Superb location, service, staff and food

Wonderful week at a wonderful hotel. Everything was great .... only the pool could be better (but we did not go to that charming area to waste time at a pool). Located close to the centre of Sorrento, everything was within walking distance. The food and service was excellent. I will definitely return.

Lovely Hotel

We spent 2 weeks at this hotel which was booked through Thomas Cook. I would recommend this hotel to all my friends - it was wonderful. The staff were very helpful and friendly. There was a good selection on the menu each day and the waiters were great. Although we had a balcony there wasn't much of a view as we were looking into the courtyard. The pool is quite small and has a small terrace which is in the shade during the morning. However there is a roof sun terrace. Some people did mention the train noise if you were at the back of the hotel - but we didn't experience this. The hotel is very convenient for the centre of Sorrento. I would definately recommend making your own way to Pompeii and Herculaneum - both are only a few euros return and the service was really reliable. We also made our own arrangements to go over to Capri (hydofoil) and Possitano (local bus service) both of which were no problem and much more fun than a organised trip and a fraction of the cost !!

Lovely Hotel

Just returned from 2 weeks in Italy having stayed at the Michelangelo Hotel.
The hotel is lovely, very clean and the pictures in the brochures dont really do the hotel justice.
All staff were wonderful and very helpful, and the food was of good standard. The bar situated in the hotel is lovely and the 2 barmen were brilliant.
The hotel is situated on the main street from the main square, about a five minute walk. The hotel is also right by the railway station but although we were at the back of the hotel next to the railway line the noise was minimal.
If you are going to go and see pompei we would recommend to go by train, really cheap at 3 euros return and it stops right outside pompei. You can pay a guide there or get earphones (if getting earphones you need to take your passports).
The food in sorrento is lovely plently of pasta, pizza and fish dishes at reasonable prices.
Whilst we were there our friends got married in piano de sorrento which was lovely outside under a tree with lovely views of the coast.
We would highly recommend sorrento and highly recommend the Michelangelo Hotel.

Very disappointed in Michelangelo Hotel. I booked 6 months in advance in March for a 4 night stay in September. But 2 weeks before I was due to go to Sorrento I get an email that the Michelangelo would not honour the booking and were transferring me to another hotel. The other hotel was in Sant Agnello, not Sorrento. Which is 20-25 minutes walk away from Sorrento.

I am sure a lot users of this site, like myself, spend time researching possible hotels to stay in, trying to ensure they don't make a bad choice. But with the Michelangelo this counts for nothing as it seems a lottery whether they will honour their reservation. Who knows why my reservation was OK for five and a half months, then they suddenly discovered they could not take me.

Dispite taking time and care in my hotel choice, it was the Michelangelo Hotel who decided where I would stay.

Perfect hotel

I have just stayed at the hotel for 3 nights during a round trip in Italy. It is a very nice hotel with a very central location in Sorrento. Right on the mainstreet and only 2 min. walk from the railway station. We could actually see the station from our balcony. We stayed on the 6'th floor right out the the railway but the noice from the trains where not a problem.
The room was nice and food was also splended. The pool was not very big and it closed at 7 pm.
We came by car but the hotels parking area was full, so they recommended a parkinglot 5 min. drive away for 10 euro pr. night. Very fine parking.
All in all a very recommendable hotel that I would diffently stay in again if I visit Sorrento.

just back from sorrento. stayed for 1 week in this fabulous hotel. lovely rooms, spacious bathrooms, friendly and helpful staff and fantastic food. central location but very quiet at night.

Top Class Hotel

I stayed at the Michelangelo during August 2005. We booked our weeks stay through Portland Holidays. The hotel is in an excellent central location close to the shopping area and railway station. The hotel was spotless and tastefully decorated. Our room was well appointed with a balcony. The only drawback of the hotel is the lack of a 'view' from the balcony due to the central location. However we were not in the room too long to worry about that. The area around Sorrento has a wealth of fantastic places to visit such as Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri, Amalfi and Ischia. The hotel staff were outstanding and paticularly helpful with my three year old daughter during meal times. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who prefers a central location and faultless accomodation and service.

