It's hard to say what we enjoyed most – the incredible views of the sea from our window, the lovely gardens, the fantastic food – or because we had all this and were treated so wonderfully by its staff. If we are lucky enough to “Torna a Sorrento,” this is where we would stay again.

Be careful when booking the Imperial !

Be very wary when you book the Imperial Hotel in Sorrento. On the whole, I found hotels in Italy to be very basic (Rome, Florence) so I booked 3 nights in the Imperial because I read the other reviews, saw the price, and assumed it would be a luxurious way to end our holiday. Not so.

When I got to the hotel, I discovered this is what I was paying over 1100 euro for:

1) Two double beds pushed together, and two blankets also. They didn't even bother to put a double blanket on it.

2) An extremely noisy room at the front of the hotel because of the relentless stream of mopeds flying past the hotel. This was due in part to the bad window frames.

3) Sub-standard food. The breakfast (included in the price) consisted ofpoor-quality ham and cheese, and diluted orange squash! The evening meal consisted of pork chops (for 45 euro per head!!) Needless to say we ate elsewhere.

4) The bath/shower had no curtain/screen, so our bathroom was soaked with water whenever one of us wanted to take a shower.

After complaining to three different people about the bes situation we were moved to another room at the back of the hotel which had a (very small) balcony. This made up for it in a small way. At least it wasn't noisy.

All in all, the Imperial is very bad value for money. If you go there expecting luxury, you'll be disappointed. And considering the price, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

(On the plus side, the pool area is nice, the hotel is clean and the staff are relatively helpful)

Absolute Euphoria!!

From the minute we checked in the to the minute we left, we experienced nothing but first class accomadations. I have been all around the world and I have to say that this hotel has one of the best views ever. The hotel is situated directly on the cliff so having meals at their excellent restaurant was magical. This hotel is part of the Leading Hotels Of The World so you recieve the service you come to expect. It was expensive( approx $300 a night) but well worth every penny. My room overlooked the pool and had a huge balcony, my parents room over looked the sea but had a smaller balcony. I recommend this hotel to anyone.

Brilliant location, excellent service

We spent 3 nights on a girls weekend. The staff were very happy and helpful with a good sense of humour. Recommend a seaview room on he 4th floor - large balcony with beautiful views over the Bay of Naples. Lovely bar with terrace - perfect for enjoying a drink while the sun sets.
Well located - 5 mins to shops and restaurants and harbour.
Very easy to take the train to Pompeii -3 euros return ticket and ferry to Positano - 5 euros single.
Conciege has all the details if you ask.

Wonderful Stay at the Tramontano

My husband and I just returned from a two week trip to Italy, and stayed 3 days at the Hotel Imperial Tramontano. The hotel is perched right on the cliff, with spectacular views. The hotel staff was very friendly and courteous and upon arrival we were checked in very quickly. The staff spoke English, so there is no need to be concerned that they won't understand your "tourist" Italian. The hotel grounds are very nice and the lobby is very nicely furnished. They have a little bar with an outside terrace so you can enjoy cocktails in the afternoon while you overlook the water, mountains and boats below. The breakfast in the morning is served in their restaurant located in the lobby, which is surrounded by windows, so it is very bright and airy. The breakfast was served as a buffet and was very well sorted from various types of breads to ham to eggs cooked upon request. The breakfast staff/waiters provide excellent service. Our room was on the first floor and had a huge bathroom, living room and separate bedroom. We had our own terrace which we thoroughly enjoyed. I'm sure their regular rooms are much smaller, but probaly just as nicely furnished and kept. Our room was very clean.
The Tramontano is definitely worth the trip just for the views alone. If we ever return to Sorrento, we will definitely stay at the Tramontano.

