Wonderful Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have nothing but praise for this hotel. I stayed there on my honeymoon in June for two weeks and throughout the stay the standard of service was excellent. We had a room with a large balcony and breathtaking sea view. The pool is wonderful surrounded by a luxuriant garden, full of lemon trees and flowers and the food at the poolside restaurant was delicious. The hotel is thoroughly charming, relaxing and atmospheric and I definitely recommend it.

We stayed at the Villa Belvedere for 5 nights at the end of September 2004.

All in all we were rather underwhelmed by the experience. True the common areas were generally very well presented and the views from some parts of the Hotel were excellent.

We booked a seaview room with terrace in January and ended up with a rather disappointing room for the money. Yes, it did have a seaview but nowhere near as good as those on the upper floors, and yes, we did have a terrace, but the sun disappeared from it after 2 pm (unlike the rest of the property). The room itself was pretty unimpressive and the bathroom was miniscule - I couldn't turn round in the shower without disturbing the curtain and flooding the bathroom floor (by the way I'm 6' tall and 14 stone so hardly massively overweight!).

More worryingly we also had a rather awkward walk to get to our room that necessitated the negotiation of a muddy path and some slippery steps - this was particularly challenging at the start of the evening as the route could only be lit coming from the hotel rather than from our room. The journey to the room we had would certainly be completely unsuitable for anybody other than those in excellent physical health.

We found the staff helpful and friendly when asked, particularly with regard to booking local restaurants for our evening meal (the hotel does not have a restaurant), but this usually required prompting.

We would concur with other reviewer's comment regarding the prevalence of tour parties and with regard to the breakfast offer (although the view from the window tables was first class).

So overall not horrendous but certainly, in our opinion, not worthy of the rave reviews afforded the hotel by others - perhaps if we'd had a 3rd floor seaview room our opinion may have been different.

A lovely hotel

Looking at some of the negative reviews on this site I can't believe we stayed at the same place. Although we had reserved a room without a sea view - it was the only room left - when we arrived the very friendly and professional man on reception showed us the room we had booked plus a sea view room as there had been a cancellation. Although the sea view room was smaller - and cheaper - we took it in a flash because the view was gorgeous and the room had its own terrace with sun loungers. We found all the staff at the hotel very friendly, if sometimes a little slow. Breakfast was simple but good. We would definitely stay again.

Friendly hotel

Hotel Villa Belvedere is a charming hotel. Staff are very friendly and the rooms are well furnished, clean and comfy. Our room had a beautiful sea view. The only down side was that the noise from the road that ran below the hotel was very intrusive. Cars and coaches pipped their horns to warn approaching traffic on the hairpin bends and this went on from early morning to late into the night ! However this did not spoil a wonderful week in the resort.

A lovely hotel

I spent a week at the Villa Belvedere in September 2004 with my daughter. We were not part of an organised trip. Our first room was disappointing in that it faced the road but my request for a room change was dealt with efficiently and we moved to a top floor sea view room with balcony two days later, once one became available. I am surprised to read the two unfavourable reports also from September, paticularly relating to cleanliness - I found the poolside toilets to be clean every time I used them and didn't notice any filthy carpets. Breakfast was broadly the same every day - choices of cereal, fresh and dried fruit, yoghurts, at least 4 different breads/pastries, cheeses, eggs - but this is exactly what I would expect. I would certainly stay there again and would recommend it to friends.

Going back for the fifth time!

from StuartJones
Having just booked to go back for the fifth time we are obviously very impressed with this hotel. It sets out to be a very simple unpretentious hotel and exceeds expectation in nearly all aspects.

Its interesting to note the potential 'anti-american' comments by another reviewer. When we have stayed there there have always been mixes of English and American tourists. It has been our unfortunate experience to have American tourists spoil the tranquility of the place by acting innapropriately. This is not an anti-american statement, as the vast majority have behaved impecably, and its just an unfortunate fact that a poorly behaved few may have spoiled it for some others.

If you are looking for a lively hotel where you can 'bomb' into the pool and have a lively time, then its probably not the hotel fot you.

If you're looking for tranquility, beautiful views, and simple food, then it's spot on!

Very disappointing!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We HATED this hotel! Rarely, does a place invoke such reaction but the staff here was the worst. This hotel appeared to cater to English tour groups and if you were not in a tour group you felt rather unwelcomed. It did cross our minds that this place was anti-american but I cant support this theory with proof. It was just a feeling we both experienced. Although from what I observed not many people got good service. It seemed that everytime I walked in or out someone was complaining to the front desk about something or other. Not once did a staff member say good morning or offer a simple greeting. The views are so so from the hotel. The breakfast was the same everyday and got old after day 2. I liked the pool area but the pool bathrooms were not kept sanitary and clean! The carpet on the lower levels was just filthy! The location was nice but there are better options in this price range. I say look elsewhere. This hotel does not deserve to be listed in the top ten places to stay in such a beautiful city! Avoid the garden rooms at all cost!

t get a seaview

from A TripAdvisor Member
Do not book this hotel if you can't get a seaview room. The seaview rooms are all generally quite good. However, our room was not a seaview room and was terrible and not worth the money. The wallpaper was coming off of the walls and the sole window faced the main entrance and parking lot where it was impossible to get any privacy. Also, rooms do not have tone dialing which is required for many calling cards. You can use the office phone but not after 11pm. If you can't get a definite confirmation from the staff on a seaview room go somewhere else. This was the worst room I stayed at during my trip. In fairness to the hotel, the location is good and the pool is also very nice...just make sure you get the sea-view or nothing at all.

Nice cosy hotel in Taormina with excellent views

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at Villa Belvedere for eight days during our honeymoon last June. We had a room at the top floor with our own private balcony (with two loungers and parasol) with views of the sea to the front and Mt Etna to the right, it was absolutely fantastic.

The location of the Hotel is great, only a short stroll to the town centre. The staff were always courteous and helpful and the room, although quite basic, was clean.

Superb place at good price, I would definitely recommend it to all my friends

We loved the Villa Belvedere

from A TripAdvisor Member
I travelled to Taormina with my husband and 14 year old grandson. Our accomodation was very, good and we look forward to returning. There was a quiet elegance about the place and we considered the Villa Belvedere one of the nicest places we stayed in while in Sicily.

It was small, personal, very quiet. Out of 4 stars we give it a 3.
