Top Local Tips for Siena

palio This is not really a participative event for the visitor - you just basically watch the locals going thro their festivities/traditions/ processes. The campo itself is very crammed full of people - you will get pushed, elbowed (possibly pushed over), jostled etc, although exciting it is also at times concerning (occassional blows). Not a place for young children. You really need to have been there to know what to expect. The trials/practices are are just as crammed, but something of a non event. The tip on the day of the palio is to get there 4hrs before the off as they close it off early, stand at the highest end (you dont need to be at the barrier) and watch the race at the lowest end.

Great food 1. You need to eat the gelato 2. You need to buy the Pan Forte, it's a very good "cake", and great for gift. 3. On the way to the center, after passing the arch gate, walk about 3,4 minutes you will find a restaurant name "Osteria Titti" on your right, the food is a genuine Italian Tuscan food, our group chose each different dish, and they were all excellent. The price is right too.

The Feel of the City My husband and I walked through the city down to the Plaza. It took about 20 minutes. We were impressed with the number of people strolling along. Every age group was represented. We looked in the shop windows and asked for directions from a police officer. The people could not have been nicer. Picked out a simple pizzeria for dinner. The food was good and quite reasonable. It was dark when we walked back to the hotel. Only one incident when a motorcycle pulled out of an alleyway and almost knocked us down.