We arrived home from Sorrento, htl Michelangelo on 01st Aug after a 7 nights stay. The location is magnificent, and in our opinion the only drawback at the hotel is that some of the rooms are facing the railway - however the train traffic stops by midnight and does not start again until 6 am. The trains are not that frequent though, 15-30 min apart and though we had a room to this side, we were not disturbed by the trains. The sun deck on 5th floor is great with showers, and the small swimming pool on the 2nd floor s great too - however the water in the pool was very cold!

Clean, spacious rooms, friendly service and a delicious breakfast - I can certainly recommend this hotel to everyone!

A truly great place to stay in Sorrento

Just returned from 11 nights at the Michaelangelo and thought it was only fair to let others know what a fantastic hotel this is in many different ways. For one the pictures you see in various brochures do not do this hotel justice, it is smart, clean, modern & very impressive. The pool as suggested maybe considered small, however i thought it was more than adequate, although early morning it is in the shade from around 11am you will always be in the sun. The food was great, a varied choice & it was always of great quality in both taste & presentation. Now for the important aspect of the Michaelangelo, the staff. I have been on many holidays throughout the world but the staff here are the best by a mile, never have we felt so welcomed. Special thanks to Giuseppe the bar man, awesome cocktails & a real comedian. Waiters Pepe & Luigi who treated our little boy so well & couldnt have been more helpfull. If you are visting Sorrento this is the place to stay.

Great Holiday

Just returned from a weeks vacation at this beautiful hotel. As a family of 4 with 2 teenage children, I would recommend this hotel. It is ideally located, the staff are fantastic (especially Guiseppi the bar man). We arrived very late and had missed dinner but the hotel had left a delicious cold buffet in our rooms. We ate this and then went next door to the best pizza place in town. If you are going for a holiday by the pool then look elsewhere the pool is tiny but there is a very quiet sun lounge on the 5th floor which had a panoramic viem of the area.

We stayed at the Michelangelo Hotel last week and it fitted the bill perfectly with clean and modern rooms, friendly staff, good food and a convenient location just 5 minutes walk from the centre of Sorrento.

The restaurant service was somewhat swift which depending on your outlook could be a good or bad thing! If you’re on half board you can choose to have lunch or a packed lunch instead of dinner which is handy if you’re heading out for dinner. Some people have commented that the roof top terrace / pool areas are on the small side but we found them perfectly acceptable and given the choice I'd choose the central location of Michelangelo over a hotel with more space further out of Sorrento town.

The find of the holiday was a restaurant recommended to us by the hotel barman - Restaurant Angelina Lauro on Piazza Angelina Lauro, just two minutes walk from the hotel serving fabulous food to locals and tourists alike. Raffaele the co-owner is expert in recommending the best local dishes such as Octopus in a rich tomato sauce, great fillet steak, spaghetti with clams and to drink pears in white wine. Go there – it’s a fabulously unpretentious locals restaurant and good value too. Tell Raffaele the Irish girl who fell of the chair sent you!

We took ferries to Capri and to Amalfi / Positano both of which were well worth doing and reasonably priced, especially the ferry to Amalfi (Tickets available from the tourist office).

Top Local Tips for Sorrento

Timing is Everything! Stay away from Sorrento in the summer; it's very hot and crowded. Also, probably best time to go woluld be in the spring, after Easter, since the weather should be pleasant, the trees and flowers will be blooming, and there won't so many children on school trips and on spring break! Lots of traffic all the time, but much worse in the summer months! I'd imagine that the early fall would be lovely as well.

The Train Having been to Sorrento on a number of occasions I have booked tours to Pompeii through my tour operator at quite an expensive price (E70 per person) and only saw the first quater of it, no ampitheatre etc.. On this trip we decided to take the train to Pompeii and Herculanium on the same day (E5 per person return!) and then only E11 entry and got to see the whole sight. If you are confident enough to take the train (and to give a firm NO to persistant beggars) then do so!

Use Public Transportation The public transportation system is economical and on time. Trains, boats and buses. Sorrento is very convenient for using as a base for visiting sites on the Amalfi Coast.
