Top Local Tips for San Gimignano

where I ate and people that helped us San Gimignano: This is the walled town that is closest to Hotel. We went there some about four days out of seven. It has a very good feel to it, and I’ll recommend some places we went to. http://www.sangimignano.com/sghomei.htm Wineland – Via XX Settembre, 3 Owner: Maria www.wineland.com She is very personable, and will steer you right on all things in the town and all wines she sells. The internet site is going to change, so link may not work as soon as next month. You will not be scared of any Tuscan wine after you finish tasting with her. Tratoria Chiribiri: http://www.sangimignano.com/chiribiri/indexe.htm Very active and personable waitress. Bustling kitchen visible. Close seating, and I at the stuffed rabbit! Be brave and order stuff you don’t know. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Just inside San Giovanni's gate. Il Rigoletto – NOT recommended. Just south of San Giovanni's gate. They didn’t offer us water after 10 minutes, and seated us in the sun, when ample tables in the shade were available. I think English speaking tourists will be better served elsewhere. Nuff said. Volterra: Ristorante il pozzo degli etruschi Via delle Prigioni 28/30 tel 0588 80608 Paul Caciagli “ The Man” Very nice service, they opened early for us so I wouldn’t have to drive back to pancole in the dark. We enjoyed their set meal of the day, but there were lots of tempting entrees. Florence: Di Sasso di Dante Piazza delle Pallottole 6 (by the back of the Duomo) 055 282 113 Eat where Dante used to bowl Bocce. Agriturismo: Fattoria di Fugnano http://www.fattoriadifugnano.com/fattoria_ing.htm We bought Laura’s wine one day, and I was so impressed with its quality, flavor and aroma, when I saw the little road sign announcing the Farm, I made the snap decision to visit the place. My patron Saint, San Serendipity smiled on me and we stumbled on perhaps the finest view of San Gimignano around. There was a private conference going on, yet they found time to visit with us. They gave us more wine to taste than I deserved, and answered our questions and put up with my foolishness with grace and sincere Italian hospitality that probably has a special Italian word, but I don’t know it. We visited again the next day for bottling day, and again, as busy as they were, Laura found time to help us and provide hospitality. Check out this picture: http://www.fattoriadifugnano.com/immagini/vini_sx.jpg The views in daytime were just as magical. If the Farm Holiday is your thing, take a look at this place. I didn’t stay there, but I fell in love with the people.

Tip about San Gimignano San Gimignano closes early... dont go up there expecting to shop before you chose a restaurant, its all closed by 7pm. And wear flat shoes, no heels ! Its cobbled streets and steep hills. Watch your bill in the restaurants... we had drinks added on that we never had as did a few other couples that were on holiday with us.

Outside San Gimignano For hotels within San Gimignano, you have to park on the outside of the walls and then haul your suitcases up into town. Hotel LeRenaie is a good alternative. It's out in the country with parking next to the hotel. Stay there, and then drive into San Gimi EARLY in the day, before the tour busses arrive and you'll be able to enjoy San Gimi without the hassle.
