New Suites not worth the price or the climb!

from A TripAdvisor Member
The staff were very nice and helpful, the breakfast was generous and delicious and both the room and the terrace had amazing views. We stayed in the new part of the hotel, a group of suites which had just been completed. Unfortunately the bugs had not been worked out yet, and there were some problems with our room. When the room next to us used their shower, a terrible noise shook the wall and as the hotel is on a fairly busy road each time a car passed the room vibrated. There was construction noise all day, starting at 8am (obviously the hotel cannot control everything, but it really was loud). The hot tub which was described on the website was not in use, and the website did not mention that it was a 15-20 minute walk down steep stairs to the main area of town if you did not take the once hourly bus or pay for a taxi. We payed something like 320Euros a night, and would have liked something a little finer for it. It seems as though the rooms in the original part of the hotel would be more charming.

The one and only choice in Taormina

from A TripAdvisor Member
When it comes to a spectacular view of Taormina, the Ionian Sea and Mt. Etna, a breakfast of Sicilian specialties on the veranda and sincere hospitality from the staff, there is only one choice...the Hotel Villa Ducale. This was our second stay at this great hotel and we had the time of our life. The food, the accommodations and the personalized attention and service from the staff makes this a great hotel. They say people are the key and here the people are the hotels' biggest asset...a truly great staff. You can tell they like what they do. I would unhesitantly recommend this wonderful's more than just a hotel it was an experience. We will be back, A presto!!! Craig F. Erie, PA

Cancelled our reservation

from A TripAdvisor Member
We were looking forward to staying here and had booked six nights in a suite -- the last three days of April and first three of May.

When we noticed they were offering an April discount on the usual rate for suites we requested the discount for the first three nights of our stay. The hotel refused our request and said they had instead given us other discounts -- free breakfast and a free crib for our baby which would normally cost Euro 30 per night, they said.

However, breakfast is always included in the rate at this hotel, and when we had a friend check for us the hotel told them in a written e-mail that they do not charge for babies. So actually, we were given no alternate discounts in spite of the hotel's claim.

We were tremendously disappointed that the hotel would not honor its advertised discount, and that they had contrived their explanation. We cancelled our reservation. It's too bad, because the hotel seems lovely, but we could not spend roughly $2,000 U.S. dollars there knowing they did not keep their word and that they had tried to mislead us. We hope others have a better experience.

The most perfect spot in the world..

My husband and I spent our honeymoon in October 2004 traveling around Italy and Sicily and found Villa Ducale by a friend that highly recommended it. We loved Villa Ducale and if we could have planned our trip again we would have included more time in Taoromina, Sicily and at Villa Ducale. The personal service from the moment we got there until we left three days later was wonderful. We were greeted upon our arrival by the manager and the owner who helped us settle in and then we sipped champagne while watching the sun set, the sea and Etna. At that moment we new we at a special place. The views were breathtaking, the food wonderful. The town of Taormina is just a few mintues walk from the hotel and was a great place to dine, shop and meet people. My husband and I are hoping to return in a couple of years for our anniversary. Try it, you'll love it!!

Call me over romantic and over sentimental but when having breakfast on the terrace of Villa Ducale, I knew: this is as pretty as it gets?

A wonderful, relaxing holiday

from A TripAdvisor Member
I cannot recommend this hotel too highly. The setting is stunning, the service is excellent and the breakfast is top quality. The rooms themselves are very attractively furnished and very comfortable. I felt thoroughly refreshed and relaxed after my visit. The hotel offered us a wide range of different services and even provided a guide to different walks on the island. I will recommend the hotel to all my friends and hope to return for another visit in the near future.

The highlight of our Italy trip

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Italy. The four days we spent at the Villa Ducale in Taormina were the best four days of our entire two week trip. Taormina is incredibly beautiful, and the Villa Ducale is in an excellent location from which to experience the beauty of the cliffside village and recommend it highly if you are looking for a small (20 or so rooms) charming hotel with a very attentive staff. We paid 280EU a night (high -season) and we were not disappointed ; each of the rooms has a balcony/terrace that overlooks the sea. We stayed in a Suite (it was located in the annex building) and would highly recommend the Suites as the bathroom with Jacuzzi , balcony and bedroom where all very spacious and with the best views of the sunsets, ocean, and view of the italian continent . Our terrace had a small table where you could sit and enjoy your breakfast in the morning, as well as 2 rocking chairs and gorgeous climbing flowering plants. We feel that the views from the Villa Ducale are better than any hotels of the village because you get a better panorama of all of Taormina, the ocean and Mount Etna . The service is outstanding. Sebastiano and Rosario at the front desk are very helpful and speak excellent English. The housekeeping did an amazing job each day and even folded our clothes!.
And the breakfast room is absolutely stunning, with an open air terrace where you can enjoy your breakfast and the views at the same time ( and the local home made food is great) .Yes, there are a lot of steps getting to the hotel and the town below, but Taormina is a village nestled on a cliff. You will need to do a lot of walking no matter which hotel you stay at. However they had a shuttle van that would drive you down to the centre , which saved on the public transportation . For the price, this hotel cannot be beat. Many others we saw are also very nice but much more expensive. If you're looking for a wonderful affordable hotel in Taormina, I would choose the Villa Ducale . We will definitely be coming back !

The Changing Face of Mt. Etna

from KomodoWoman
Never been to Sicily? Go. Then, head straight for the Villa Ducale Hotel in Taormina, situated high up the slopes of Mt. Tauro, which overlooks the Ionian Sea and faces off with hold your breath the active volcano, Mt. Etna, still smoking from last year s eruption. The Villa Ducale owners, Andrea and Rosaria Quartucci, greeted us with glasses of secret nectar, Sicilian blood orange juice. From that moment on, we were intoxicated by the charming hotel, Mt. Etna, and the picturesque ancient city of Taormina. The rooms are very comfortable, complete with cable TV, minibar, hairdryer, and remote controlled heat/air unit. We had two balconies, one for the perfect views of the sea and the volcano; the other for the view of the castle remains and of the Greek theater of Taormina below us. Breakfast is included and is a spectacular arrangement of Sicilian specialties including more of that blood orange juice. The staff, Francesca and Alessandro, takes good care of you. For your touring questions and restaurant needs, any of the staff will help you. Sebastian will also offer to guide you. We hired him for an incredible day of Mt Etna sights and a local winery. It wasn t until the day we left that we found out the owners had extended their boarding season to accommodate our vacation dates in early December. Normally, they would have been taking their own vacations. We remain truly grateful. We will return. The day we left, Rosaria showed us the layout for the addition to the hotel five new suites with a pool overlooking the valley below and the Ionian Sea. We can't wait.

Numero Uno!

You must stay here if you are romantic and love the "good life " at a bargain price. Be sure to bring your "lover" and get with the Sicilian way. The staff is like family and the food is great. The view, unbelieveable. Gaspare Chuck Oneto American Son of Sicilians

Top Local Tips for Taormina

lot of stairs be carreful Taormina is a very great city, but there are lot of stairs, you have climb every time, from your hotel to any point in the city and to the beach..

TRAVELING By All means, take PUBLIC transportation! You get the best views and are amoung the locals. What a way to find great hidden places; ask the locals!

Gastronomica The food is surprising with fresh herbs, artichokes, seafood, Sicilian cheeses and Sicilian wines. To my suprise during a one week stay I was not served a single red sauce dish and only one dish with a distinctive garlic flare. I usually let the server make recommendations. I was never disappointed. I think Sicilian wines were the real surprise.
