Historical Traveller Reviews of Alpha Hotel
Not sure why this is a 4 star hotel. California, USA
from lemoncelloAbout the rooms, the bedspread smelled so nasty we had to put it out on the balcony for the 2 nights we stayed there. The towels also smelled disgusting. The walls are about 3 inches thick so you can here every phone ring, door buzz{ the door buzzes really loudly when you put your key in},and every vespa go by.When we went to breakfast the maids cleaned our rooms even though we had our do not disturb signs on the doors.
The door to the bathroom is a sliding door and it got stuck and we had to call some one to open it.The people there are not friendly in the least. This hotel is not up to American standards. Sorry if that sounds snobby, but it's true! Stay somewhere in Sorrento!
Lovely Hoilday
from MrsBondThe Breakfasts were plentiful with lovely fresh fruit every day, pastries, cereals, breads, cheeses, meats.
Its about a 5 minute journey on the Circemvesuviana to Sorrento for 1 euro each way. We actually preferred being a bit out of the way.
I have to mention a restaurant in Sant'Agnello-Ristorante di Pepino. Its a family run restaurant and the food is fab! We went there 3 times, twice for dinner and once for lunch and we were not disappointed.
We would definitely return.
Very enjoyable stay at the Alpha hotel
from Ray_FallonLocation: 300m from the Circumvesuviana local area train network. It's not downtown Sorrento as some expect, but it's 2 minutes (literally) on the train which runs every 30 minutes and costs €1 each way. It's about 30-40 minutes walk, although we didn't walk. Why bother when it's that easy on train. It’s on the corner of two busy enough roads, but from what we saw, so also are most hotels.
External Presentation: The actual building is not particularly attractive, but there is a nice mature garden at the front of the hotel, so the actual building is not really in view unless you are at the pool. The pools themselves are nice; a circular toddlers pool and a 10m pool (approx.)
Rooms: The rooms are typically decorated – white & minimal, but pleasant. Nice bathroom and balcony. Floors are tiles. Bed linen is clean and comfortable. Furniture is quaint. Rooms are not large, but adequate. A/C available from June-August, I understand.
Breakfast: Typical continental European style. Selection of 3 cereals, 3 types of bread which was nice, fruit (fabulous cherries!), ham, salami, cheese, etc. Waiters offered tea or coffee and a choice of fried or scrambled egg.
Lunch: We only had lunch twice. Adequate and reasonable.
Dinner: This was the high point of the hotel. The food was excellent. The well-trained waiters were on hand to welcome guests. There was a choice of about 5 starters, main courses and about 4 deserts. A selection of salads was also available. They had two special evenings. The first was a gala dinner with no choice of food, but it was served with fanfare. The second special evening was excellent – a presentation of three starters, four types of fish and desert. Very good! The staff were flexible for customers who didn’t want the fixed choices. Another nice tip: they recorked your wine and mineral water for the following evening if you didn’t finish it! Wine was good value. Well-done!!
Service: Service was excellent. Staff took care of everything professionally. Internet access available for €3/30min on a computer near the lobby.
Overall: We were very pleased with our stay at the hotel. Dinner was the star attraction.
Hope this helps those who come along afterwards.
FAR BETTER THAN EXPECTED
from A TripAdvisor MemberLovely Place
from A TripAdvisor MemberIt is not centrally located but that was perfect for me because I was recovering from travelling through the previous night.
Beautiful pool, views from the balconies of the sea.
I wouldnt eat in the restaurant if youre looking to save money!
If that doesnt bother you stroll down to the Terrace Restaurant...a sort of terraced balcony over the steep cliffs that drop the sea. Expensive but eccelente club sandwiches!
Better than expected
from A TripAdvisor MemberIf we are able to return to Sorrento, we would diffenitley go back to the Hotel Alpha, only this time stay longer. One other thing, they do have a parking garage if you have a car. but charge 10 euro per night. Their are places on the street to park if you can find one. It did seem like a very safe area.
Thank full travelers from Oregon, USA
Pleasant Enough: Good for tour groups
from pokissimoLocation:
------
As expected, outside the main town of Sorrento: Close to the train station to
get into Sorrento itself easily, and a bit quieter than staying in the bustle of sorrento itself.
Rooms:
-----
Room was large, slightly sparsely decorated, but comfortable. Air conditioning struggled
to get temp below 25 degrees at night after a hot day, so sometimes felt a little warm at
night.
Food:
----
Breakfast was mediocre: I'd rather have 1 or 2 *good* breakfast rolls / croissants than
an infinite number of hard and slightly stale ones. Unfortunately, only the latter was available.
