male staff horrible

this hotel is in an excellent location, within walking distance to the vatican. about 20 minutes walking from rome center. the breakfast buffet is fine with the exact same food every day. the rooms are fine. when we first arrived we stayed in a suite they converted into a two bedroom which we really appreciated. I traveled with my sister and her two teenage daughters. we had to check out for three days for a side trip to sorrento and when we checked back in, we were put in a one room closet. i could not even fit sitting in the bathtub. the male clerks at check in are chauvinist pigs. very condescending and always acted irritated to help you in any way. the male customers were not treated this way. one man in particular was so unpleasant we actually checked out three days early and stayed at another hotel.the hotel bar is very expensive 10 euro's per drink, drink and eat dinner anywhere else. there are many small cafes within walking distance and you are treated way better. i personally would NEVER stay there again. the male clerk made our stay very, very unpleasant.

My sisters and i stayed with you for 3 nights at the end of march. We had a very good welcome from the staff and the rooms were very good. We had clean towels and bathroom soaps etc every day as well as new sheets. The food was very good and the staff were very courteous and as we had one of us celebrating a birthday we were treated very well. Location is excellent for the vatican and museum , overall we had a good time and would recommend this to other travellers.

Room was clean and a good size. Food & drink expensive in Hotel so eat out! Loads of places within 5 minute walk. Great location for Vatican & St Peters & make sure you go to the top of the dome, its awesome. Get a Roma Pass for 20 Euro and travel for free on the public transport plus free and discounted entry to loads of places. Take the 64 bus from the corner to Piazza Venezia and you can walk to most places from there if don't like bus hopping. Book guided tours to jump the long line its worth it.

Hotel was excellent in all categories. Rooms were exceptionally clean and very large by Rome standards. Location next door to the Vatican and many eateries close by. Staff was extremely helpful to all our requests for assistance (especially with lost luggage!). Guisseppe was a life-saver. Will stay at this hotel again many times over without hesitation.
Would stay here again

We stayed at the Michelangelo for 3 nights. The location is great, walking distance to St Peter's. The price was reasonable for Rome. The staff was very courteous and helpful. We did not try the resturant, since it seemed high priced, but there were places to eat nearby. The room was a nice size and if you stretched your neck out the window you see the dome of St Peter's. Highly recommend this hotel.

My daughter 34, myself 57 and my 3 year old grandson were admirably catered for at this hotel. Three single beds were not a problem and the staff could not have been more helpful. The room was spacious and the bathroom clean and bright. An excellent buffet breakfast was included in the price.
Very nice!

The hotel Michelangelo, Rome is very close to the Vatican and some great shopping. The hotel itself is very luxurious and for the price we were very impressed. We had a bit of a wait to book in but all was well in the end. Reccomended A1.

This hotel was nice and within a five minute walk to Vatican Square. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was average size for Italy. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom large for Italian standards. The breakfast was very nice.

Pleasant stay June 23-27, 2004

from Suuske
We have booked this hotel (in Orvieto, also a great place to visit!) for the first time through Expedia, so we did not know what to expect. Walking in the direction of Vatican City and looking at the outside of the hotel, our first impression was:" this is it ?"
Entering the hotel, everything was well organised, everyone very friendly, rooms and bathroom ok. The breakfastbuffet was ok, if you want to have dinner there, very expensive. We suggest to take a walk into the area near Piazza Navona (15 min. walk) to look for nice restaurant. (there are plenty !) We felt very safe walking back to our hotel,, after taking a breathtaking moment of the St. Peter's square at night ! If we ever come back to Roma, we would definitely book the same hotel !

Parts of it are good.

from Sean_of_London
A three-star hotel masquerading as a four-star. Good for Vatican, but a long, hot bus-ride into the city centre. After five days we were grateful to have a non-hotel breakfast.
Staff, 'thou, very helpful and professional.

Nice Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
First I want to make it clear, I did not stay in the Starhotel Michelangelo, but I did have reservations to stay here so I checked it out before I stayed. When I arrived I found the staff very helpful and when I asked to tour the type of room I had reserved a bell-man quickly escorted me upstairs to show what the hotel had to offer. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean and were quite spacious. We didn't end up staying there because we had a wonderful time staying at the Franklin Feel the Sound a few days before, and the Starhotel is very much a big, typical hotel with long corridors. We were looking for a different experience on our Rome trip and the Franklin Hotel is quite small (only 4 rooms per floor) and cozy. Also we toured the Starhotel at night and the streets were very much deserted. It didn't feel very safe. If the Vatican is your primary reason for being in Rome the Starhotel is just a 5 minute walk and I'm sure there would be more people around during the daytime when the Vatican Museums are open.

Good Value City-Break Hotel

from inspireman
Stayed 3 nights (April 2004) and was pleasently surprised, given previous mixed reviews. Close to Vatican and trips to central sites no problem with excellent bus service. Hotel good value, rooms clean and well kept and staff polite. Breakfast also good and varied. Would use again.

