This hotel offers a great continental breakfast and exceptional "family style service" that you can rarely find. The rooms are small, but the views of the countryside are fantastic.

Beautiful Garden Views

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I stayed from 22nd - 25th May and booked the hotel at short notice. The room we stayed in was very small and not particularly comfortable but we were told about this when we booked so extra points for honesty. The other rooms we saw were bigger and more comfortable though. The garden is quiet and tranquil with lovely views down the valley. You can have breakfast in the garden and it is a lovely place to sit with a bottle of wine in the evening particularly on a city type holiday when you have been walking round the sights all day. The 15 - 20 minute walk into the centre of Siena is not a problem unless you are very unfit and there are several different routes through the narrow streets if the main drag gets boring so don't let this put you off. Staff are excellent and cannot do enough for you.

Nice little hotel; has some drawbacks

from FayettevilleTraveler
We picked this hotel after seeing it in Rick Steve's book. It did have a great garden (or backyard for US readers) with a wonderful view. We stayed here for three nights and the first night we had a ground level room. It was bare and filled with old furniture. We heard people walking above us all night long as the hallway was dirrectly above us for the top floor. The next two nights we were upstairs in a split level room which was much more quiet. Make sure you ask for an upper level room! It is quite a walk to the sights (not that far but all uphill into the center of Siena). We felt like the host, Lorenza only wanted to help us find things with one tour company. We had written her several weeks ahead of time about booking a bike tour and she said we could do it when we arrived. Upon arrival we were told the company she uses had no tours available. She made no offer to look into another company and didn't really care about helping us. She did book us a nice wine tour but also couldn't find us any cooking classes that they advertised were offered. If the one main company she used didn't have it she wasn't going to help you find it. There was also no computer access here which I found strange as the two other hotels we stayed at in Italy were smaller and offered free internet. The beds were old and very uncomfortable compared to our other hotels. It wasn't horrible; but I don't think it would be worth it to stay here again. The hotel was full every night and the hostess seemed very stressed the whole time.

Best kept secret in Siena

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here for 3 days the first weekend of February 2005. A great find outside the gate to Siena. Do not let the fact that it is located outside the gate scare you off. We walked everywhere. We had room #19 with a private balcony that overlooked a valley. I am sure it is even more beautiful in the spring and summer. Room was spacious, bath small but well appointed and very quiet. The Santa Catarina served the best continental breakfast we had out of all the hotels we stayed at on our month long trip in Italy and also the best coffees. It does have a lift which is a plus and the staff was wonderful. One of the maids was even able to do some emergency mending for us. Also the best meal of our entire trip was a couple blocks from here at the Fouri Porta. Beef tenderloin and pork dishes were as good as anything we have had in the states. Would stay here again for sure!

B feel to the hotel

from JJJTC
We stayed here in September and had room#19 which is the only room with a balcony facing a beautiful view. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We are walkers so they walk into Il Campo was nice. There is also a little store nearby to get wine, cheese, etc. to eat outside in the garden or if you have the balcony. The breakfast was good too and can be eaten outside. Loved staying here-peaceful after Rome!

Wonderful garden, substantial breakfast, but a bit far away from Il Campo

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Santa Caterina for one night in late October. The woman who greeted us at the hotel, Lorenza, provided us with a warm welcome, explaining all the details we neeed to know to make our short stay more enjoyable. However, when we returned later that evening, the receptionist was quite rude and tried to hurry us up when we were asking him questions. The rooms are simply furnished but the walls and floors are quite thin and we could hear the voices and footsteps of the family staying above us. Their breakfast buffet is quite substantial compared to the other hotels we have stayed in in Italy, with a plentiful assortment of cold cereals, yogurts, cold meats, cheeses, freshly-squeezed juices, bread, and pastries. The waiter who was attending to us was very pleasant as were the chambermaids responsible for cleaning the rooms. The hotel is also located a bit far from the town center or Il Campo. All in all, I thought it was worth the stay despite the rude and absent evening service (and the fact that we had to pay for parking).

A Wonderful Place To Stay

from ElJayBee
We were thoroughly pleased during a 3-night stay at Hotel Santa Caterina in early October 2004. Our room was quite large with simple furnishings and a nice, big bed. The bathroom was large, too, with both a tub and separate shower stall. Best was the view of the rolling Tuscan hills from our window. Make sure to ask for a room in the back, which offers views and eliminates traffic noise from the busy street in front. Front-desk service was a bit hit-or-miss, but mainly friendly and helpful. Breakfast staff was cheery and service was prompt. Breakfast was quite good, with various cold cereals, juices, yogurt, cold meats & cheeses, rolls and pastries. We unfortunately could not enjoy breakfast in their beautiful garden due to inclement weather. The hotel is located an easy 15-minute walk from Il Campo, with several shops and restaurants along the way. If you're interested in a Chianti wine tour, the front desk will help book it through Cor Magis travel (ask for a tour with Franco...he's the best!). I would stay at this hotel and would recommend it to anyone visiting Siena who doesn't mind a short walk into the center of town.

Not the greatest

from A TripAdvisor Member
Hotel is 15 minute walk (uphill) to Campo. Room had bathroom on 1st floor, bed up winding staircase to loft. Not greatest when in your 50s and get up several times a night. Ha.
Breakfast was okay. Hotel is 7-10 minute cab ride to the train station.

Nice hotel, great service

from daddymac1
Very nice property, with beutiful views from the garden and some rooms. The service from the front desk was great. They advised of a good restaurant close by (Fouri Porto), and booked a lovely wine tour. The breakfast was very good with a nice selection of meats, cheeses, and breads. Also yogurt, and several cereals and other things. I was impressed with this hotel. The walk to Il Campo is not far at all. The bus stop is directly out front and runs every 15 minutes. We usually rode the bus one way, and walked on the return. I would happily stay here again.

Nice stay in Sept.

We very much enjoyed our one night at the Santa Caterina. The walk to Il Campo was kind of nice because you got to see a bit more of the town that way. Our room was nice and the staff was helpful. Our favorite part though was the garden with the views of Tuscany. It was the perfect place to enjoy some wine and then berakfast the next morning!

a Tuscan jewel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Santa Caterina in early September and loved it. The staff was very helpful, giving accurate directions to help us find our way around Tuscany by car. As a side note, if you rent a car, get the smallest one that you can get your luggage in as the parking is really tight.

The breakfast was very nice and the garden setting to eat it in was the most incredible of our trip. The walk to Il Campo is a bit of a hike but the beauty of the city makes it a pleasant walk. Our room overlooking the garden was spacious, very clean, and very quiet.

We would highly recommend this hotel if you do not mind the walk to Il Campo.

Top Local Tips for Siena

Not the easiest to find while driving It was a miracle we found it driving from rome. Driving signs off of the A1 to SS223 (SR223?) get sparser when you leave the highway and are extremely confusing even if you are a Rhodes Scholar. Have a good map, don't be afraid to stop and show it to the gas station attendant to ask him to point you which direction or road as they are usually not labeled as they would be in any other country. When you see the wall of the city, you know its at least close because its just outside the wall. Relax and prepare for lots o U-turns if you guess the wrong street, becasue chances are you probabaly will. The hotel's map needs to be much more specific with photos of intersections as it is insane. Oh, and there basically is only street parking, or a spot for a pretty small car for 10 or 15 euros behyind the hotel if you are lucky, but parking it will only be easy if your european otherwise if you are american, ask the lobby attendant to do it and give him a little tip.

Duomo Don't miss it. Particularly the Library.
