Top Local Tips for Sorrento

Organised trips Don't spend a lot of money on organised excursions. Public transport -- buses and the Circumvesuviana railway -- is very good value and very reliable. There is hardly anywhere that is not served by a bus. The area is broken down into zones with tickets good for the bus and the train. You can buy tickets at bars and some shops. Ask about weekend tickets that allow unlimited travel within a zone.

Climbing Vesuvius Bring trainers to climb Vesuvius - sandals are useless as the path is full of small stones and gravel. On Capri be sure to take the round the island bus tour and go on the cable car at Ana Capri - amazing scenery.

Safety for women As a young woman, I just wanted to add that at no point during my stay in Sorrento did I feel threatened or in any way the object of unwanted attention. I have felt more uneasy in Florence. The people of Sorrento are friendly, approachable and happy to help. The main shopping streets in Sorrento are busy and well-lit even at night, and buses run frequently all over the town. You simply need to walk with confidence and dress sensibly (no low cleavages or miniskirts). Naples at night may be different, but as far as Sorrento's concered, I think it is perfectly all right for a woman on her own; indeed, there were a few ladies travelling independently at our hotel and no one reported any problems.
