This was an excellent hotel ... not perfect though. The staff were a little stuffy and it wasn't in the most central of locations. Still an exceptional experience, great rooms and amenities.

Its sister hotel, the St. Regis Grand was even better!

Definitely 5 Star

Can't fault this hotel - stayed 1 week from 20/11/2004 for our anniversary.
Top floor room with balcony overlooking Via Veneto & St. Peters in the distance. First night St. Peters was floodlit with the moon sitting just above it. Complimentary wine & chocolates on arrival, Champagne a few days later on our anniversary. Swim every evening before apperitivo in the bar. The staff were always friendly - never hovering for a tip!
Restaurant v. good although expensive but loads to choose from in the area (try the back streets behind the hotel....)

Excelsior was Excellent !

from A TripAdvisor Member
Talk about location !! Excelsior couldn't have been better ! Walked to Spanish steps and was pleased we were on the up-side !! Walked to cafes, restaurants, shops, many excellent ones right in the area. About a $5.00 Euro cab ride from everything else ! Hotel staff fun and nice, was up-graded to a suite because of Starwood affiliation, and had a huge sitting area, a corner room, 3 sets of windows, a separate bedroom, most comfortable "heavenly" beds, huge bathroom, towel warmers...can I go on ! I would definately stay there again, the Via Veneto is the place to be !

A wonderful stay

The Excelsior is a beautiful hotel in an amazing location. From there, we walked to the Spanish Steps, the Coliseum, and even St. Peter's. The rooms are smaller than American standards (I understand that's not unusual), but very nice regardless. The service was exceedingly helpful and friendly. I rate it as a 4 and not a 5 only because there was a construction crew working on the Via Marche about four floors below us, and their racket woke us at 7:30 to 8:00 every morning. I would definitely return, but I have to build up my life savings again first.

No problems with service for us!

Just back from a 2 week trip all around Europe, and I have to say that we enjoyed our stay at this hotel the most of all the places that we stayed. The staff was friendly. The rooms were just as nice as expected, and the bathrooms were fabulous. I never wanted to get out of the extremely comfortable bathtub, and the beds were truly heavenly. Definitely hope to stay here again.

5 star all the way!

Beautiful rooms! Centrally located, easy walk from the train station. The two dining options could be better; sit outside if possible. Would certainly recommend!

Hotel is stunning, Service is abhorrent!

from dsanmarco
I stayed at the Westin Excelsior Rome 10/3-10/5. My room was beautiful, however, the service at the hotel was abhorrent. From check-in, until check-out, virtually every member of the staff I had contact with was extremely rude. I had an article about an osteria in Rome that was rated very highly. I called the concierge and asked if they could get the number for me since there was no phone book in the room. They told me I had to call they operator. When I called the operator, I was told I had to walk down to the business center to look it up myself. That is certainly not the standard of service I have come to expect from 5* hotels. When I return to Rome, this hotel will definitely *not* be on my itinerary.

First Class service, centrally located

from sazer01
Highly recommend the Westin Excelsior on Via Veneto, centrally located in Rome. At this hotel you are within walking distance of the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, and numerous shops and cafes along Via Veneto. The Metro station is a short 5 minute walk away. Easy subway ride to Coloseum, the Forum, etc. Rooms were spectacular. I was upgraded as a Starwood Platinum member to a large suite on the second floor, overlooking the US Embassy. The bed and bath were heavenly, of course. The room(s) were literally close to 800 square feet, if not bigger. Concierge service was impeccable. All requests to the room (electrical adapters, towels, ice) were handled within minutes. Got a bowl of fruit on arrival, perfectly ripe, and a gorgeous arrangement of fresh flowers. Note, very few of the fine hotels in Italy provide irons. If you are bringing clothes that will need to be touched up, either bring your own travel iron and adapter, or expect to pay $10-20 per item to have it steamed for you. Also, don't know why but all the Italian Westins water down their conditioner! Wish I brought my own from home. I would stay at this hotel again in a heartbeat, probably the nicest room of all the Italian Starwood hotels I've been to.

We will stay here again!

My husband and I have a rule to never skimp on hotels. For work and pleasure, we try to stay at Westin's whenever possible because they seldom disappoint. The Westin Excelsior was magnificent. Our room was huge with a marble bathroom and separate shower and bathtub (anyone accustomed to traveling in Europe knows that can be a rarity). Plush velvet drapes and an oversized king bed. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The location was perfect - walking distance to the Spanish Steps and metro, as well as Borghese park. The hotel is across the street from the American Embassy on the posh Via Veneto. We were able to check in at 9:00 a.m. and sleep off our jet lag - thank goodness! The price was a bit steep (more than you would pay for a comparable hotel in any big U.S. city. $8.00 for a can of Pringles), but it was worth it. We plan on staying there again on our return trip.

Great Location!

from Billiebob
We enjoyed this hotel. Our room was very nice! A nice large room and a very large modern bathroom. We enjoyed a fantastic breakfast buffet every morning. We liked the location - close to the spanish steps and Berini Square. We enjoyed cappacino across the street at the Paris cafe along with many desserts. My only disappointment was the concierge. We didn't need them but I did not think the concierge was very friendly or helpful (at least the man I talked with). The man at the check-in desk was very friendly and helpful and courteous. We would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Top Local Tips for Rome

Beware your personal belongings on the metro Pickpockets got me, though only about 30 euros. The trains get crowded and bodies are very close. Wallet was in my front pocket and still got picked.

Vatican sponsored tours The Vatican offers a guided tour of their museums and the Sistine Chapel. This is the only official tour and the only one that allows you to skip the line to buy tickets. (You still have to buy them, but after you've joined the tour guide and there's no line. However, the only way to get reservations is by fax and no further than 30 days in advance. Check the Vatican website for more data.

Subway and taxis. Taxis are not easy to get at night, so keep the number to a couple of taxi companies with you, if you venture off the beaten path. The subway is easy to use, and is very cheap to use (1 Euro for 1 hour of travel.).
