Great Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have just returned from a week's stay at the Grand Hotel Royal,Sorrento. The room had a fantastic view of the Bay of Naples and of the hotels' lovely gardens, which are full of trees and flowers.
The room was really clean, and the hotel staff friendly and helpful.
The restaurant overlooks the gardens and the food is of good standard.
The hotel has a pool and bar with adjacent terrace which are so peaceful you are tempted to spend your entrire holiday at the hotel relaxing!
The main square of Sorrento is only a short walk away, the town can be busy but the hotel is a perfect retreat if you don't want to sample the vibrant artmosphere of this enchanting location in one of the world's most beautiful places.

Excellent - would not hesitate to use again

from Frostycat
The hotel is in a brilliant position within easy walking distance of the centre of town. From the moment I walked through the door the staff could not do enough for me. They were pleasant, courteous and friendly, from the reception staff, restaurant and bar staff to the night porter and chambermaids. The room was not a sea view room, but looked out onto the road. This worried me slightly as I had read previous reviews warning of traffic noise. However, no problem at all - the patio doors completely masked all noise and the electric shutters (which could be controlled as I lay in bed) masked out any light, and gave extra security. Breakfast was taken in a lovely restaurant overlooking the gardens and the bay. The choice was enormous, both hot and cold food with a chef cooking omelettes to order. The gardens were gorgeous with a full complement of sun loungers and the pool area was beautiful, again overlooking the bay.
The only reason I have given this hotel 4 stars and not 5 is because no ironing boards were available, not even to borrow. However, I would definitely stay here again because of the pleasant helpful staff and the unrivalled position, giving the best of both worlds, ie proximity to the town and stunning views across the Bay of Naples.

One of the nicest hotels in Sorrento

from Giovanna
I stayed at the Grand Royal last summer for 10 days and loved every minute of it. The hotel is beautiful. As a single person I was upgraded to a double room which was tastefully done with gorgeous inlayed furniture. My bed and especially my pillow were the most comfortable. The hotel was immuculate and the hotel staff were extremely friendly and most helpful to me. The pool was beautiful and spacious. The views to say the least, were breathtaking. The food was excellent and the location couldnt be beat. I would highly recommend this hotel.

excellent

My cousin, myself and my 84 year old engergetic mother stayed here
last September and had an excellent 5 night holiday. We wanted a hotel close to the town with sea view and balcony (my mother wanted to sip champange on the balcony looking out to sea, she had her wish).
We had a very large bedroom ample room for 3. It's worth every penny to have the view. I couldn't complain about anything. We had a fantastic time the staff were extremely helpful we would definately go to Sorrento and this hotel again.

Staying here almost ruined our holiday

If you do not like cheap feeling package holidays - do not be tempted to stay at The Royal - I feel that you will be severely disappointed.

Dont get me wrong, the location and the view is absolutely stunning - however, so are many other hotels in Sorrento.

We spent part of our Amalfi Coast holiday in the Royal and it was awful (very 'carry on campers', lorry loads of Coach tourists, bland - slightly tarnished rooms, rude management staff and you had better pack your nylon clothes as no ironing facilities - you have to pay and it takes 24 hours to get your clothes back!!

For an additional £20 per night you could stay at the Excelsior - an exquisite hotel with wonderfully friendly staff - a better location and equally wonderful view. Definately the best hotel I have ever stayed in and will never forget!

The view at the Royal is great but the same as other hotels and is no way near enough to make make staying there bearable

Truly Remarkable

Great hotel! We booked the Royal based on reviews on Trip-Advisor.com and were not at all disappointed! Great Service from all the hotel staff, great food, great room with sea view, perched on the cliffs above the Mediterranean Sea, helped make our 8-night stay at the Royal one to remember. We were there from Oct. 18-26, 2004. In the dining room, Alberto, Mario and Antonino will take very good care of you, and Salvatore and Luigi at the front desk are always courteous and helpful. The place is impeccably maintained inside and out, and the view across the bay of Naples with Mt. Vesuvius framing the far coast is spectacular! We'll be back!

An excellent hotel in Sorrento

from Reading tourist
The hotel was superb, with clean rooms, excellent facilities, excellent service and a view to die for. We had a sea view, with a balcony, and enjoyed the views of the port and the cruise liners as well as of the Bay of Naples. The breakfast was excellent, with fresh fruit particularly welcome. We did not eat dinner at the hotel, because the dinner menus were unimaginative, but the hotel is only a stroll from the town and, for excursions, really close to the port and the station. We will be back!

Everything we expected

from A TripAdvisor Member
When we had lunch on our arrival on the Terrace by the pool overlooking Naples Bay, Versuvius and the marina, surrounded by lemon and grapfruit trees and exotic plants and flowers I thought that I had died and gone to heaven. I booked based on Trip Advisor Reviews and decided as it was our 25th Anniversary we should push the boat out. We had a lovely comfortable spotless room with a large veranda overlooking Naples Bay. To wake up in the morning and open the electric shutters and to be greeted by the view (included an American Cruise ship moored just outside the marina) made the trip. The Breakfast Buffet catered for all tastes and we sat outside overlooking the lovely gardens. We had one evening meal in the Royal and if we had been on half board I couldn't have managed the 4 courses every evening. Although the restaurant was full the service was excellent. There was a very good band on two nights. Part of the experience was the view and I wouldn't have wanted a room at the front by the road although we were given one to shower and change in after we checked out as we had a late flight and we couldn't hear any road noise through the patio windows.
It was a perfect spot as just a short walk to Sorrento's centre which wasn't as noisy and busy as I expected and anyway is pedestrian only after 7pm. Most of the sides streets cannot take vehicles so it was very pleasant shopping.
As we booked independently I arranged for 'Sorrento Limo' to for our airport transfer. Our Driver recommended the restaurant 'Villa Rubicanna' next to the Hotel Eden (in the same road as the Royal) It had pages of food and the house wine was only 6 euros, and an enormous pizza was only 5 euros and it was full of the locals. I would also like to recommend 'Sorrento Limo' as both our drivers were excellent and gave us a guided tour, history lessons and plenty of advice for our visit just to & from the airport! The local railway is a very cheap way to travel.
Best place for a cuppachino is Bar Fauno in the square where you can people watch and try to understand Italian driving rules. Your coffee comes with little cakes and your beer with nibbles and also it has the most impressive spotless loos in Sorrento.
As for the Royal we plan to return. Any faults? If I was being really picky a couple of extra towels would have been nice, but I'm sure that they would have been provided if we had asked. And as it was our Silver Anniversary, some recognition of this would have been nice. And the rooms are pricy but you get what you pay for.
Sorrento is a brilliant place for sight-seeing and shopping but don't expect beaches or a hectic nightlife. We plan to go back.

Beware of Excessive Traffic Noise

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our two week 'A la Carte' holiday package in September 2004 proved poor value.

While the standard room was clean and well appointed, it could not have been much smaller. Worst of all was the excessive traffic noise from the road below. The twice weekly collection of empty bottles from the kitchen area at around 4 am was also most unwelcome.

The message is simple - if you are going to stay at this hotel, make sure you reserve a sea view room, whatever the supplement!

Superb holiday

Just spent 1 week with my husband, son and daughter in law at the Royal. Hotel staff couldn't have been more helpful. Room lovely, food superb, surroundings most relaxing. Must go again!!
