Top Local Tips for Siena

Days before the Palio Try visiting Siena any time during the 3 or 4 days before July 2, the day of the Palio horse race. There are many time trail horse races, partymaking in the streets, people singing and cheering, parades through the small streets leading down to Il Campo. A generally wonderful time to experience this vibrant town with plenty of locals gearing up for the big day.

Buses from Florence Be alert when you put your luggage in the compartment on the side of the bus as this is not locked and it has been known that people get on and off just down the road taking other people's luggage with them. Stand to watch at every bus stop. While we were waiting for the bus to leave in Florence a Cabineri (military policeman) was watching people loitering in the area. He asked an unsavoury looking male who seemed to be quite agitated if he had a ticket for the bus. I was glad to see that these people were being monitored as sometimes the luggage doesn't even leave the terminal!
