Historical Traveller Reviews of Star Hotel Metropole
Overall Great Stay
from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed here in late April. When we checked in they told us our room wasn't ready and finally when it was they put us in a room that literally was in a construction zone - I know Euro hotels are loud, but this was like someone was banging on our pipes and jack hammering our walls. We called front desk and they ended up putting us in a LOVELY junior suite. The windo opened up onto a courtyard, the breakfast buffet was great, and the hotel was in a great location. So over all a wonderful stay - just DON'T let them try and put you in room 101!!!
Brilliant hotel!

My husband and I spent 4 nights at the Metropole Hotel Rome in May 2004. It was really central and when the receptionist spotted on arrival that it was my 50th birthday he upgraded us to a suite with a lounge and whirlpool bath---bliss after a long hot walk after we mistakenly took a wrong turn when walking from the station. In fact the hotel was only 5 minutes walk from the station but just far enough away not to be affected by some of the slightly unsavoury characters you always find near stations in any capital city. The room was lovely, the breakfast was good and the staff were very helpful and most spoke very good English. I have to say that nothing was too much trouble for them. We would definitely stay there again even without the room upgrade.
Excellent service

The Starhotel Metropole is perfectly located just a few mins from the Termini Train Station. Also close to the metro station that goes direct to the Vatican and Spanish steps. About 20 mins walk downhill to the Colosseum (don't try it uphill from town unless you have a lot of stamina!).
The reception staff were particularly helpful and directed us to a lovely restaurant in Trastevere. The room was big, clean and excellently furnished. It was very quiet.
Breakfast offered an excellent choice and good coffee.
Would recommend the hotel and go again, if in Rome!
Great Stay!!

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Metropole in Rome (April 2004) The hotel was fantastic and the staff very pleasant and friendly. The hotel is ideally situated and within walking distance of all the major attractions and the termini train station. A quick recommendation: If you decide to travel from the airport to the hotel by train, when you arrive in the Termini station walk through the station to the far end using the flat escalators. When leaving the station turn right and walk until you pass the large Police station, then turn left and first left and the hotel is approximately 50metres on your right. We made the mistake of walking straight out of the station and ended up having to walk the entire length of the Via Amedeo as the hotel is at the far end from the station. That being said the walk is only about 10mins. I would definately stay again if in Rome!!

We stayed at the Metropole on the 12th March.Within walking distance from the Termini Train Station. We got upgraded to one of the newly re-furbished rooms, with lovely decor, sparkling bathrooms with televisons, new modern furniture.Reception staff very friendly and helpful.Breakfast buffet excellent.Do note, yes there are still some rooms with the coconut matting on the walls, as from the 6th floor upwards all these rooms have been upgraded to a very high standard. When you check in as k for the recently refurbished rooms, they are soundproofed. It seems large tour groups were getting the old style rooms but they will be upgraded in the future.None of the refurbishment was heard.
A really good hotel
from Livia
This is a really good hotel with all the touches you expect in a 4-star hotel. Our room was spacious enough, well furnished, good modern bathroom, the staff were helpful and courteous, the breakfast first class (yes, there is a non-smoking section in the breakfast room but you have to ask for it), well situated, clean. The big bonus - they advertise sound-proofed rooms and they are right. Our room was very quiet, no noise from outside or adjoining rooms. We would definitely stay here again.
Stay Here if You Can Get a Good Deal

I would stay here again. Within walking distance from Rome Termini train station. Yes, the room did have that " bamboo" carpet for some wallpapering but it isn't as bad as a previous reviewer wrote. It was very clean and modern, nice tiled bathroom (no tub though). They seem to do a lot of business with corporate travelers, and Japanese groups ( must be good if they stay there)Great buffet breakfast you can load up in the morning and skip lunch. Most dining staff was very attentive and pleasant; front desk staff mostly pleasant and they tried to get us all the information we asked for. I got deal thru Expedia and was satisfied.
Great location, comfortable room
from JMSurrey
We stayed for 3 nights in November 03. I found the hotel very pleasant and the room very comfortable and spacious. I don't understand the other negative reviews unless there is a large discrepancy in the size and furnishings between rooms. OK, yes, the decor is dated but that it not high on my list of priorities.
The hotel is extremely close to Termini and transport links all over Rome and beyond. Piazza Venetia, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi fountain are all within 1/2 hour's slow amble.
I found the staff pleasant and helpful when asked but not pushy or obsequious like staff in US hotels, which may be the reason for some of the other reviewers comments about them.
Breakfast was an eclectic buffet including staples for tourists from all over Europe. Bacon and eggs, pastries, cake, salami, fruit, yogurt I could go on for pages.
I really enjoyed my stay and would recommend the hotel to anyone.
Awesome

The hotel was big, pretty luxurious, and just what we needed to end our trip. The hotel room was very spacious, the floors on the bathroom were heated and the bed was about a queen size (though it might have been two beds put together).
A pretty good breakfast is served in the mornings and the location can't be beat. It's about a 20 minute walk to the forum and a 1 minute walk to the Metro station (Termini). All in all, the staff was helpful and it could not have been better.
we loved it...

I was there with my partner just before Xmas, and we were assigned a simply faboulus room on the 5th floor. This floor has been recently refurbished with beautiful and stylish furnitures...Our stay in Rome couldn't have been more pleasant.

Top Local Tips for Rome
Don't get ripped off by taxi drivers
Make sure when you first get into the taxi that the taxi meter is set for fare stage 1 and not 2 in the centre. It comes to about twice the price otherwise. Even a colleague native to Rome regularly experiences such an attempt at overcharging.
Be cautious of pickpockets.
Be careful of your belongings in Rome. There are definitely pickpockets around the city, especially on public transportation, which is often crowded. Keep a tight grip on handbags and don't place wallets in back pockets.
Forget Pompei , go to Ostia Antica
We considered taking out grandsons to Pompei, had been there 7 years ago. Trip to there meant all day travel. chose trip to Ostia, best decision on trip, 20 miles from Rome so we did the whole thing in the morning and saw more of Rome in afternoon, you have the place to yourself, great mosacis (better than Pompei), no commercialism like Pompei, just as rewarding and very serence.