Juices seemed cheap and too sweet.
Food at Dinner was good the one time we ate at the hotel.
Staff:
----
Front desk staff were helpful in the main and friendly: After a small mix-up with our booking,
resulting in us having to wait in the lobby for 45 minutes on check in, everything else ran
smoothly.
Did get the feeling, though, that as this hotel is popular with Package Tour groups
(TUI / Thomas Cook et.c.) that you are felt to be "just another tour-group" member, even if
travelling independently.
Overall:
------
Not a bad place to stay: Probably not the best choice if you are travelling independently and
want to be treated thus.
Stay somewhere else nearer Sorrento
from A TripAdvisor MemberHotel Alpha
from rob1908Upon arrival we were concerned that it was on a busy main road, but having looked around many of the hotels in this area are. However, the noise was not noticable after the first day with the help from the double glazed patio doors in the room.
The rooms were basic, but comfortable with maid service daily which included fresh towels. The air conditioning only seemed to work in the evenings. You can hire an empty fridge at extra cost for your room - however if you choose to hire the fridge fully stocked you just pay for what you drink, which is much cheaper! There are safety deposit boxes in the room to hire for 4 euros a day.
The reception staff are very helpful, you can buy bus tickets for 1 euro at reception, and change currency at 2 euros for each travellers cheque! There is a bus stop outside of the hotel, with Linea C getting you into Sorrento. You can also take the train, the station is approx. 5 mins from the hotel in St Agnello centre. This is a very good service which also goes to Napoli - you can take this to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum.
In St. Agnello there are a few bars, restaurants and mini-markets which are handy.
Turning to the food at the hotel, the quality and choice was excellent. Once a week they have a gala dinner, and have entertainment laid on 3 or 4 evenings a week. The breakfast is buffet style and basic continental but includes plenty of fresh fruit and breads.
The waiting staff, both at breakfast and dinner were charming and friendly speaking fluent english.
All in all a comfortable welcoming hotel which is excellent value compared to some of the hotels in the centre of Sorrento.
Ps. if you want a great view of the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius visit the Foreigners Club which is off Corso Italia in Sorrento.
Had a great time!
from LincolnshireGeojenThe location was not a disappointment, as I had chosen to read the brochure before leaving and therefore knew it was not in 'Sorrento proper'. The pool area is close to a road and on the first day we did notice some traffic noise. However this lessened during siesta time and was most noticeable during the rush hours. However after the first day, it was really not a big deal and we hardly heard it.
The pool was lovely and clean and there was a shallow pool that was great to read in! The sunbeds were good with built in shades, however they were at a premium, so you needed to grab one early! My one moan was a rule that only drinks bought from the hotel could be drunk around the pool. This could work out to be expensive especially if you like to drink lots of water.
The food was outstanding! There was an enormous variety and we enjoyed a wide selection of dishes. The portions were huge and after a superb contential buffet breakfast there was little need for lunch. However the little supermarket (2 mins away) sold snacks, water and ice cream if you wanted a light bite. The waiting staff were fab. The service was quick and professional. The Matre 'D was a character and we found him jovial and friendly, although he liked to joke with the guests.
We went into Sorrento several times and found the buses very efficient. You can buy bus tickets from reception. We went on several excursions through our tour operator, Thomson.
On the whole this was a great base and suited us. We had a relaxing time and enjoyed the facilities. We chose to eat in the hotel most nights, so felt little need to head into Sorrento to eat out. We would stay at the hotel again and would recommend it, as a good value and enjoyable place to stay. No, it not the Hilton - nor does it claim to be.
Top Local Tips for Sant Agnello
The view When you step out of the hotel turn right. Follow the road for 5 mins (don't turn off it) until you come to a terrace opposite the Mediterranean Hotel. There is a cafe here which sells ice-creams, drinks etc and has spectacular views from the terrace across the Bay of Naples towards Vesuvius and down to Sorrento.
Timetables Check bus times at the bus stop rather than on the wall of the hotel. There is a discrepency which can be quite annoying. Also, note that all boats leave from the Marina Piccolo. It's a bit of a scary steep walk down, but joyfully the bus from outside the hotel goes directly there.... lastly, advice in summer, travel early and snooze in the afternoons. There's no air con on the trains and the buses.
SORRENTO CENTRE IS EXPENSIVE! keep to area of st agnello lovely people not touristville and do not rip you off like sorrento centre 8e a beer but 3 or4 near our hotel
