It's easy to see why guests have been coming to this hotel for nearly two centuries. It's elegant and romantic, with a storybook garden, pool, and a terrace that puts you right on the edge of Pardise. An unforgettable holiday.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria

Christmas 2004

from UkDunns
Having stayed in our favourite Sorrento hotel several times during 2004, for a Christmas treat we decided to stay at the Excel Vitt. What a Christmas, absolutely marvellous. It has now made our other hotel seem rather ordinary, but for the summer it is nice and quietly positioned in St Agnello. At Christmas, it is better to be centrally positioned right on the square.

We have already booked for December 2005 at the Hotel Ex Vitt, and are counting the days, despite the fact that we are returning to our other "Summer" hotel in three weeks time.

The food at the Hotel Ex Vitt was absolutely mouth-watering. I am also a vegetarian but found extremely pleasant food on the menu, without having the chef make me special dishes.

During our May stay in St Agnello, we treated ourselves to lunch at the ExVitt, and are looking forward to doing the same in a few weeks time.

Yes, the hotel had an old-fashioned ambience about it, but we found the staff so friendly and helpful, and as I have said, the food worth going for, just in its own right.

With regard another trip-advisor's comment about the other guests at the hotel, unfortunately you cannot choose who else is willing to pay to stay there. At Christmas, one of the few other english guests there, appeared to think every other word of her english language began with "f"and did not seem happy unless she had a "fag" hanging out of her mouth. We were very pleased when the waiter politely pointed out to her that the restaurant was non-smoking, and she had to stand on the terrace (in December) if she wanted a cigarette. Between each course, she went off onto the terrace for her "fag". We were extremely glad we did not have to suffer the smoke wafting over our lovely food at our meals.

Undeserved Criticism for this Fine Hotel

from Floridasummers
My wife and I were concerned about staying at this Hotel after reading the bad reviews posted here, but what a lovely place it was! We stayed at several hotels in our tour of Italy, but none was as spectacular as this hotel. This is, as noted, an older hotel, but the view, the service, the food, the ambiance, all were excellent. Our next visit to Italy will absolutely include a return visit to this Hotel. And yes, splurge for the view. It is well worth it!

The best hotel in Sorrento

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I recently honeymooned in Italy and started our trip with 2 nights in Sorrento. I am amazed by some of the reviews on this site as our experience could not have been better. Our check in was wonderful and we were upgraded to the beautiful Pompei Suite with two terraces overlooking the water. Our views were unbelievable and the suite was beatiful. The hotel grounds are amazing and the walk way into the hotel took our breath away each and everytime we returned from town.

The service was outstanding -very attentive without ever being snooty. The food was also excellent and the views from the restaurant unbeatable.

We stayed in a series of top hotels in Italy (Caruso in Ravello, and San Clemente Palace in Venice) and the Vittorio was definitely one of our best experiences!

Favorite Hotel in Italy!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria was by far our favorite hotel during our 3 week Italian vacation, futhermore, my husband was impressed by this hotel, and he lived in Italy for many years!
The service: AMAZING!
I am a vegeterian, and every night the chef would put whip up something not on the menu to accomodate my preferences.

Be sure to spend the extra money for a waterfront's worth every penny! When we first arrived, we had a room with no view, after one day we switched, and it was amazing...we even had dinner in our room one night on the balcony.

The acoustic guitar played nightly on the veranda is something we'll never forget.

I honestly can't think of anything negative to say, except our disappointment when it was time to leave! Next time we travel to Italy, I will be extended my stay at this particular hotel!

A dream honeymoon

from A TripAdvisor Member
I cannot imagine where the bad reviews are coming from except that people must not know how to appreciate a beautiful hotel when they see one. My husband and I spent three days and nights of our honeymoon at the Excelsior Vittoria in June 2005. From the moment we arrived, we felt like royalty. We took the private transport from the airport and the bell hop met us a the curb to take our bags. We did have a slight delay with checking into our room, but we spent the time having a delicious lunch and enjoying the views of the water from the hotel terrace. When we got to our room, it was well worth the wait. Because it was our honeymoon, the very courteous staff upgraded our room to a deluxe seaview. Shortly after settling into the room, we were greeted by fresh cheese, fruit and a bottle of Asti to toast our honeymoon, compliments of the management. The lift down to the water is very convenient. The hotel is centrally located so it is easy to get around Sorrento by bus or hydrofoil, as well as exploring the other local towns and Capri. Honestly, the hotel is worth a retreat from the touristy areas and is nice enough to not leave the grounds and still have a fabulous vacation. My only complaint from our stay was the obnoxious tourists who stayed at the hotel who seemed to have money but lacked class letting two teenage daughters run wildly and loudly through the hotel without supervision. I will gladly return to the Excelsior Vittoria the next time I am in Sorrento.