Very disappointed

This hotel was a big disappointment. We paid£3000 for two weeks to include a balcony -it was so small only one of us could perch on it at a time. just room for your feet,
Food in restaurant seriously awful-like school dinners-seved with the same flair. We ate out most nights even though we were half board. Rumour had it that an A la Carte menu existed but we saw no evidence of it. One evening one of the main courses was sausages!! the next evening hamburger! .Breakfast orange was dilute squash-which they freely admitted. Hot breakfast included bulldog hot dogs(small balls of frankfurter) and the ham and cheese was the cheapest you could buy. Afternoon tea could only be obtained at 5.15 by going to the bar and collecting it yourself. Ice delivered to your room was 8 Euro. After complaining that our room in no way resembled the'typical'room in the brochure we were changed for our second week to a seriously shabby room but with balcony so we didn't complain. This room had a leaking toilet but we just put up with it.
Also they don't take credit cards from'package' guests but will accept them from internet bookings.
Not permitted to switch 'half board' to lunch at the pool!!!!just not very obliging.
We had advised the hotel that this was our silver wedding--their indifference was overwhelming. Would 'return to Sorrento' but bed only at the tramontano !!!!!!

room with balcony not worth the money

We stayed here for 2 nights back in April and although the staff were friendly, the position right in the middle of town great, the views lovely - I have to say that I was very disappointed by our room and the restaurant food.

We paid a lot of money to have a room overlooking the sea with a balcony but I think other rooms without balconies were probably better. Our room smelt damp and musty and obviously hadn't been modernised for a long time! It had a very strange arrangement as if the balcony had been built on after the hotel was finished, forming another long and thin room adjacent to the bedroom. Not cosy at all! Our room was also underneath the restaurant and so throughout mealtimes there was much scraping on the floor above from chairs and peoples feet!

The pool area and the gardens were pretty, but I would suspect that you could get better value for money elsewhere (or at least don't bother paying the extra for the balcony - it's not worth it!!!).

I stayed in the Tramontano during June 2002. My room was amazing - huge bathroom, separate bedroom and lounge room. The bedroom had a very large window with great views and the lounge room had a lovely balcony with chairs and a table in which I could sit and sip my wine whilst I watched the sun set over the Gulf of Naples and Mt Vesuvius. The hotel itself is fantastic with great facilities and a lovely pool area. Could do with a paint job on the outside but don't let that put you off. The Hotel is very close to the city centre of Sorrento and also a short walk to the port where you can catch boats to Capri, Amafi, Positano and other surrounding towns. It is also a short walk to the small fishing villiage nearby where you can dine overlooking the Bay. A visit to the Amalfi Coast would not be complete without a trip to Ravello. It is very romantic, beautiful and the food and wine is amazing. This is a must! I loved the Amalfi Coast so much I am going back in June this year and am also looking to buy a property there - the food, the wine, the people, the atmoshphere - it is just that good!!!!

My Husband and I stayed at the Tramotano for part of our Honeymoon in 1990. It ws good to see that all these years later it is still living up to the wonderful memories I have of it. Standing on the Terrace overlooking the Bay of Naples sipping gently on a gin and tonic or having a glass of Lemon Liqueur (the local tipple) ah such wonderful memories. Beautiful ambience, wonderful food and delightful weather what more could you ask for except a return visit.We have vowed to return one day and I know we will.......To all those heading out there soon one word ENJOY

Top Local Tips for Sorrento

TRANSPORTATION T SORRENTO FROM NAPLES IF YOU ARE OLDER OR HAVE ANY PROBLEMS GETTING AROUND, ORDER TRANSPORTATION THROUGH THE HOTEL OR TAKE A BOAT IN FROM NAPLES. IF YOU ARE YOUNGER OR HAVE NO PROBLEMS GETTING AROUND YOU COULD TAKE THE LOCAL TRAIN FROM NAPLES TO SORRENTO.

Italian Roads If hiring a car from Naples airport be aware that the Italian drivers have no regard for other road users. It can be quite scary driving on their roads.

Vacation dates Go in May/late september or early October, especially if you plan to visit Pompeii and Herculanium. High season in July and August is very packed. Also April and later in October can be quite wet.
