Myself & my boyfriend booked into this hotel for 4 nights and left on the the third day very tierd, unwell and almost 600euro poorer. The location of the hotel is ok for younger people but not for older people as it is abit of walk from Sorrento. The room was one of the worst I've stayed in the bedsheets, pillow and covers were completely damp and even though we complained to the staff nothing was done about this. Also we were kept awake as everytime the toilet in the room above us flushed you could hear it. The bed was really uncomfortable and the staff not that friendly and very accomadating. The brekfast was average and really for a 4 star hotel you would expect as they certainly like to water down the orange juices so they will go further! A bottle of beer cost 7euro! The only nice thing about this hotel was the view. We checked out on the third morning without as much as an apology from the hotel manager and with colds from the damp bed. We also talked to some other guests on our floor who mentioned they noticed the damp beds aswell !

Last August was mine, my mum's, dad's and sister's third stay at the Grand Hotel Ambasciatori, which certainly lives up to it's name, and we are going for our fourth time this week! Ignore any bad reviews about this hotel as they are simply NOT true! I absolutely adore staying here and I cannot wait to return. The rooms are lovely, clean and well-equipped, the bathrooms are also luxuriously designed. All of the staff at the hotel were the friendliest we have ever known and could ever wish to meet. The waiters don't simply sit you down, take your order and give you your food. They are friendly and smiley always working extremely hard and are attentive, giving you their devoted attention at all times. Sometimes there is a wait for a table but this was absolutely no problem as we had a nice drink in the Hotel's Afrodite Bar. I would definitely reccommend staying in the hotel for dinner, which most people do, as the food is of 6* quality and the menu always has good variety. The pool is in a beautiful setting and it is surreal laying on a sunbed by the pool on a cliff top, just glancing over your shoulder and seeing Capri, Mt. Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples! The weekly buffets on the terrace are a lovely treat and give you the excuse to get even more dressed up! We went there the first year and left with no regrets knowing we couldn't have chosen a better hotel anywhere in Italy and since then our visits keep getting better and better. We are among hundreds of guests who return there year after year and I can guarantee you will want to too! 110% reccommended if you want the holiday of a lifetime!

Beautiful Hotel!

This hotel is beautiful! My Husband and I were married on 31st May 2005 in Sorrento, and stayed at this amazing hotel. We had an fabulous sea view from our room, so romantic. I also would like to mention how clean our room was we had daily maid service, and how friendly and helpful all the staff were. I would also like to point out from our personal opinion from a couple who are not used to being waited on or staying in such luxury that it can at first seem a little posh and intimidating - but after the first day we quickly became accustomed to it and enjoyed every minute of our two week stay there. The gardens and bathing platforms are lovely and we never had a problem in getting a sunbed no matter what time of day it was. Sorrento and the surrounding areas have much to offer, so the hotel is a beautiful base to stay and the main square is only 10 minutes away. we would recommend both sorrento and this hotel.

Ambasciatori a beautiful oasis

Spent 5 days at the Ambasciatori would return in a minute. Our room was great - view fantastic - service from the front desk amazing. The morning breakfast was like a Sunday brunch every morning. I have read the reviews about small rooms and I suspect they came from the package tour operators. The garden is the best place to relax. The are little corners to be alone. The pool was a bit chilly but nice. Our driver told us all the Brits vacation in Sorrento, all the Americans in Positano, and all the Germans in Ischica - which was pretty much true. Don't bother with Capri, you don't need the crowds. Read Rick Steve's book he is right on target about this area. Close walk to train drops you right off at Pompeii, couldn't be easier.
Amalfi coast drive, the buses come roaring into Positano at 8 in the morning so if you want to avoid the buses get to Positano before 8. Ravello is a must - so quiet and beautiful.

Superb food

Stayed at the Ambasciatori for our honeymoon in June. Little disappointed with the room as very small and dated & only a view of the road. However, this was easily made up for by the friendliness of the staff and the excellent food each evening. I can honestly say we have never stayed anywhere where the food has been this good consistently. If you get to the restaurant by 7.30 each evening you can usually get a table by the window and watch the sun set over Capri.

Wonderful Hotel and wonderful staff

Stayed there for 2 nights. Wife and I had a room with a hug terrace that looked out over the sea. We had booked standard (no view) rooms for our kids, but the front desk staff were kind enough to upgrade them to a sea-view free of charge. The breakfast buffet was overflowing with every kind of food you could want...and champagne also. The lunches out on the terrace were memorable not only because of the quality food but because of the beautiful location. It was the nicest (and most expensive) hotel of our 2 weeks in Italy. You really won't be dissappointed. The sea-bathing platform was nice and the gardens were immaculate.

It was a short walk from the train station, but if you have luggage then just get a taxi. It costs at 10-12 Euros for us from the train station to the hotel for 4 people and all of our luggage. It was WELL WORTH IT.