Honeymoon Lowpoint

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have lived in Italy, traveled extensively throughout Europe and I understand the difference between an Italian 5 star hotel and one in New York, and yet I was surprised by the low level of survice, food quality and ambiance at Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria. My husband and I stayed there for four nights during our honeymoon in Italy in mid-June of 2005.

From the moment we arrived for our honeymoon, we were not treated as the "VIP honeymoon package" had implied. We were supposed to get early check-in, and when we checked in later than the normal check-in time, our room was still not ready. We waited in the lobby, and were later led into a dirty, dust-filled room which did not contain the views we were promised in our package. The staff was rude, inconsiderate and slow--even after the air conditioner was broken, we remained in our room because we could not find another hotel on such short notice. The restaurants are horrible; much better food can be found at any cafe in Piazza Tazzo- we actually loved Caruso- a restaurant right around the corner from the hotel, off the piazza. The hotel's elevators and some corridors smelled like mold, the ceiling in the hair salon was falling apart and overall the hotel was a complete waste of money. We stayed at Le Sirenuse in Positano (30 minutes from Sorrento) for the same price and adored it. We will certainly return there!

I understand many people love this hotel, and perhaps I am a tough critic, but I would not reccommend it to anyone I know, nor will I be returning. The Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria needs to be removed from the Leading Hotels of the World, as it is bringing the reputation of the company down to a less reputable status. This hotel is overpriced, outdated and a waste of a vacation in my opinion.

truly a 5 star hotel

this hotel is beautiful. we went for cocktails and decided to switch hotels, and we enjoyed teh rest of our stay in sorrento in this hotel. its absolutly beautiful, we will definitely be returning. our room had a great view and a lovely terrace. the hotel is in the best location, right in the center square of sorrento, and just an elevator ride down stiars will take you to the port where you will find ferrys to capri and other islands. the food is great, and the outside retaurant has a beautifyl view. definitely the best hotel in sorrento i'de reccomend it to anyone who wants a great stay in a beautiful place with a fabulous location. the only setback was that the staff didnt smile enough but still, they were very accomidating and helpful. it is a beautiful hotel all round.

t have been better

from A TripAdvisor Member
I can only think that any bad reviews of this hotel are written by the management to stop a deluge of visitors spoiling the oasis of calm and fabulousness that is this hotel. Having stayed all over the world for work and pleasure at hotels of every standard, this was head and shoulders above the rest at every level. Fantastic friendly but unobtrusive service, great food, brilliant bedlinen and rooms to die for, it is the most amazing place - it managed to upstage both Sorrento and the bay of Naples and that is some achievement. WOW. WOW. WOW.

Great View; Tired Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
A hotel that is resting on its past glory. The location is spectacular. The hotel is set back from the road down a lovely garden drive. The gentleman at the front desk was polite at best; did not extend himself in anyway. Just asked for our passports and shoved a piece of paper at me to sign. The porter and the gentleman who took us to our room were friendly. The room was a corner room on the top floor in the main building with no balcony despite my request for one when I made the reservation. The view of Mount Vesuvius and the coastline of the Gulf of Naples was spectacular. The room was tired. The floors are hardwood; the walls are partially covered in a fake marble. The chandelier over the bed had been moved and the old metal receptacle with wiring was still next to it. Dreary gold and green drapes with the same color bedspreads made the room depressing. The bathroom was large with two drains in the middle of the floor; the towels were thin. There was a methane type smell in the bathroom which might be due to the fact that the hotel is on a cliff over the water. I wondered if it came from the drain in the floor since I wasn't sure what the purpose of that was. Breakfast which is included was excellent with many options. The hotel is in a very good location for walking and shopping. The view is what saves this hotel.

great view old property scary place

from A TripAdvisor Member
This place reminded me of the movie the Shining. Big old vacant place cold noisey etc. In fairness to the hotel it was off season so there was nobody there but this place still a big old hotel. Old carries with it things like noisey floors old furniture old elevators etc. Staff was pretty much invisible and those that were visible were not to excited to help with your concerns. The views were pretty special and well worth seeing. If you are going to stay down Sorrento way and want to be on the water this is the only game in town. I would suggest going down the coast further and looking for something newer.

Top Local Tips for Sorrento

Take the ferry to Capri We had a guided day trip but you could do it on your own. Take the chair lift to see the views of the island, tour the town for lunch and shopping, take a boat ride around the island - you'll see many huge, huge yachts!

Good Restaurant Il Buco- Peppe the owner is entertaining and the food is to die for.

Hire a driver It is worth every euro to have a private driver for tha Amalfi drive ours took us to a wonderful restaraunt with magical seaviews for lunch - it made the trip so special.
