TAXI DRIVER SCAM Virtual every taxi driver will try to scam you in some way. By far the most popular (& lucrative!) is to pick up a new arrival in town,drop you at your destination & charge you some exorbitant fare for the pleasure. When you've handed over the money you instinctively look down to retrieve you bags from the pavement & at that point your charming & helpful driver will quickly swap one note with another (Eg,you give him a 20 & a 5 & he'll swap the 20 with a 5 & claim you gave him two 5's by mistake!) This has happened to me on EVERY occasion I've been to Rome.It's a regular & widespread scam. My advice would be to either count the money into your partner's hand & let him see that 2 pairs of eyes are watching or just be adamant that there was no mistake! They ALWAYS back down once they realise they've been rumbled! PLEASE DON'T LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT!!
February was perfect! We went to Rome in February and thought it was a perfect time to go. The weather was nice (55-50 degrees fahrenheit) and the crowds were not overwhelming. It didn't hurt that prices were cheaper for almost everything. Will definitely go back in February again.
