naples and the excellent local bus service and hotel courtsey bus was always on time.
This hotel could easily become a 4 star hotel with a wider choice of menu or maybe a resident chef and a suggestion of some night entertaiment as there was plenty of room in the dining room for a small group or single performer a couple of nights per week.
A really enjoyable stay at Sorrento and I would go again to this hotel for the peace and quiet and stunning views.
Way too far away
from A TripAdvisor MemberI made my reservation at La Vue based on Trip Advisor ratings. I read that the distance was great but the shuttle service was frequent enough that it would not be an issue. We arrived and took a taxi from the train station, took a taxi to the hotel and was charged $38. Euros. The train stating is basically in the city center, so I hope this gives you an idea of the distance and expense of transportation.
The hotel was nice. The views were nice. We were just so secluded and the hotel is such a distance from the main city where you walk around and go eat. We had a 2 year old with us. There was no refrigerator in the room and no food available to eat in off hours. Normally this is fine, except when you are so far away from any place to eat.
My last point is the shuttle service going to town. It runs at 9, 9:30, 12:20P, 5:45 P, 7:30 and 9( I think there is one at 9). So, if you wake up late and miss the first 2 buses, you are just sitting around at the hotel for several hours until the 12:20 shuttle. It was unbearable for us and to the Hotel's credit, they did let us out of our reservation. We check into a hotel in Sorrento called 'The Carlton International' and it was perfect for us, although it was more expensive.
Brilliant
from A TripAdvisor MemberFood was ok
from A TripAdvisor MemberCapri is rubbish. Fifty quid (75 euros) for a family of four on the ferry (20 minutes) and your hand is in your pocket all the time you are there. Its another boat trip (32 euros) to the blue grotto or three bus journeys! Are they kidding or what - the whole island is just four miles by two. Then you have to pay another 34 euros for a 15 minute ride in a rowing boat. Complete rip-off. Paid 19 euros for a small bottle of lager and two ice creams and came home. Avoid at all costs.
Pompei is good, but tiring. Take the bus and train - it's cheap and quicker than the car. Hire an audioguide for 5 euros; there's even a special one for children. Take plenty of water as there's just the single restaurant inside. If you are planning a trip to Herculaneum another day then buy a double ticket to save a bit of money.
Clean, friendly with great views
from spirit59Enjoyed our stay and we would def stay again.
Room With a View?
from Just-We-Two-WalesThe hotel itself is in the style typical of Southern Italian buildings with its ochre walls and terracotta roof tiles. The facade is very attractive with its lush Mediterranean plants, balconies and shuttered windows. The reception area is very light and airy and the staff at the reception desk are courteous and helpful and speak very good English.
The hotel is in two parts. The main building contains the reception area, dining room and approximately half the rooms, whilst at the rear there is a separate and obviously newer wing of modern design with tiered balconies overlooking the swimming pool/sun terrace and providing great views over the Bay.
After our arrival, we discovered that the accommodation within this new block is much more luxurious than the accommodation we had within the main building by virtue of it being newer. If you visit the hotel's own website, it is the interiors of these rooms which you will see. Our room was less well appointed but perfectly adequate nevertheless....with one exception! The lack of air conditioning... which is essential during the summer months in such a climate! Apparently, only rooms in the new block have this as standard and we were not made aware of this beforehand. So, if you are considering staying at the hotel in summertime we suggest that you request such a room. Also, it is possible to request a room with a Bay view, but this carries with an extra charge. That said, the view is so spectacular it would be well worth it.
One area where the hotel does not score very highly is in terms of the food it provides. The dining room is large and well appointed with friendly and efficient waiters. However, do not expect traiditional Italian cuisine! Whilst they do the various pastas ok, the remaining main courses are bit bland and hit and miss to say the least! Breakfast is fine in the typically continental style but, were we to stay at the hotel again, we would probably opt for B&B and eat out in the town each evening.
Because of its position high above the town, walking there isn't really an option. Therefore, the hotel has its own minibus shuttle service to transport guests to and from the centre of Sorrento at set times during the day. However, it only holds 20 passengers so at peak times be prepared to wait a little longer whilst the bus has to make a couple of round trips. Its really a case of first come, first served!
Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would return again but in the knowledge of the factors we have noted above.
A Relaxing, Family Run Hotel
from coisty71We booked up on line and used Easy Jet Flights to reach Naples. A couple of days prior we phoned the hotel to ask about the best means of reaching the hotel from the airport. They advised that they had an arrangement with a local taxi firm who organised a pick up for the 5 of us (plus luggage) from the airport direct to the hotel for 90 Euros. This is not bad given that the local taxis in Sorrento would quote 40 Euros to take you from the town up the hill to the Hotel.
Getting to the hotel at about 9:30pm we were met by the friendly staff and shown to our rooms. The sea views are stunning - the bedrooms are very clean and are more than adequate with nice balconies and freshly decorated bathrooms. The towels in the room are on the thin side however and as commented by other contributors, not particularly absorbent.
We would recommend to do what we did and go B&B only. The hotel food in the evening did not look inspiring. The breakfast was fine (buffet) and lunch snacks at the pool were also adequate (omelettes etc.).
The main thing you have to get used to when using the hotel is to plan your day to manage the journeys to and from Sorrento using the complementary mini-bus or the local bus that also runs past the hotel. The hotel will provide you with timetables and it is not a problem to manage - just takes some getting used to. E.g the the last bus home from Sorrento leaves at 23:30 - and the last corporation bus at midnight.
One major complement I would give the staff is their Customer service. On our first night we wanted to go out for some food and we didn't particularly want to get the bus down to Sorrento. The receptionist got in her car and personally drove us 1km down the hill to a charming restaurant (Il Borgo) which had great food and views (although one waiter did appear to be from the Fawlty Towers School). She then came back in 2 hours to pick us up. Superb.
Overall we enjoyed our stay greatly. B&B meant nice breakfast, trips out or day by the pool on the excellent terraces with breathtaking views to sunbathe in then in the evening, a beer on the terrace before taking the bus to Sorrento for our evening meal. A very relaxing experience and I would definitely go back.
Top Local Tips for Sorrento
Travel with the locals Use local buses and trains - very cheap and frequent - even for visiting tourist sites such as Pompeii - it's easy to do and a fraction of the cost of identical trips arranged by tour operators. 1 euro public bus ticket lasts for 90 minutes in and around town, hopping on & off bus as you wish. 15 euros gets a return train ticket to Naples, approx. 60 minutes journey through interesting scenery).
don't take a taxi! Contact the hotel before hand and get the shuttle location and time schedule as it is free and taxis are very expensive!
Park your rental car and take the bus !! The roads are precarious at best ! Park your rental car at the hotel, they have great free parking. Take the bus into town and take buses and ferry boats everywhere else . The local drivers know how to manage these roads. And it will prevent a migraine !!