Disappointing room and rude service, but great location in Vatican City

from A TripAdvisor Member
I travel frequently, and do not consider myself particularly picky about movies, foods, hotels, etc - but I do desire friendly, polite service. We stayed at this Starhotel for one night after spending 4 nights in marvelous hotels in Sorrento and Capri, so perhaps we were just expecting more. Irregardless, my experience was not what I would expect or desire from any hotel, let alone a 4-star property. After check-in, I waited at the desk to ask a few questions about the hotel and area of the gentleman (?) working there. In the midst of my second question, he turned away from me and began to help another guest, even picking up the phone to make a phone call. My friend and I were both extremely taken aback, but I remained standing there, waiting for him to finish, and asked a second question - which he answered very curtly. I was nearly in tears, I felt so put-off by his treatment. On top of this, our room was mediocre, with wallpaper peeling in places; though the bathroom was nice and modern. The location with respect to the Vatican can't be beat, though. Irregardless, I would not stay here again.

loved it

from UkTraveller
After reading previous comments I was a bit worried about my choice of hotel.... It was fabulous the room was huge along with the bath (the only downside there was no tea or coffee facilities in our room - but a well stocked mini bar instead) we had a view of St Peters all the staff were very helpful and made us feel most welcome. The breakfast was varied for all tastes. The hotel decor was fine We never saw any wallpaper hanging off as a previous person had mentioned. Right next to the vatican it was a great base.. Would I stay there again, MOST DEFINATELY.

good service, ideal location for Vatican area

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel is ideal for visiting the Vatican area (including a view on San Pïetro from the balcony), but of course if you want to visit others tourist highlights of the city, you're in for longer walks, although distances are not that big if you just consider the historic center, and anyway you can use one of the many (cheap) busesthere are some fair pizzeria's and we found the Taverna Angelica in the neighbourhood a very good restaurant (to get to other places in the evening you can get cash & a taxi at piazza Risorgimento); to get there from the airport is very easy, the station San Pietro is less than 5 minutes walking from the hotelwe found the personnel at the desk very friendly and willing to help, compared to average Italians, the hotel isn't really a Rennaissance beauty, but it provides all comfort and is as clean as one would expect from this price range, and the breakfast buffet is very ok indeedso, all things considered, if you're willing to do a minimum effort to visit a city (who isn't?), this hotel is very fine

Elegant and affordable hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is very much a 4 star hotel. Large rooms that are elegantly and cleanly appointed. The bathroom was very nice, with a large tub. Within walking distance of everything in Rome (although literally right next to Vatican, which is a plus, given that it is important to get there as early as possible to avoid the herds of tour groups). The service was outstanding (the front desk remembered our names each time we walked by). The breakfast was a mixed bag - lots of options, but the quality of the cooked food was sub-par (i.e. the eggs were extremely runny).
Free internet in the lobby was particularly useful (i.e. for visiting places like the Villa Borghese, you will need to make a reservation, which we did online in the hotel). Overall, outstanding time there!

Good only for its walking distance to Vatican

from A TripAdvisor Member
Unless you are getting a good price and are going here because you are going to attending events at the Vatican, I would never recommend this hotel. The desk help is rude, as is the help in the dining room. There is no easy access to anything except by very expensive cab. The hotel desk is useless in giving directions to anything. Beds are like concrete slabs.

A Good Deal

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel was perfect for the price. The lobby and common areas of the hotel are very nice, and the breakfast buffet was good as well. It's on the doorstep of St. Peter's and about a 10 minute walk from the nearest Metro station, and then a 10 minute ride to central Rome. The staff were helpful. The room was clean, though some wallpaper was peeling off the wall. The bed wasn't very comfortable, but after a long day walking around Rome, it was good enough. It's a good choice for someone who wants a clean, safe, quiet, friendly hotel, but doesn't want to pay a ridiculous price.

Top Local Tips for Rome

Restaurant Dolce Vita, Piazza Navona Restaurant Dolce Vita is an outstanding place to eat, with a fantastic menu of excellent food and fine wine. Its location - right on Piazza Navona is wonderful - as you can sit outside all-year-round. It is not over-priced, and if you count the quality of the food and its great location, it makes it very good value.

Take the taxi, avoid the limo service from FCO Avoid the limo counter at the airport. We were approached and offer a 1-way 90 Euro with different return trip (63/50/35) fare. It turns out, we overpaid for about 25 Euros. The Italian Tourist desk is no help with limited English. You can get a taxi for 40 for most of the hotels within the wall.

Not quite how i remember it Everyone wants your money, blink for one second and someone will have hold of your wife or girlfreind and be halfway through a sales pitch of some useless garment while your head spins! Watch your wallet!
