a great surprise!
from 3357
We arrived in the Sorrento area after 5 days in Rome, without reservations. We had info on the Mami Camilla as an inexpensive B&B that we found on the web- we drove round and round, and after getting directions at the train station in Sorrento, finally found it, and it was well worth the trouble. We planned to stay for a night or two and then drive on, but found ourselves extending our stay until after 7 nights, it was time to head back to Rome.
The accomodations were simple but comfortable, a clean room with a double bed and a bathroom, no TV or other amenities. it was cold with a tile floor underfoot, especially since the weather was rainy and chilly, but there were a pile of warm bedcovers under which to relax and read. I would recommend asking for a room in the back of the property, as there was a lot of traffic noise in the front of the main building.
After the first night wandering around town and finding a so-so restaurant, we ate in the dining room at Mami Camilla every night- had wonderful 4 course meals made by the chef, Biagio, and the cooking school students and great conversations with fellow travelers from all over- Germany, Great Britain, France, Japan, US, etc.
Breakfast was a great start for the day- juice, homemade breads, fruit, and the best capuccino and espresso we had in Italy.
It was a great home base for exploring the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Naples and Salerno. We had a rental car that we picked up leaving Rome, but even without one, the buses and trains make it easy to get around the area.
A great family run bed and breakfast with a casual, laid back atmosphere- we can't wait to go back.

Buongiorno, Mami Camilla!

The Hotel Mami Camilla is an excellent place to stay, with friendly English-speaking staff who look after your needs attentively. It is located about a mile from Sorrento, but transport is easy thanks to the regular bus (if you can't face the walk). The hotel is set in beautiful gardens and lemon groves, and has a spacious feel with the rooms being set in smaller buildings dotted around the grounds - it is certainly not like your average hotel where the rooms are all on top of each other! The hotel offers culinary courses and the food is fantastic and very fresh. All in all, a great place to stay, eat and relax.
(PS. We had trouble finding the hotel, so on that note: Look for the Tabac on Via Cocumella, directly opposite is a gravel driveway leading up past a car park on the left. About 20 metres up on the right is a white gate. Press the light switch to activate the bell!)

Best food in Italy!

My husband and I stayed at Mami Camilla as the last leg of a two week honeymoon in Italy. We too missed their sign, but found it quickly after asking a taxi driver. We were greeted by a member of the family who checked us in and Biagio let us sample some of his wonderful pastries.
The room and bathroom were among the largest we encountered in Europe, although when we arrived it was colder inside the room than it was outside. We only participated in the family meal the last day we were there, and I wish we would've eaten there everyday. It was probably the best meal we had while in Italy!
I may sound picky, but a couple drawbacks were that the room was VERY cold the first day we were there. They did have an individual room heater which we weren't shown how to use. It was above the bathroom near the ceiling and operated by a remote control. Also, it would have been nice if the family would've introduced themselves when we arrived as we did encounter them throughout our stay! All in all, it was probably one of the best places we stayed while in Europe.

Three wonderful nights
from Aeolus
We spent three nights at Mami Camilla, and had three wonderful dinners. What a fabulous find. Family style dinners with the other guests and the students and interns from the cooking school was so much fun and the food was great in the way that only the freshest food, simply and lovingly prepared, can be. We also got to share in the family's excitement when Juvenos beat the hated galacticos of Real Madrid. This is a unique place, and one we are lucky to have found througth tripadvisor.com.
A word of caution. Mami Camilla is up the long driveway across from the News stand, to the right of a large gravel parking area. We arrived at night, and had difficulty locating this until we asked for directions.

The week that flew by!
from Donnaonthego
As frequent visitors to Italy, we were a little nervous to spend 7 days Dec. 28 to Jan. 3) in one location (without TV or phone), but were we ever wrong to have any doubts that the week spent at Mami Camilla's with the terrific Longo family was an experience to always remember. we participated in a culinary program (cooked 3 meals with Biagio -we loved him!) and spent time with local artisans (cheese Producer, olive oil maker-third generation, as well as a fun half day with a wonderful Sorrentine farmer and his wife at their farm followed by lunch in their country kitchen!) All were arranged and hosted by Guiseppe who was a terrific host.
As an added bonus, there were actually 3 culinary students doing their externship (2 months) with Biagio, so we all cooked togther!
The Longo family hosted a New Year's Eve party that epitomized their hospitality!
We will defintely return again, as we made many friends with the locals who welcomed us in true Southern Italian fashion!
We have done 3 other cooking programs in Italy in the past 2 years, but none as memorable & touching as this!

Comfortable, clean, reasonably priced and most important of all an extremely friendly atmosphere - a home away from home! My friends and I were there over the Christmas break and had an absolutely wonderful time. Mami Camilla is conveniently located for trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Amalfi coast and Capri. Dinners at Mami Camilla are an experience in food tasting and socialising with fellow guests from all over.
A Great Expericence

We arrived at Mami Camille's late at night without a reservation. Agostino very graciously offered to put us up for the night. We ended up staying 5 nights. We enjoyed the morning breakfasts and the evening 4 course meals. Meeting people from all over the globe was an added plus. Wonderful food, gracious hospitality, economically priced, and clean room - We look forward to returning. The only negative - It's hard to find. They need a larger sign!
Amazing Experience!!!

I recently returned from a fabulous stay at Mami Camilla! The Longo family welcomed us into their world with remarkable hospitality. I was fortunate enough to take a cooking class from Biagio. With his help, the pupils created a divine four-course meal (we all received a copy of his cookbook and an apron). The accomodations are immaculate and peaceful. I cannot wait to go back. We met so many wonderful people (several of whom were on their honeymoon)!!! Contrary to one review, Giuseppe was such a pleasure! His brother Agostino was warm and kind as well. I highly recommend a visit to Sorrento just to stay at Mami Camilla. Friends and family were truly impressed when I returned with many Italian culinary secrets up my sleeve! Thank you Longo family for an amazing experience!
We felt like part of the family
from A TripAdvisor Member
We just returned from a trip to Italy and spent four nights at Mami Camilla. It was a delightful change from a boring hotel. Our room in the garden had the necessities and we enjoyed the rooster crowing and hearing the other farm animals. The best part was the companionship of all the visitors, especially at dinner. Everyone had a tale to tell about their trip that day, which helped us to plan our next day. There were people from many different countries but we all felt like a big family around the long table enjoying a wonderful dinner. Our hosts were friendly and helpful whenever we had a request or a need for information. Once we located it, it felt like home.
Perfect setting

We have just returned from a week in Italy, four nights of which were spent at Mami Camillas. The 1st night we were put in an enormous local apartment, but when we mentioned to Guiseppe that we would like to be onsite, he immediately switched us to a room in the grounds, set in the lemon and olive groves as described on their website. It was perfect. The dinners were great, as was the the service and company. Nothing was too much trouble for the family. We met people from several different countries and no-one hurried us when we all stayed long after dinner had finished, chatting and drinking the local wine provided. A short 15 minute walk to Sorrento or there are buses, it was a convenient spot. A bigger sign at the entrance would have been helpful though.
The big dogs looked scary, but they were really very gentle and although the rooster did crow, surely this was expected from it and after the good food and wine we slept right through it. We are hoping to return next year.

Top Local Tips for Sorrento
local trains use the trains to get to Pompeii, Herculanuen & Naples. Very cheap, frequent and a lot less hassle than driving
Stay here as a good alternative to Almalfi You can stay here and catch a mind blowing, fairly short bus ride to explore the Amalfi coast. Watch out on the train on the way down from Naples. Pic Pockets are horrible!
