Never could keep a secret!

Really would like to keep this hotel secret but felt the staff deserved praise for making our holiday in June such a perfect 10 days.

The hotel as already mentioned in previous reviews is definately one for those who don't mind a little exercise. The bus into the town however, was always dependable so getting around was not a problem.

The view was to die for.... even after a week, my jaw still dropped open when I looked out over the bay from my dinner table. The photos and video still haven't done it justice!

We particularly found the restaurant staff 1st class and they were extremely courteous.

For those with children, do not feel that this is an ideal location. The hotel is quite isolated and fairly quiet. The one or two we did see, looked a little bored.

Can't wait to return!

The view says it all

The views from the restaurant, roof top solarium & pool area just magnificent. Pay extra for a sea view - it is well worth it. We've just had 3 nights at the hotel after a hectic tour of Florence & Rome & it wasn't enough. A great place just to chill. The spa on the roof top was lovely. We had it all to ourselves on our first night there at about 6pm.
Ok the hotel is a bit far out but the courtesy bus was fine. We found the service v good. Food was ok, especially if you liked fish. Would definately go back.

Most Fabulous Holiday

I stayed at the hotel President for one week at the end of June 2004 and I had one of my greatest holidays.
It has absolutely stunning eye watering views over Sorrento. The staff were absolutely wonderful, in particular the restaurant staff and the headwaiter that made everyone feel very special. The food was great. The reception staff was also very helpful, there was one reception member, who we encountered once on our last day who was a little rude and abrupt and very unlike the other staff we met. This member of reception we never encountered during the holiday. I would agree that the hotel is far from the town, but it is its location, which allows this hotel to have such fabulous views. The hotel does have a bus running in the morning and evening into and from Sorrento, it would have been nicer if they were more frequent, but having said that the bus was always on time and the driver was always very pleasant and happy. I would love to return there some day.

Nice hotel but access to town difficult

I would agree with many of the views other visitors have made. I went to the hotel in June 2004.

On the positive, the hotel is very clean with big rooms, friendly staff and beautiful views over Sorrento.

However we found the hotel isolated from town and difficult to access. We were told of a path that we would bring us down in 20 minutes however it was closed for roadworks and very steep. The hotel runs a bus to town but only until 11am, then at 5pm, 9pm and 9.30pm, the last bus leaves to return to the hotel from town at 11.15pm. Walking on the main road is not an option if you value your life! Taxis are 10 euro during the day and 12 in the evening but only until midnight (for return from town) and through the hotel contact. Therefore we had to be very organised, there was no popping out to the shop or into town at a whim. I would also not recommend this hotel if you like to sleep, I could clearly hear next door snoring and the tiled floor though beautiful is very noisy as you can hear everyone walking above and outside your room.
Dinner is 7-9pm, but by 9.30pm they are closing up and it was made obvious that they wanted us to go, so if you wish to dine late it is not a good choice.

Although the hotel is very nice I would recommend a hotel nearer town where you have the views but more flexibility for access to Sorrento.

Tip: if you are on a package holiday, don't go on organised trips, public transport is much much cheaper and easy to use.

Nice hotel but the staff can be rude~

Overall the hotel was OK. Room was clean. Breakfast could have been better. The waiters were very good. The reception staff were some of the rudest we've ever encountered. We were actually asked if we were guests of the hotel after returning from a day of sightseeing. When checking out, they did not believe that we only took two drinks from the mini bar -- they called the cleaning staff to confirm! I wouldn't stay here again because of the poor staff and the hotel's location. If you're looking for a place to stay put for a week, the hotel is fine. If you're looking for a place to base yourself to sightsee the coast, the hotel is too far from the main streets.

Absolute Bliss

We are just home from an absolute blissful week at the Hotel President. It had everything.... The most amazing views (definitely recommend the supplement for sea view rooms) overlooking the breathtaking Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius; a brilliant swimming pool and hydropool; a sunroof solarium with another jacuzzi; a health spa.... the list is endless. The fabulous food in the restaurant combined with the friendly staff, that cannot do enough for you, is incredible. Some reviews have said that its location high in the hills is a disadvantage but i totally disagree, it's fantastic being just slightly away from the very noisy town of Sorrento and the hotel runs a courtesy shuttle bus about 9 or 10 times a day. It was the absolute perfect holiday (relaxing and romantic!) thanks to the hotel's location, staff, food and facilities and I'm already trying to book to go back!!!
Ps... I wouldn't recommend a sorrento holiday for children or teenagers as the few families we meet found it difficult to entertain them. It's definitely a destination for adults.

my husband and I spent a week(22-30 may 04) at Sorrento in the president hotel. It was splendid in every way!!!! If you want a very quiet hotel with a wonderfull view, very clean, good meals, beautiful rooms and very friendly don't hesitate. Perhaps not so quiet and too hot in july and august

Amazing views but long way from town

The lofty position of this hotel, set behind the town, is both its strength and its weakness. Before choosing it, decide on your priorities. If you aim to spend a lot of time at the hotel - sunbathing etc, and mostly dining in the hotel itself, it's a good choice. If you like a stroll from your hotel to nearby shops and restaurants, think twice. The town can be reached down a little lane (very pretty, through lemon and olive groves) in about 20 mins, but it's a steep walk back. The hotel runs a courtesy bus, but during our stay in May 2004, no bus left the hotel after 5pm until 9pm, so not much good for dining out! Our room at the president was large, recently attractively refurbished, and with a large balcony with the most amazing views. Walls are a bit thin, and marble floors noisy.On arrival at 3pm, hotel claimed they could not serve a room service meal, and we needed to be strong before they relented. Pool area and garden compact, but enough space and great view. Buffet breakfast includes bacon, eggs, sausages as well as extensive cold choices. Watery, synthetic tasting fruit juices a disappointment. Evening meal good but bland, service friendly and efficient. Good choice of dining in Sorrento itself.The hotel is used extensively by British and German tour operators, who organize excursions with collection at the hotel.

The sea view from the 'president' over the bay of naples may well be the most spectacular you will ever see - and will definitely stay in your mind's eye for a very very long time. the twinkling lights of the town, the bay, the brooding mountains and mount versuvius smouldering in the background! Incredible

the room (and double bed) was of a good size, marbled flooring a nice touch ...

staff were generally good and attentive .....restaurant was fine but not 5* (food was a bit aggregated at times) pool service and view from pool was vg

all in all ....a great hotel, but the location and THE VIEW are the 'killers' which makes this 'the must stay' place for the discerning traveller in sorrento

The Grand president has an amazing position up in the hills, with a glamourous outlook over the beautiful town of Sorrento. The pool, rooms and staff were all fab and the coastline along amalfi is straight out of a 60's movie. We likey!!

public rransport avoid organised trips and taxis..very expensive. train to pompeii 5 euros organised trip 31 euros plus entrance.bus to positano 3.6 euros trip 28 euros

Arrival/departure arrangements to and Naples Airport Ensure your travel representative explains fully your travel arrangements from and to the Airport -we were alarmed at being deposited in a bus terminal in Sorrento after being dropped off by the bus bringing us back from the Airport - this bus was too large to negotiate the road into the hotel and we eventually were transferred to a smaller bus/taxi. The return journey was of a similar nature.
