Definitely not a 4*

The hotel is basically good and clean but in our opinion more akin to a 2 star hotel. Our smallish rooms were immediately next to the street and for most of the night we were awoken by passing buses, traffic and pedestrians. The air conditioning was blowing hot air when cold was selected and the toilet seat was the thinnest plastic imaginable - threatening to trap the skin of your thigh at any minute when it collapsed. And the ice in the minibar was one solid chunk that hadn't been changed for months. Service at reception was efficient although not particularly friendly - we asked for extra pillows and they were delivered promptly but when we asked how long it would take to drive to Bologna we were told three hours although it actually took us just over 1hr 45 minutes. It would be wrong to condemn this hotel because it offers reasonable value for money, parking and easy access to the city and campo where we enjoyed an excellent meal - but to claim it as a 4* hotel belies reality.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Athena

Yuck!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Hotel Athena was dirty, out-dated, had extremely thin walls (we could hear the intimate affairs of others in a room nearby) and looked nothing like the pictures used to advertise it. Don't waste your money! The only positives were the hotel's location and free parking. It was the worst place we stayed during a 12 day trip in Italy that took us to about 7 hotels and bed and breakfasts. I was so thankful we only planned to stay one night - I could not leave the hotel quick enough!

Good Hotel in a great location

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Athena Hotel for 6 nights over the new year period. The rates obtained were rather pricey. Our room was very clean, unusually large and very comfortable. Breakfast was good. Staff was friendly and helpful. It also has very good parking facilities . The hotel is located about 10 minutes away on foot from the town centre's Campo and from the main restaurant area. The hotel reception area was undergoing refurbishment so the reception was situated at a temporary location. My only complaint is the lack of internet facilities. A perfect location to base yourself for a 6 day tour of Tuscany !

4-star?

from all121star
First of all, the person from Fresno wrote, on June 10, that they didn't understand all of the negative reviews posted about the Hotel Athena and went on to say that the Hotel Athena was a "good, basic hotel". Good and Basic are not words normally associated with a 4-star hotel.

Anyway, we stayed in 7 hotels during our trip to Italy and the Hotel Athena, by far, was the worst. We stayed in five 3-star and two 4-star hotels and Hotel Athena was more like a 2-star, if not 1-star.
The location was good and the rooms were clean, but the ammenties and decorations were more like at 2-star hotel.
The main thing that made the Athena the worst place we stayed was the front desk staff. I guess with a 4-star rating comes an air of arrogance. Very unconcerned and distant.
I just don't see how they ever received a 4-star rating. Does the owner's brother work for the rating service? Maybe they would become a little more humble if their rating were a little less.

Stayed There Four Nights..........Room with a View

from CaWino
Quite frankly, I find the negative comments on this board a little difficult to understand. The Athena is a good, basic hotel, in a very good location, just inside the city walls near Porto San Marco. It is only about a 10-15 minute walk to Il Campo. They have parking, too.

Granted, it's not fancy and a little Spartan, but European hotels tend to be that way from my experience. Our room was clean and had a terrific view of the Tuscan countryside. The Athena also has a very nice open air terrace with a beautiful view. This made a very pleasant cocktail hour!

The breakfast was very mediocre, compared to other four star hotels that we stayed in throughout Italy. We did not eat at their restaurant, preferring an evening stroll into the central city. The hotel staff was helpful with recommendations. Speaking of four star hotels in general, they aren’t the same in Italy as the USA.

Positives: Location, terrace with a view, parking, clean room. Negatives: substandard breakfast, hotel is a little aged, spartan

Terrible

from sroma1
I recently returned froma two day stay at the Athena Hotel in Siena Italy, my advice would be to book elsewhere. The ONLY thing the hotel has going for it is the location. It was in need of an update, dirty and run down, and the staff less than helpful.

Loved The Athena

from Hannahsgram1
We had the pleasure of spending 5 nights at the Athena. Location was superb. We could park our car on site and walk into town every night. The hotel is old, but clean and the front desk staff went "above and beyond" in every way to make sure our stay was pleasurable. Better than most concierge service hotels, the staff made dinner reservations, suggested day trips and never tired of giving directions and helpful advise. Every employee's English for exceeded my Italian. I would highly recommend the Athena. Restaurant was only fair, but the sevice was excellent.

The Sound of Music

from A TripAdvisor Member
Hotel Athena was a great hotel in a great City. The experience was heightened by an impromptu late night guitar serenade to Italy's finest beverage, Whurer, on the terrace by a great bunch of friendly tourists. We soon got into the spirit of the occasion and joined in with said group on a few numbers whilst sucking back on a few coldies. This sort of comaraderie really makes my holidays.

As the Salterforth user rightly points out, the breakfast could have been improved with the addition of softer bread. However, I would recommend the hotel to anyone and look forward to going back at some stage.

great location and value

from A TripAdvisor Member
Good points....
first class location, a short walk uphill slightly to the centre. Nice reception, lower floor areas and toilets very modern. Car parking and ease of access from the way into Sienna excellent. The terrace area is great with good views of some of the city and the countryside.

bad points.......
breakfast the usual rubbish with stale concrete bread. Upper floors need renovating and are tired. The rooms were generally very good albeit in need of being ripped out and replaced. The shower pressure is one of the best in the world. Very powerfull. Rooms on the Duomo side have a balcony with a limited view of the roof of the Duomo.

This shouldnt be classed as a 4 star although it does have a god feel to it and I would gladly stay there again. The price represents excellent value..

Glorified Car Park!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Book this hotel if you want parking with in the city walls! If you want a nice clean room to stay in, then go somewhere else! Bathroom was like something out of the 70's and was so old that it was impossible for it to be clean. Siena was a wonderful place, this hotel nearly ruined our stay. Wish I had found this site before we went!

Hellhole

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was a terrible place and one of the worst hotels I've stayed at, if not the worst. I was very surprised it received 4 stars because it doesn't even deserve 2. The location was the only good thing about it, very quiet and within walking distance of Il Campo. I thought being honeymooners would evoke friendly service but after a few mumbled words of welcome, we were put in a small, basic room on the ground floor with a view of what looked like prison bars directly outside the supposed balcony windows. The staff were unfriendly and were sometimes missing in action everytime we wanted to obtain our room key. We'd arrive at the lobby to find a group of people impatiently waiting just to get their room keys! We almost missed our bus to Florence because the woman at reception failed to notify us that there was a delay with the taxis that morning even though we had told her how important it was for us to have a taxi booked to catch the bus. As it was, we had to walk a good 10 minutes with our suitcases to catch the bus on time. A travel agent recommended this place and I am never going through that travel agent again, simply because of this hellhole of a place they call Hotel Athena.

Top Local Tips for Siena

Money Try to understand your Euros and how much things cost. If they know your not sure and think you do not understand they will charge that extra Euro or two!

Great Dining in Siena Don't miss Osteria Nonna Gina - family run, excellent and very reasonable. Also try Osteria il Tamburino - small, quaint, very reasonable.

Venice without canals. Thanks UNESCO ,Siena stays a jewel against Florence.Advantage: Siena is direct in the Tuscany.Lots of Suuny days.
