Great location

5 mins to Vatican but 3 hour queue so have early breakfast and wear comfy shoes. We got to St Peters Basillica about 7.45 am (another early start) and went straight in when we came out another 3 hour queue. If you enjoy walking other attractions are about 2 miles away but there is a metro just round corner from hotel which is very easy to follow and will take you to see other sights. Hotel receptionist was very very helpful. Make sure you get price for journey from airport to hotel as we got done should be 60 euros. Rome is beautiful so enjoy.
Basic, simple and clean. Some staff friendly and helpful and others a bit harried.

The rooms were very small but clean and "no frills". The staff for the most part were helpful but a few were very rushed and seemed overworked. Breakfast was okay considering they didn't have a real restaurant which proved a problem in the evening.
Would choose another hotel the next trip.

Close to the Vatican Museum, clean, efficient and friendly hotel. Rooms a bit small, especially the bathroom.

The hotel is located literally within 5 minutes walk of the Vatican. The area itself was a quite down-trodden and dirty. The hotel was basic but clean. The staff were very helpful. My main disappointment was the restaurant. It wasn't possible to eat there during the evening. If your purpose is to visit the Vatican then this location is good, but only to for a very short stay.

I want to come back! It was a great hotel! The door was awesome! Does Simone still work there? He was very nice to my family!

Poor Business Practices

This hotel refused to honor their confirmed reservation rate and charged an additional Euro55/night. Staff pleasant except for Stephania. Food poor. Rooms poor quality and noisy.

Best for Vatican

from pgtips
We have just returned from a 3 night visit to Rome. have been before and stayed in very posh hotel full of American OAP's. It was great, but a bit over the top if you are on a budget week-end.The Spring House, is small rooms, spotlessly clean, big comfy beds, lovely guys on reception, nice canapes at the tiny bar/reception area after 4pm, and cannot be bettered for value and close proximity to the Vatican. You see the tour guides going past every morning on the way there. We found several fantastic, cheap restaurants if you turn left out the front door, and head right along the little main street, Then just look up the side streets, and you will find plenty. Do not go to the restaurant on the corner it is a real rip-off. We would not hesitate to use this Best Western hotel again.

Think twice about this place. There is a better hotel around the corner. All I can say is they are liars and hopefully the Italy police and tourist department will take care of it.

Nice but rooms a little noisy.

Just returned from 8 days in Rome and stayed in this Best Western the entire time. We had 2 rooms as we had our teen kids with us.

Breakfast room as stated by others fills up fast. Front desk manager "Fabrizio" was a great help and spoke 90% English.

Next door rooms a little loud. We had to move to another room after 2nd night. Same problem with the kids room. Street noise not a problem.

Neighborhood safe as we went out each night for drinks late.

Just a side note, watch out for the young (17-20) Gypsy girls near the Colosseum, they follow you and look for opportunity to go into your bag.

Great Stay...Close to Vatican

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at this hotel on the last leg of our 2 week trip across Europe and this was my favorite hotel. It was very clean and had pergo floors in the rooms which was a lot nicer than carpet because it doesn't hold dirt! We had 3 rooms total and somehow I got the best room which had a balcony while the other 2 did not. All for the same price. The bathroom was excellent and the room was very clean. This was the largest room we had through our 2 weeks as well. The staff was very helpful and spoke a variety of languages. The breakfast was great with a good variety. You can even have breakfast served in your room instead at no extra charge. The best part was sitting on our balcony and people watching. We were very close to the Metro. It was hard finding our way the first time, but after we walked WAY out of our way we realized how close we really were. Somewhere close there was a huge market, but I was lost at the time so I'm not sure the street it was on. If you like markets I would definetely seek it out....We were also extremely close to the Vatican....perhaps a 5-10 minute walk depending on your pace. This works out well if you're trying to get there early to beat the crowds or finishing and want to get "home" quick to relax. A note about the Vatican...it was PACKED, probably a lot of tour groups....around noon. We came back about 3:30 and we walked right into the ticket counter (the line was wrapped around to St. Peter's Square earlier). Super hotel.....totally a great stay!

