Just spent 3 nights at the Diodoro in the first week of December 2004 and was very pleased with all aspects of the room. We had a balcony on the 3rd floor overlooking Etna and Naxos bay. All of the reception staff were very helpful and spoke very good English. Only possible complaint was that the room could have been a little bigger but I paid about £90 per night for two people sharing B&B and for this it was good value. I asked for a bay/Etna view when I booked online and that is exactly just what I got.

I would recommend this hotel - the location is amongst the best in the village.

Me and my wife have just returned from Taormina after marrying there in October 2004. The Hotel (which I believe has been recently refurbished) is a very attractive building with lovely lobby, bar, patio, roof terrace, restaurant and pool (which sits at the edge of the cliff, beyond the communal gardens with outstanding views of Giardini Naxos Bay and Mount Etna).

Our room had breath-taking views again of Giardnin Naxos and Mount Etna, fortunately for us Etna was erupting when we were there and we could sit on our balcony at night and watch the lava flow.

The staff were very friendly and on the day of our wedding champagne was organised to be sent to our room by the receptionist. The restaurant is waiter service and may be a little slow for some peoples liking, but the food is good, staff friendly and if you like your desserts then it's perfect!

Probably the best thing about the Hotel is its location, right next to the Gardens, which means you can walk through them every day to the nearby locations. The main Town is a 5 minute stroll, and a couple of minutes further for the Aprille 9 Square, Teatre Greco and Cable Car Staion down to Mazzuro.

It was gamble for us getting married in Taormina due to never visiting before, but partly due to being made very welcome and comfortable at the Villa Diodoro we could not fault the whole occasion.

We were so disappointed with the rooms we booked that we checked out before staying there. Our room was dingy, small and not clean, with a view of the parking lot. The staff was arrogant and insinuated that you get what you pay for.. We walked across the street to the Bristol Park Hotel and paid less money for a lovely, spacious room with a balcony overlooking the bay and Mt. Etna.

A Great Disappointment

We stayed at the Hotel Villa Diodoro in June 2004 but will not be going back. The hotel is in a superb position but the staff were not welcoming at all. The waiters were polite but we seemed to be an inconvenience to them. Consequently, we felt like a number, rather than individuals. Some of the food was cold and the portions were sometimes small. The bar was running low on fruit juices and the only ones available were pear or peach juice. Not what we expected from a 4 star hotel. The only member of staff who was cheerful and looked pleased to see us was the chambermaid. If only the reception staff could have been the same. A great shame because otherwise the hotel has everything going for it.

Villa Di-Odor-O has some problems

This hotel has about 60 wonderful rooms (veiw of Naxos bay and Aetna, balcony) and 40 real stinkers. We were assigned a stinker, tiny, no view, traffic noise with windows open, loud A/C with windows closed, air intake for A/C provided an assortment of smells (Cigarette, faint sewage, deisel fumes). Source of the faint sewage odor (hence the moniker Villa Di-odor-o) was a leaking sewer conduit adjacent to the bar terrace, great for the park vegetation, bad for the appetite of pre-dinner drinkers during an evening on-shore breeze. View from the swimming pool and facilities are this hotels forte.
Caveat - Do not stay in this hotel without sea view, balcony clearly on your voucher and confirmed with the management!!!!!!!!

Fantastic Holiday! But improvements could be made!

I have just returned from 2 weeks at the Villa Diodoro Hotel, Taormina and had the most wonderful holiday. The position of the hotel is second to none and I don't think any other hotel in the area can quite compare. The pool area has an amazing view, as do many of the rooms, however a seaview must be requested on booking to avoid being allocated one of the smaller, lower floor rooms, it is well worth it! The hotel is plush, clean and very comfortable, and the outdoor bar area is a lovely place to enjoy those Sicilian wines, overlooking Mount Etna.

Having noted many of the other comments about the front of house staff, I think it is fair to say they are not over friendly. We did not personally have any problems for them to deal with but overall I would say their manner is not especially welcoming.

