Great hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberPerfect place to relax
from A TripAdvisor MemberAll told, we really couldn't fault the hotel, it is pricey but worth it for a special occasion. We were very relaxed when we left. Other reviewers have complained about the cleanliness of the hotel, but it was spotless. The cleaners came in twice a day or more if you needed it and any request was met instantly. The pool was very well maintained and did not have too much chlorine which was nice. Having a gin and tonic by the pool before the sun went down was a very nice way to end the day.
We would definetely go back to the Monte Tauro and Taormina again.
Great views
from PJJerseyAlthough we didnt have a problem it has a very, very steep access road which some will find a challenge. Being situated on a clff side means that there is nowhere to walk apart from the town which is full of tour groups.
Rooms are well appointed but having hardwood floors means that there is noise from guests walking around in the rooms above which can be annoying when they go to bed much later particularly well after midnight.
We heard that there might be noise from building works at the sideof the hotel, but that wasnt a problem.
Whilst the food was acceptable, it was no more than average 4* hotel food. Also they seemed to be running on a tight budget, I have never stayed in an Italian hotel where Antipasta was an alternative to the first course, rather than the traditional Italian starter to the meal. Sweets were extreemly limited, and guests restricted to one small slice to be cut by the waiter.
we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay at our Hotel. we would like to clarify just one thing about the restaurant's variety of food. Our Hotel offers to all guests an "à la carte" Menu which includes a wide choice of typical dishes, comprehensive of "starters", "first courses", "main courses", "side dishes" and "fruits and desserts". Our half board set menu foresees 4/5 choices of "first courses" with salads buffet, "main courses" with 2 side dishes and "desserts". Guests can add to this set any extra course from the "à la carte" menu.
Our Chefs propose every day a different "Menu of the day" and our "Maitre d'hotel" is at guests disposal for any suggestion on food and wine.
We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again and let you change your opinion on our "cuisine".
Best regards,
Monica Mennella
Beautiful View BUT expected more from a 4 star hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberI expected also from a Junior Suite to have Bath robes and not only 2 towels.
The room has a beautiful view, the bed is very comfortable but I asked many times for a softer pillow that never arrived.
The pool is great and servise very friendly and kind.
We where disappointed from the breakfast, especially for the Cappuccino or espresso that you have to make it by your own with an automatic machine.
In overall the hotel is very nice but they could be much more with the service and cleaning.
I apologize for the trouble you had but let reassure the following:
- Cleaning is one of our priorities as you can read from other opinions. Occasionally , bathtubes can be used improperly and it might take time to fix them.
- Bathrobes are at guests disposal by asking at the concierge. It is our pleasure to pamper our guests with this and many other services.
- Our breakfast is much appreciated by our guests and we thank all of them for the very nice comments on it.
I hope you will visit us again and riconsider your opinions on it.
Best Regards,
Monica Mennella
great views from a great hotel
from carolqPool is lovely as is the pool side cafe. service was flawless and the decor splendid in a classic seventies style.....
its proximity to the Greek Theatre and Via Umberto was also a bonus.
if your are driving just be brave and persevere with the sometimes scary roads of Taormina and the Hotel on Via Roma is well signposted.
The only negative is the cost but hey for Taormina we did grab a bargain.... there are more expensive hotels.
Beautiful Location
from A TripAdvisor MemberYou can wake up and then look out to an endless ocean.
We stayed in late November and the hotel rates were low season. Still quite exspensive.
The rooms were ok. Do not get a room on the floor beneath the breakfast room. The noise in the morning wakes you up!.
The air condioning is also bad as smoke from other peoples cigarettes drifts into your room.
The staff were helpful and one called Fureo was fantastic.(he is the concierge)
The breakfast was lovley. Lots and lots of beautiful food.
All in all i would say the hotel is worthy of a 4 star but one or two things do let it down. I think customer service is new to Sicily so dont expect too much!
Make sure you hire a car before you go if you want go anywhere and get insurance.
lovely hotel
from holimThere is a lovely big pool and a pool man that hands out towels every morning. Breakfast is great - all the trimmings ... people did say it is better to eat in the restaurants in Taormina for dinner as you have so much choice.
Nice restaurants are: Al Giardino (€60-80 for 4 course dinner and wine), Le Giara (€120approx for dinner), Al Dumo, La Barenessoa (very expensive -€168 on average for a meal but worth a treat... average prices for restaurants in Taormina is between 60-80EUR
Hotel is clean and people very friendly....i would go back again to stay there
Beaches are all pebbly but one can go to Giardini Nixos for a sandy beach.
Go to Mt etna will tour as its great.. we also hired a car for a day and its fine also. Siracus is worth a trip and there is a white sandy beach called Fountaine Blanche beach 13K below Siracusa
super hotel
from d.currieLovely hotel but beware steep steps!
from caramckStaff were also helpful, and breakfast served until 11am, the latest I have had in Italy, pool area was also lovely, they have a 'pool man' who gives out towels, and loungers so you can't put your towels down and disappear, a good idea if you don't want to get up at the crack of dawn!
Overall the hotel was lovely, however the hotel is below street level and is accessed by very steep steps, I could mange it but anyone with any type of walking difficulites would find it very hard indeed, coming home at night I would take off my dressy shoes, in case I would fall. I don't think travel agents emphasis this as we saw some older people struggling to get up and down.
However besides that I would recommend the hotel, Taormina itself is lovely but expensive. For everyday items, water, soft drinks, go to Mamma Mias deli, out of the hotel first turn on the right, right hand side, this was the most reasonable place for everyday items and had lovely deli food, beware the shops by the Greek theatre, can of sprite €1.80.
Overall it is a lovely place ideal for relaxing, honeymoon etc and I would return.
decor
from GracieOffalyThere is a lovely restaurant / bar beside the pool and the whole area is kept very clean & tidy.
The restaurant and bar were never very busy, however we were disappointed when we only tried the restaurant on the night before we left as the menu is fantastic providing a number of choices for everyone.
The hotel is centrally located in comparison to a number of other ones of this rating. There is a climb of approx 40 steps to the main street but its bearable considering you'll probably be getting little else exercise for the duration of your stay.
Top Local Tips for Taormina
Busy, busy, busy... We stayed in Sicily from the middle of August for two weeks and happened to hit the exact period when the Sicilian's take their time off from work. This causes slight problems as it means restaurants get alot busier - meaning limited avalibility and also the roads are hurrendous with car overload and driving should be avoided if you are a tourist. However, when going at this time the weather is almost garaunteed to be great and the business does mean there is no lack of atmosphere.
Accessing hotel Make sure your taxi goes to hotel door - if not get them to alert hotel staff to carry bags.
Location Stay in Toarmina itself if possible not just close. Hire cars difficult to achieve in Taormina, we needed to hire one from the Airport