Great Hotel, Awesome Breakfast

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was an above average hotel. I found the recommendation from Rick Steve's. Love you Rick! It was hard to find a Quad room in Rome, but we got a great room, with a balcony on a quiet street right near the Vatican. The breakfast is incredible with eggs, homemade pastries and everything else. The staff was nice and arranged a Pompei trip for us. I would stay here again, especially if you are travelling with kids.

Absolutely no complaints here. Room was nice and clean, bed comfortable. Would stay here again and recommend it to anyone.

Enjoyed our stay...

from legaleagle5
We stayed at the Spring House Hotel in June 2005. It is located quite near to the Vatican, within a 5 minute walk and conveniently located to lots of shops and restaurants.

The rooms were a bit small and the air conditioning almost nonexistent, it would have been better without the substandard air conditoner and just open windows as the air conditioner made the room quite humid.

The staff were pleasant, helpful, and all spoke English. The breakfast buffet was very nice, with a large selection of hot and cold items. The breakfast room was small, although typical for a European hotel.

There are some nice restaurants within a close walking distance from the hotel, however "La Cucaracha" Mexican restaurant across the street should be avoided as the food was terrible.

The hotel also offers a taxi service to Rome Ciampino airport for 45 Euros which came in handy as we found it difficult to get a bus to the airport.

Overall, we had an enjoyable stay and I would definitely go back to this hotel if I am ever in Rome again.

Good value, great breakfast

from ScubaTuna
Nice location less than 15min walk to vatican museums great breakfast buffet (for italy anyway) best brekkie we had in itlian hotel although the breakfast room is small and you have to go early to make sure you get a seat.Room was ok everything modern but not made with the highest of workmanship.Shower is tiny i could hardly turn around in it, our room had a nice little balconey that had a view of the vatican wall and the backs of local apartments. We could sit there and watch locals having dinner.Staff in breakfast room very nice, front desk staff less so, still they did there jobs. Dont goto the mexican restaraunt across the street overpriced and extremly average. We stayed for a week in feb and there was some construction work going on on our floor, didnt find it annoying however as we were out all day. I think this hotel caters mostly for buisness people as we only noticed a few other tourists staying there.Overall a good hotel, great location for vatican visits.

Excellent Hotel, Good Location

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is an excellent hotel in a good location being only a 15 minute taxi ride from the central station. All the staff speak good English and are extremely helpful especially in recommending and booking restaurants.

The rooms are clean and tidy and the buffet style breakfast has an excellent choice of items.

The hotel is perfectly situated for the Vatican museums especially as it is advisable to get there as early as possible to avoid the queues. The area around the hotel has a limited number of good restaurants but for a long weekend that shouldn't be a problem.

The only downside is that it is a bit of a trek to some of the sights (Coliseum especially) if you want to avoid using the Metro which I strongly advise you do. However if you're happy to walk or take a taxi then this shouldn't present you with any problems.

Excellent city hotel

Stayed at the Best Western Spring House for 3 nights at the end of February 2005. Excellent value for money in a good location.
All staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. Complementary Tea/Coffee making facilities, Iron/Ironing board available on request, even facecloths available if requested!
Excellent breakfats with a good choice of cold and hot dishes with choice of coffees/teas etc.
Only 2 mins walk from the Vatican Museum and about ten mins from St Peters and Castell de Sant Angello. Surrounding area very pleasant with plenty of good restaurants nearby, as well as good quality shopping in the via collo de renzo.
Would recommend this hotel to anyone despite being away from the centre.

Top Local Tips for Rome

mugged in Rome Beware of thieving gypsies, would highly recommend wearing a money belt and ladies leave your bag at home.

Cheap transport 1 EURO gets you 75 mins on Metro or bus, including any connections along the way. Great when your feet give out. Many of Rome's sights are quite close together so your transport ride is probably useful at beginning or end of day.

Use it! The Metro is clean and cheap and easy to use. We got an all day travel card which you can use for buses as well, but check the times they close.