The main problem we felt was the standard of the restaurant. The staff were relatively efficient but the dining room really ran itself, because the managers did more wandering about than actually managing! They insist on allocating you a table at the beginning of your stay and you must use the same table every night after that. As many customers eat out in the evening, some of the best tables therefore go to waste.
Also the food is not of a particularly high standard considering its cost. It rarely tends to be hot, is obviously not freshly prepared and not a great deal of imagination goes into the side vegetables etc or the overall menu choice! (There is always a lot of veal on offer!!)

The best way to appreciate this hotel is perhaps to go bed & breakfast, as Taormina is just the most delightful little place and there is an endless amount of restaurants to choose from in the centre, only 10 minutes walk from the hotel.
You can also pay half board and swap dinner for lunch but this proves a more expensive option overall, with a very large meal at lunch time.

I would definitely stay at this hotel again purely because of its location, and if the management take on board these comments which seem to be recuuring so often, it could be the best place to stay in Sicily.

What a disappointmen!

What a disappointment this hotel was! I booked our room on line after reviewing all the photos I could of the hotel. Each site showed a large room with balcony overlook the sea (exactly what I was looking for). When we arrived we found access to the hotel was difficult, parking was inadequate, check in unfriendly and then we were escorted down to the bowels of the hotel where to our amazement we were given the smallest room I have ever seen (for $300 night). It had no balcony, only a small window with no view of the water or Mt. Etna, you could barely walk past the end of the bed and forget about opening a dresser drawer (it was too tight), the bathroom, or should I say closet with sink, toilet and tiny shower were horrid! I immediately returned to the desk and voiced my complaint, the staff quite frankly could have cared less, however, after refusing to accept the room they wanted to push down our throats they agreed to show us "the only other room they had available". It too was extremely small, but at least it had a larger window and view of the ajoining park. The location was good, however, there are many other much nicer hotels in Taormina that I would book next time. I highly recommend Taormina (beautiful village) but suggest you book elsewhere!

We have recently returned from a two week stay at this hotel. We had observed the comments about the hotel on this website before our holiday, which were mixed. However, we went with an open mind and could not have been more impressed. The hotel was immaculate, pool fantastic, food was faultless and all staff, including reception staff, could not have been more accommodating.
Our impression was that the average British tourist (and thankfully there were not many), was arrogant and ignorant. We found that if you were friendly and polite to the staff it was more than reciprocated.
Our experience was that this was an excellent hotel and we would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. We had the foresight to pre-book a room with a seaview and balcony, anyone who doesn't do this should not complain about what they get! The bathroom was small but sufficient, everything else superb.
Make sure you try the Sicilian wines!

We have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Hotel Villa Diodora and had an excellent time. We were suprised to read previous comments about the hotel staff, especially those at reception because our experience was that they were courteous & very helpful. They were always cheerful & welcoming.
We also found the food very good although there could, perhaps, have been a bit more variety at breakfast.
The hotel was spotlessly clean & the pool area was kept beautifully at all times.
All in all we would recommend this hotel to anyone who wanted a restful holiday in a stunning location.

My wife and I were at the hotel in June 2004. Except for the staff at the desk, the help was cordial. However, we felt the desk staff preferred NOT to be asked questions. The food was not well-prepared . . . cold entres, soggy pasta, tough beef, etc. Our room was clean and basic. The location is lovely, but I would not recommend the hotel as a four star hotel . . . barely two stars.

Top Local Tips for Taormina

acheology museum, folklore museum archeology museum not worth the walk. It seemed like a "work in progress" with only a few cases, pieces, and NO staff (i wonder if we went in when it was supposed to be closed). Folklore museum inside palazzo corvaja was just a couple of rooms with some fabrics, paintings and other stuff. Nice to go in just to see the building from inside, although it was VERY humid and full of mold.

Time to go? Great weather in February, but may have been unseasonal/unexpected as quite a few shops were closed and no excursions running. A good break from UK winter but not if you expect everything to be open/running. Investigate these if important to you.

Mount Etna Do the long trip - i.e. all the way up, as far as you can go without alpine guides - well worth it - take advice and have warm clothing and strong footwear, although you can these at a few Euros.The evening meal which you pay extra for was surprisingly acceptable - not cheap, but you pay for the location, and it was an exellent chance to talk to others on the trip of the experience.
