Disappointing Food

Everywhere is very clean, including our room the bedswere comfortable there is a nice pool area and comfortable lounge. There is a fairly well stocked supermarket next door, the road is very busy but it did not disturb me personally. The food was very disappointing and unimaginative,(breakfast was OK)and we never saw a vegetable all week. The restaurant staff worked very hard very friendly and obliging can't say about reception as we had very little to do with them.strangely they do not take cards and anything you buy has to be signed for and is put on your final bill, you don't actually get a bill, the amount you owe is added up using a calculator the total is shown to you,you pay the amount but don't get a receipt or an itemised bill which I thought very odd.We too travelled with Riviera Travel their organisation is superb and our tour was manager excellent

t stay there again...

from ClaphamLondon
From the first moment I knew I should have booked somewhere else. We had booked for four nights and our first night was spent in the hotel across the road as they did not have a room for us. Unfortunatley the hotel they put us in was right on the main road and was so noisy that it was hard to sleep. When I complained they said they would upgrade us to be in the main hotel rather than a "detached" room.

When we moved over the following morning to stay in the Villa Maria they put us back into a detached room even though we were told we were to be upgraded and told the person we had spoken to knew nothing! We then had to ask to be moved as our room was again on the road and extremely noisy. We then had to pay 90 Euros extra for another room away from the traffic, this was the upgraded room that had been promised!

I wouldn't stay there again, the breakfast was not anything to write home about and whilst the reception were quite friendly it was too much of a package holiday hotel for my taste.

unfriendly and dishonest

We found the staff very unfriendly. I made the error of leaving my
valuables at the front desk safe. $260.0 were bstolen.

This is an outstanding hotel located in the heart of Sorrento with easy access to shopping, walking tours, restaurants, Church, guided tours including ferry service to Capri.
The staff is highly trained, pleasant and accommodating. One gets the family feel in this hotel yet you know it's operated by professionals.
A solid value. A completely comfortable and carefree place to stay, time and again.

Loved the location, close to Town Centre.

We have just returned from a short stay at the Villa Maria. Receptionist was very helpful giving us a map of Sorrento and timetable of buses, trains etc. on arrival. We stayed in a triple room sleeping 2 adults and 1 child. Room was fine with a small balcony and a view overlooking other buildings. I liked the breakfast, good selection of cakes, oranges and fruit juice. Cappucchino was excellent! We also had an evening meal which was convenient, but would recommend going into town to eat. The best thing about this hotel is the location, juat a few miutes walk away from the town centre.

Be careful!

They took it upon themselves to charge my credit card without my permission. They obtained it from their other hotel in Positano. Now I am dealing with my credit card company and the fabricated reciepts from the Villa Maria that do not show my signature. Bottom line is that they technically stole my credit card number.

Villa Maria a home from home

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I have stayed at the Villa Mariafor the past 6 years and stayed at the hotel in July of this year.On reading some of the reviews, we feel they do not reflect our experiences of the hotel, and we are not easy to please.
We are always made very welcome by all the staff and nothing is to much trouble for themto make your stay a relaxed and happy one.The breakfasts & evening meals are varied and of good quality for a 3* hotel. The decoration and cleanliness of the hotel is of a very good standard. The bedrooms & bathrooms are also very clean. Our only gripe is the shower cubicle is small but functional.
The pool and bar area is a very pleasant place to top up your tan or enjoy a freshly prepared light lunch. There is also a roof terrace solarium if you want some peace to read or just laze in the sun. A hydromassage pool and sauna (paid locally) are for the more adventurous, it is very good, we do use them.
Only a 10 minute stroll away is the beautiful town of Sorrento. The people are very friendly & hospitable, we have tried to learn Italian and this appreciated. A cafe you must visit is the Cafe Monna Lisa set amidst the cobbled streets off Corsa Italia, it is a must, it's the only place we know where you get a smiley face on your Cappuchino, everything is presented with that little extra touch. Try it for yourself and see what we mean, the staff are very friendly and helpful.
The cafe in the Communial gardens is also a very pretty place to enjoy a coffee, watch the world go by, and a view to die for overlooking the bay of Naples.
Sorrento and the Amalfi coast is a wonderful area to visit with something for everyone. The local transport is good so everywhere is easy to get to. We love the area so much we have already booked to go back in 2005, a week in the hotel Posa Posa in Positano (run by the same family)and a week in the hotel Villa Maria, where we will be greeted like old friends.

