Stay only two nights

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel is adequte for short stays. The decor in the rooms are very basic and although we paid the extra 20 euros as was suggested in numerous reviews all we got was a damp & musty smell. The room were very clean and the staff were helpful but not always friendly. Speaking Italian would probably come in handy as we were treated with a mild disdain. There is not much to do in San Gimigiano once the shops are closed so two days is probably more than enough. Beware if you want to shorten your stay as you are required to give 36 hours notice or you will be charged for your room unless they are able to resell it. We thought it was over priced for what it was

Didn't really like this hotel and would not agree with rave reviews on this site. Room large but not v. clean. Breakfast very basic and grumpy service.

Nice Hotel, Nice People

from Toomuchtrav
Stayed at this hotel for 3 days. Had two rooms - my wife and I were traveling with a friend. We will definitely stay again. This is exactly what it portrays itself to be - a moderate priced hotel with beautiful rooms in a great location. The bonus is that the people are especially nice and helpful.

As you would expect, there are a large variety of rooms and sizes. Unless you are on a tight budget - spend a little more, and you will get a much larger room. Twenty euros can make a big difference. Also, if you are a light and late sleeper, you are better off on the rooms that do not face the street - there are plenty of city noises at 7:00 AM as businesses are supplied prior to the tourists entering the city. We didn't hear a sound on the inner rooms, but it bothered our friend who was on the street.

Breakfast was very pleasant on the inner courtyard. We really enjoyed being in the open air for it.

Back to the staff. Just have to note again how helpful, kind, etc. they were. Helped one traveler who had just had an accident work with the car rental agency. Helped me with Internet access (which worked great). Made a big difference.

Very nice hotel

from Yfandes
We spent a week in San Gimignano, doing day trips into various parts of Tuscany. The hotel was nice. The room was clean and a good size, and the three of us had comortable beds. The hotel staff was generally helpful in directing us to good restaurants and things to do. We tried the laundry service and found it extremely expensive and not nearly as fast as promised. We expected the clothes back in 24 hours, and it took 3 days. But, they did come back clean and very well pressed. The shuttle service that the town provides makes having a car fairly easy, even though you can't bring the car into the walled part of the city. We parked at one of the parking lots and took the shuttle back and forth (runs every half hour) and it was fairly easy. The hotel is across the street from one of the shuttle stops, as well as the place where you can buy bus tickets, so that was very helpful too. The town is easy to get around in and lovely to see. It's much more fun there mid-week and in the evenings when there are fewer tourists swarming the place. The restaurants were, as a whole, quite good.

Wonderful hotel to start our holiday

from nevertooold
We were fortunate enough to begin our 18 - day vacation at this wonderfully - located hotel which is about a 2 short block walk from one of the 2 main gate entrances.

Although the room was certainly not of the large variety, it was ideal for our purposes with a comfortable double-sized bed, and a more than adequate-sized washroom. As well, the third-floor roof-top view was pleasant.

The breakfast buffet was comprised of various meats, cheeses, and fruits and the coffee was delicious.

The staff ( both the day-time and late night receptionists as well as the young woman who assisted at breakfast) was most considerate and accomodating. When I learned that I had inadvertently left my camera on our Air France flight to Florence, the gentleman at the front desk (whose name I unfortunately failed to note) assisted greatly in providing various telephone numbers which helped me in finally locating the camera. As well, he provided the perfect restaurant recommendation (Le Vecchie Mura - have the minnestrone soup and the veal with mushroom sauce!) for our first evening in Italy.

All in all, a wonderful hotel in a wonderful town.

Warning: notwithstanding that the town itself can be magical, try to heed the various warnings put forth by a number of guide books. The town is absolutely wonderful between 6:00 pm in the evening and 11:00am the next morning. At any other time, the hordes of tourists and school trips do make it seem like Disneyworld over the Christmas holidays, and should be avoided if possible!

Great Hotel

from JMB
We stayed at L'Antico Pozzo for one night in May 2005. The street the hotel is on is beautiful and lively during the day. At night it is so serene and calm, one almost feels transported back in time.

The hotel is very clean and well appointed. Our room was very nice and quiet, with a view over a small olive grove and a small part of the ramparts. The bathroom was the nicest one I came across in our two week trip!

The breakfast was very good, with more choices than one normally sees in the standard Italian buffet.

We did have a small problem finding the hotel within the town. It was quite difficult to drive within the town, so it was fairly inconvenient to have to circle a couple of times.

Now that I know where it is, I would definitely stay here again.

A great spot in the middle of San Gimignano

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I just returned from a trip through Italy and were lucky to have found L'Antico Pozzo. It is a charming little inn located in the heart of San Gimignano. We couldn't have asked for a better location and the service was good as well. The standard rooms, although not overly luxurious, are nicely appointed with antique furnishings and hand-painted walls/ceilings. All areas were very well maintained and a nice continental-style breakfast is included. L'Antico Pozzo is a great spot if you're looking for a reasonably priced, nicely appointed small inn in a perfect location!

Great Hotel in a Wonderful Location

from ruthinajijic
The room was large and had plenty of extra pillows and amenities (though the hot and cold fawcetts on the bathroom sink were reversed). Room overlooked main street of San Gimignano which was noisy but quieted down around midnight--not sure if it's more of an issue in the high season (we were there in late October).

Antico Pozzo

Every summer that I go to Italy, and this summer was no exception, my family, friends and I stay in the L'Antico Pozzo in San Gimignano. It is a lovely and inexpensive hotel in the center of San Gimignano. The rooms are clean and decorated beautifully. The breakfasts are substantial, something besides bread and orange drink which most of Italian hotels serve. It was originally a palace and the owners managed to keep that ambiance. The original well and frescos are maintained for guests to admire. The people at the desk are friendly, helpful, and kind to Americans. San Gimignano is just 20 minutes from Sienna and 35 minutes from Florence and in the center of beautiful Tuscany. The town is opened most of the time, unlike other small towns. San Gimignano has operas in the square, some of the best restaurant around the area, a breath taking view, shops galore and a movie theater on the very top. I would suggest this hotel to anyone traveling to Italy. I will always stay there.

Loved the experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
San Gimignano is magnificent and the Hotel L'Antico Pozzo was a pleasure. Our room overlooked the lovely cobblestoned main street and was surprisingly spacious compared to our hotel rooms in the major Italian cities. Our companions' room was in back of the hotel (a bit quieter) and had a more pastoral view. You might want to specify whether you prefer a front or back location. Enjoy!

Top Local Tips for San Gimignano

Parking Cheaper to stay just outside San G and you would have no parking fees

Restaurants Follow the suggestions that the hotel gives and you won't go wrong. It can be a bit pricey however well worth the money for top quality food and vino.

Medieval Torture Museum While in San Gimignano, don't miss the Medieval Torture Musuem. It was really interesting and only a 5-10 minute walk from Hotel L'Antico Pozzo. It cost EUR 8 and is open from 10:00 to 19:00 (I think 19:00). It has several translations available for each exhibit and the museum is quite extensive and educational. My aunt and I really like it!