Read alot of excellent reviews about this hotel but came away just a little disappointed. Don't get me wrong. Its a good hotel with fabulous views and the lobby area is great. Breakfast also is fantastic and the front desk were always helpful and polite. But its the small details that make all the difference and this is where the hotel is lacking. The room we got was ok but nothing out of the ordinary. We asked for a queen/king bed but got 2 beds that kept slipping apart - hardly romantic! There was a bog-standard pretty small bathroom.Also, although the waiters were polite enough, they were not very friendly and just took your order and gave your food. There was no attentiveness to the service. We came away wondering what it would have been like to stay at one of the other 4* hotels and whether they would have been better. Always a shame when that happens!

Beautiful hotel, below average room

Stayed at the Ambasciatori May 4th 2005. Booked four months in advance and paid 250 Euros. Hotel and property are beautiful, the view and location spectacular. The room was small, old and in need of repair. Asked for a queen or king and received two twins that kept sliding apart during the night. Staff were very professional and helpful.

Not a puff from Vesuvius !!

My wife and I have just returned from a week in Sorrento where we stayed in the Ambasciatori.

This hotel is rated in the Thomson brochure as a 5T and "Gold Medal" winner. But, by comparison with, say, the Cliff Bay Hotel in Madeira it doesn't quite warrant the same status. Don't get me wrong - it's a lovely hotel. The location is ideal - just a short 10 minute, or so, walk to the main square, Piazza Tasso. The public areas are spotlessly clean and the gardens are well laid out and very attractive.

Our room was well above average size with a lovely sitting area and a huge balcony. We had paid the extra for a deluxe room with sea view and I would certainly recommend this if you are planning to stay at this hotel. The view across the bay was wonderful - with Vesuvius looking deceptively benign.

We had opted for the half board option and, when the Chef did what he is good at, the food was very acceptable. The menus were three course with a choice of around five dishes for each. They let themselves down very badly when they tinkered around with a choice of four course set menus one evening, and with a very lack-lustre buffet the following day. Annoyingly, one could not book a table in the restaurant in advance and had to take pot luck on availabilty when one wanted to eat. On some evenings this resulted in delays of up to 20 minutes. The restaurant staff were all very pleasant and attentive although occasionally the kitchen didn't seem to be able to cope with the volume.

Breakfast was very good - an excellent choice of cereals, juices, cold meats, cheese, breads, freshly prepared omelettes with your choice of fillings, etc.

So why have I only rated this hotel as "above average"? I think that it lets itself down a little on detail, and it's attention to detail that makes an "above average" hotel in to an "excellent" hotel.

Oh - and Vesuvius didn't even manage a puff - thank goodness!!

Wonderful Hotel

We, and our three teenage boys, loved this hotel. We almost didn't book it because your ratings were so low. We are glad that we relied on other information and stayed here. The hotel was immaculately clean. The rooms large and very comfortable. The views were unparalleled. Staff were always helpful and friendly. Breakfast was one of the best we had in any hotel in Italy. We can't rate the dinners because we loved to be out walking through town and dining along the way. The location is close to the train station and just a short walk into town. The grounds were beautiful. We loved the setting and the views. Our only disappointment is that the "beach" wasn't open until May 1 and we were visiting the last few days of April. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Absolutely wonderful hotel

We returned from a four night stay in the Ambasciatori late last night and I can't wait to go back again. It is truly a most wonderful hotel, not one thing can I fault!
Our rooms were immaculately clean with high quality furnishings and a magnificient view from the large balcony overlooking the Bay of Naples. The foyer and lounge extremely comfortable - not opulent, but elegant and very stylish.
We were a little worried, travelling with two ageing parents with mobility and sight difficulties, but nothing was too much trouble for the friendly, professional and very patient staff, from the concierge to the chamber maid.
The hotel serves a beautiful breakfast (although buffet) in a magnificent dining room, and dinner was very fine cuisine. The views from the integral terrace just stunning!!
Despite being early in the season the pool and gardens were clearly open and ready for business - very well presented, and the snack area offers first-class pizza and other tempting specialities.
I can't wait to go back and experience more of the same.

Top Local Tips for Sorrento

Busy in August In August there are a number of festivals that take place. They celebrate a religious event and parade through the streets which is a wonderful experience to be part of. They also host musical events at the Cloisters so it can be busy, but this all adds to the atmosphere of a magical place. Although busy, its a great month to be in Sorrento. Parking is as rare as hens teeth so if you do plan to hire a car, be prepared to be patient in the traffic and in finding a spot to park!

trip to Capriand The Blue Grotto Catch the first ferry over as later ferries and the isalnd is mobbed with tourists. The Blue Grotto is fun but overattd. The best and bigger Blue Grotto is on Malta.