Very Comfortable Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We made a late booking for the first week in September in the Villa Maria,Sorrento. We arrived around 10 pm to a very friendly welcome at reception. The restaurant was closed but a meal had been prepared and a table was ready for us, I think it was the owners wife who served us. The meal was very good - better than the usual sandwich we were given in similar situations on previous holidays.
The room was excellent having a bathroom with a large shower (including seat!) with a good flow of water with reliable temperature control. This was very welcome as it was hot and sunny all week and a refreshing shower was needed after each visit to town. The towels provided were the fluffy variety we are used to using in the UK not the "tea-towels" often found in Italian hotels.
The standard of cleanliness in restaurant, corridors and room (cleaned/towels replaced every day while we were at breakfast) was excellent.
The air conditiong was superb.

The buffet breakfast was really good with a good choice of bread, pastries, croissants etc. The fruit juice (orange or pineapple) was poor.
Evening meals were OK if a little boring after a few days. The staff were very friendly and helpful and did not expect you to wait for anything.
The pool area was a little scruffy at times. Some of the loungers are broken and these tended to have the mattrasses on them to hide the damage. We used to swap the mattrasses to a good bed then leave a book /towel on them while we had breakfast. I did see the staff swap the good bed back to a damaged one on a couple of occasions.
Nevertheless the area was good for sunbathing once we got round this problem which we found more amusing than annoying.
Although the hotel is close to the main road we had no problem with noise from traffic as most of the rooms are down a side road.
The walk into the town takes only a few minutes through busy traffic. We recommend the Bouganvilla diner/gelateria for mouth-watering crepes and absolutely excellent coffee. This is very close to the hotel.
Sorrento town is very busy and "touristy" and although we really enjoyed our holiday we will probably return to Amalfi when taking a holiday on the Neapolitan Riveria again.

Loved this hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We really enjoyed our recent stay at this hotel. It is located at the end of town, set back from the main street but it is not too far to walk and the main street is flat.

We had a fifth floor room with a balcony with views over the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. There was a little table and 2 chairs on the balcony to enjoy the view in comfort. The french windows on to the balcony were shuttered. The air conditioning was great. Room was clean and neat with tiled floor and cool white cotton bed linen.

Bathroom had a marble wash hand basin, loo, bidet, hairdryer (which was a little slow to dry!) and a free standing shower cubicle. White italian "Frette" towels were supplied - only the best! The bathroom was great but, often, as there was no ventilation, somewhat steamy! They could really improve on that.

The breakfast was generous, with an impressive banquet table of delights every morning
(melon/cakes/crossiants/bread rolls/scrambled eggs/ham and cheeses/yoghurts etc). (However, we thought the sweetened orange and pineapples juices on offer were unnecessary as the area grows such great fruit!)

The staff were friendly and on our arrival supplied maps and recent transport/ferry timetables to Capri etc, and advised that they were here to help us - and they really did.

I would recommend this hotel as we had a very comfortable and pleasant stay - looking forward to returning some day.

The Greatest Place

from A TripAdvisor Member
I don't know where to begin and I can't say enough nice things about the staff of Villa Maria. The hotel is beautiful it is in a great location with great views of the sea. The rooms are very clean and spacious the beauty of the hotel was only magnified by the great staff who I foud to be very helpful and very poilte being able to assisit me with everything.

My wife and I who were married in Ravello (Villa Cimbrone), travled to many other parts of italy for our honeymoon but found Villa Maria and Ravello to be our favorite hotel and location.

Breakfast and charge policy and bathroom facilities.

from A TripAdvisor Member
Compared to other hotels I've stayed in the breakfast was sub par' I requested some cold milk for my grandchildren and was told they had no cold milk. This was ridiculous since how do you keep milk from spoiling if you don't refrigerate it. We paid 1936 Euros for a four day stay in August for two rooms. While the bathroom was clean the shower was small and hard to move arround in.I had charges for some drinks and snacks which they insisted I pay cash for at check out. Parking was not so good and one of the staff scraped the bumper of my rental car and had the nerve to deny causing the damage which I personally witnessed.

Top Local Tips for Sorrento

Getting around We wanted to use Sorrento as a base for visiting Pompeii, Vesuvius, Capri etc...........would recommend going with a tour group........public transport is often crowded. The only road is the coast road and that is very narrow with tight curves and parking is difficult, so would not recommend hiring a car.

Visit Herculanium Lots of the tours just go to Pompei but Herculanium is well worth visiting. Train from Sorrento. Also when you go to Vesuvius try to make the climb to the top takes 30mins up and 10mins down. Views are breathtaking and when you also see the power of the mountain at the two historic sites its awesome and it could occur again any day.

Capri It is nice to say that you have been but it is over rated and expensive. It is very similar to Sorrento. Instead of queing for ages to lie flat in a rowing boat to be pushed into the grotto, instead take a boat trip around the whole island. This way you will see the grotto from behind and still get to see the fabulous blue hues of the water.
