t stay there again...
from ClaphamLondonWhen we moved over the following morning to stay in the Villa Maria they put us back into a detached room even though we were told we were to be upgraded and told the person we had spoken to knew nothing! We then had to ask to be moved as our room was again on the road and extremely noisy. We then had to pay 90 Euros extra for another room away from the traffic, this was the upgraded room that had been promised!
I wouldn't stay there again, the breakfast was not anything to write home about and whilst the reception were quite friendly it was too much of a package holiday hotel for my taste.
unfriendly and dishonest

A GEM OF A HOTEL
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe staff is highly trained, pleasant and accommodating. One gets the family feel in this hotel yet you know it's operated by professionals.
A solid value. A completely comfortable and carefree place to stay, time and again.
Loved the location, close to Town Centre.

from A TripAdvisor MemberVilla Maria a home from home
from A TripAdvisor MemberWe are always made very welcome by all the staff and nothing is to much trouble for themto make your stay a relaxed and happy one.The breakfasts & evening meals are varied and of good quality for a 3* hotel. The decoration and cleanliness of the hotel is of a very good standard. The bedrooms & bathrooms are also very clean. Our only gripe is the shower cubicle is small but functional.
The pool and bar area is a very pleasant place to top up your tan or enjoy a freshly prepared light lunch. There is also a roof terrace solarium if you want some peace to read or just laze in the sun. A hydromassage pool and sauna (paid locally) are for the more adventurous, it is very good, we do use them.
Only a 10 minute stroll away is the beautiful town of Sorrento. The people are very friendly & hospitable, we have tried to learn Italian and this appreciated. A cafe you must visit is the Cafe Monna Lisa set amidst the cobbled streets off Corsa Italia, it is a must, it's the only place we know where you get a smiley face on your Cappuchino, everything is presented with that little extra touch. Try it for yourself and see what we mean, the staff are very friendly and helpful.
The cafe in the Communial gardens is also a very pretty place to enjoy a coffee, watch the world go by, and a view to die for overlooking the bay of Naples.
Sorrento and the Amalfi coast is a wonderful area to visit with something for everyone. The local transport is good so everywhere is easy to get to. We love the area so much we have already booked to go back in 2005, a week in the hotel Posa Posa in Positano (run by the same family)and a week in the hotel Villa Maria, where we will be greeted like old friends.
Very Comfortable Hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe room was excellent having a bathroom with a large shower (including seat!) with a good flow of water with reliable temperature control. This was very welcome as it was hot and sunny all week and a refreshing shower was needed after each visit to town. The towels provided were the fluffy variety we are used to using in the UK not the "tea-towels" often found in Italian hotels.
The standard of cleanliness in restaurant, corridors and room (cleaned/towels replaced every day while we were at breakfast) was excellent.
The air conditiong was superb.
The buffet breakfast was really good with a good choice of bread, pastries, croissants etc. The fruit juice (orange or pineapple) was poor.
Evening meals were OK if a little boring after a few days. The staff were very friendly and helpful and did not expect you to wait for anything.
The pool area was a little scruffy at times. Some of the loungers are broken and these tended to have the mattrasses on them to hide the damage. We used to swap the mattrasses to a good bed then leave a book /towel on them while we had breakfast. I did see the staff swap the good bed back to a damaged one on a couple of occasions.
Nevertheless the area was good for sunbathing once we got round this problem which we found more amusing than annoying.
Although the hotel is close to the main road we had no problem with noise from traffic as most of the rooms are down a side road.
The walk into the town takes only a few minutes through busy traffic. We recommend the Bouganvilla diner/gelateria for mouth-watering crepes and absolutely excellent coffee. This is very close to the hotel.
Sorrento town is very busy and "touristy" and although we really enjoyed our holiday we will probably return to Amalfi when taking a holiday on the Neapolitan Riveria again.
Loved this hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberWe had a fifth floor room with a balcony with views over the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. There was a little table and 2 chairs on the balcony to enjoy the view in comfort. The french windows on to the balcony were shuttered. The air conditioning was great. Room was clean and neat with tiled floor and cool white cotton bed linen.
Bathroom had a marble wash hand basin, loo, bidet, hairdryer (which was a little slow to dry!) and a free standing shower cubicle. White italian "Frette" towels were supplied - only the best! The bathroom was great but, often, as there was no ventilation, somewhat steamy! They could really improve on that.
The breakfast was generous, with an impressive banquet table of delights every morning
(melon/cakes/crossiants/bread rolls/scrambled eggs/ham and cheeses/yoghurts etc). (However, we thought the sweetened orange and pineapples juices on offer were unnecessary as the area grows such great fruit!)
The staff were friendly and on our arrival supplied maps and recent transport/ferry timetables to Capri etc, and advised that they were here to help us - and they really did.
I would recommend this hotel as we had a very comfortable and pleasant stay - looking forward to returning some day.
The Greatest Place
from A TripAdvisor MemberMy wife and I who were married in Ravello (Villa Cimbrone), travled to many other parts of italy for our honeymoon but found Villa Maria and Ravello to be our favorite hotel and location.
Breakfast and charge policy and bathroom facilities.
from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for Sorrento
Getting around We wanted to use Sorrento as a base for visiting Pompeii, Vesuvius, Capri etc...........would recommend going with a tour group........public transport is often crowded. The only road is the coast road and that is very narrow with tight curves and parking is difficult, so would not recommend hiring a car.
Visit Herculanium Lots of the tours just go to Pompei but Herculanium is well worth visiting. Train from Sorrento. Also when you go to Vesuvius try to make the climb to the top takes 30mins up and 10mins down. Views are breathtaking and when you also see the power of the mountain at the two historic sites its awesome and it could occur again any day.
Capri It is nice to say that you have been but it is over rated and expensive. It is very similar to Sorrento. Instead of queing for ages to lie flat in a rowing boat to be pushed into the grotto, instead take a boat trip around the whole island. This way you will see the grotto from behind and still get to see the fabulous blue hues of the water.
