Top Local Tips for Taormina

Budget for cab fares The terrain around Taormina is, like most of the islands coastal area, hilly. Cab fares are steep (15 euros for 1km in Taormina!!!), so be prepared to fork out a lot if you travel around. However, if you do dcide to go on a trip or visit an attraction further afield, don't be afraid to haggle and bargain a cab in advance, you would be surprised how accommodating they can be and they give you the full guide treatment as well !

Alcantara River Valley A great day trip with teenagers. You put on boats and rubber pants and immerge into the gorge. The scenery is priceless and alot of fun.

The Best Restaurants Are Out of Town As with many places in Sicily, establishments mentioned often in guidebooks and on this web site serve too large a proportion of tourists. Consequently, many restaurants have gotten an attitude toward tourists. Many treat them as second class citizens who deserve only mediocre service and food. The restaurants in Taormina have this problem. They push the cheap house wine and are surprised when you refuse it in favor of a bottle that's a better value. Their food is, at best, edible. For really good meals in the area, go down the hill to one of the adjoining beach towns. The best restaurant in the area -- and one of the two best meals we had in Sicily -- is La Capinera. It is on the beach along the main road in the little town of Spisone; about 5 kilometers from Taormina. Another highly regarded restaurant is Da Giovanni in Mazzaro. These two are Michelin rated restaurants and you'll pay a little more for your meal, but they're a much better value.
