Top Local Tips for Rome

Don't be ripped off! Always ask the price of drinks before you sit down in the cafes. We were charged 18euros for 3 diet cokes! Never sat in a cafe and ordered again without asking for a menu/ price!

Inexpensive transportation From the airport, take the "white taxi". It is only 40 eu (flat fee) anywhere within the city walls. Make good use of the Metro, it takes you anywhere you want to go and doesn't cost a lot. In fact, if you are going to be stopping at several sites, buy a 24 hr. pass. Saves a bunch of money.

Roma Pass & Leonard Express train to Fiumincello Airport The Roma Pass was great for us. We used it to get into several sites without waiting in line (including Colisseum) and on the metro as well. We regret we did not take the time to learn the bus system because the Metro does not cover a significant portion of the walk from Ancient Rome to Trevi. (New Line C being built should solve that --when?) We could have had more energy for night time prowling had our legs not been numbed by walking where there was no Metro!!! Before you spend 45 Euros for a shuttle to the airport, consider whether your bags could go on the express train--Leonardo Express taht runs every 30 minutes from the airport at Fiumcino to Termini and return. It was 9 Euro each way!! Significatn savings if you can schlepp the bags. We paid to store ours at Termini overnight when we got off the ship en route to our hotel and picked them up next day en route to airport on Express. The baggage drop off is located right where the Express comes in!! Not too busy midday.
