Top Local Tips for Palermo

Extra charges and traffic Although the holiday was 'all inclusive', we were told there were very high first damage charges and therefore were obliged to pay a further €140 insurance. I thoroughly dislike this last minute hidden blackmail! The traffic is intense in Palermo, with many one way streets and it is generally poorly signed for out of town destinations. A portable GPS became very useful. Although crowded, the drivers are not aggressive despite much use of their car horns. We were once hassled by two youths trying to stop our car with theirs; this was on the way to Agrigento. We did not discover their exact purpose as we kept driving on. It was not enjoyable but the Valle dei Templi was worth it!

Safety We were concerned about some things that we had read about the high crime rate, but so long as you use common sense, and carry your money and valuables in a underclothes belt or pouch, you'll be fine.Some parts of the city are threatening after dark, and you can generally tell from the look of the neighborhood where not to go. Overall, we had a great time there!!!
