Good, value for money hotel

from Karan3842
We just returned after a four-day visit to Rome and an eight-day trip to Switzerland. Since this forum gave us so much information before we left on our trip, I should share with you our experience.

We stayed at Hotel Sonya, which I booked directly through their website and without any hassle. The hotel is centrally located near Termini station, (Opposite Opera house) yet away from the crowd and in a quiet area. The staff are very polite and nice. They even guided us how to take the easiest route to see popular monuments. When we were checking out of the hotel to catch an early morning plane, they so kindly packed for us some breakfast to eat later!

The hotel, on arrival, supplies you with a nicely printed good quality city map. There is also a computer in the small lobby with Internet connection, which is free for residents.

The room was very neat and tidy (We took a three-bedded room) and was well-cleaned every day morning after we left for our sight-seeing. Nicely air-conditioned.

The breakfast is fine. (Though we didn't like the heavily sugar-coated croissants). There are a good number of nice restaurants just a block away from the hotel – from Italian to Chinese to Indian.

The downside of the hotel: The shower cubicle is very small. A burly body may find it difficult to enter - leave alone taking a good shower! I hope it is not the same in other rooms. Otherwise, the toilets are clean and hygiene.

Overall, the hotel is good value for money considering Rome as a popular tourist destination.

Very Comfortable

from Vine999
I have only been in Rome once and that was recently when I and my husband stayed at the Hotel Sonya. The hotel was lower priced than many of the hotels I looked at on the Internet. The location of the hotel was important to me. The neighborhood was comfortable to me and yet we had a convenient walk to the train station. The hotel was very clean, and secure, and we felt it was an excellent value. The desk clerks were extremely helpful and we used free Internet access from the lobby. We liked the open view from our room which was across the street from the Opera House. There were at least two restaurants and a parking garage within two blocks of the hotel and our room and private bath had everything we could have wanted including a TV and safe with a key. We had to double-park to bring in our suitcases, and the desk clerk helped us with those. My only problem with our room was that I am not very tall and I had trouble reaching the clothes rod in the closet; however there was plenty of shelf space, so that was not really a problem.

nice hotel

Found this hotel from the Rick Steve's guide. Great hotel, nice and accomodating staff. Nice size room and bathroom. Good shower pressure. We stored our valuables in the free safe in the armoire. Breakfast downstairs gave you the option of cereal, bread, croissant, with butter and jam, and coffee and juice. Our room was on the 6th floor and we had nice views of rooftops in surrounding buildings. The area was very quiet at night, and quiet safe. My husband and I walked the 10 minute distance from the Termini Station or bus stops to the hotel around 9-10 p.m. at night and it was quite safe. The only thing I didn't like was that the 'double' bed that we requested was actually two beds pushed together. I would definitely stay here again.

Well worth the money!

My wife and I stayed there for almost a week. It's the third time we visited Rome and it's the best hotel so far when you took the cost into consideration as well. Hotel Sonya was affordable, had an ok location and great service. It was nice and clean and we're not easily satisfied! The only downer was thin doors to the rooms which created some noise. If I would stay there again? Oh, yes!

Lovely hotel

Just back from this hotel. Good location, near the Termini train station, very clean rooms, quiet. Helpful staff. Couldn't fault it.

Excellent

We recently spent 5 nights in Rome staying at Hotel Sonya. We had a wonderful experience at the hotel. The staff were superb, very helpful, friendly and charming. The rooms were big, comfortable, very neat, clean and tidy. We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast (fresh rolls, pastries, yoghurt etc).

Hotel Sonya is centrally located so we had no trouble walking to many of the major sights, and the termini is very close by also. There were some nice restaurants near by and the area felt safe to walk around at night.

We would definitely go back to Hotel Sonya again.

Excellent

I live in Sonya 19-24 marth in triple room. Very good hotel! Good room, walking distance from main historical places, only to Vatican by taxi 7EUR. Very clean, good staf. All OK!!!
Next time in Rome only Sonya Hotel!

A decent three star hotel

No problem in recommending to others. Good points - very clean, good sized bedroom, large double bed, free internet usage in lobby, friendly English-speaking staff, mini-bar and kettle in room, good location near Opera House and close to Repubblica Metro and Termini Rail station. Breakfast fine - cereal, tea/coffee/juice, yoghurt, rolls.
Not so good points - bathroom a bit small ( but very clean ), shower cubicle not good for anyone claustrophobic.
We paid 100 Euros a night for a double room with b/fast in March 2005.
Overall very good value for money.

Staff second to none.

My husband and I have just returned from four nights in the Hotel Sonya in Rome. The hotel was central and in a good area for seeing all the sights. This was particularly important to us as my husband is in a wheelchair.Although the hotel is not suitable for anyone completely wheelchair bound, my husband can walk with sticks so it was fine .The hotel was clean, comfortable and quiet.
The main thing about the hotel though was the staff. They could not do enough for my husband and we were very touched by all the help they gave him.I would recommend this hotel to anyone as good value for money. We would certainly go back again.

Great hotel- we will be back

I can only really repeat what has already been said, but I think this hotel was a real bargain. Good price, clean large room (certainly larger and nicer than you would get in the UK for the same money), and great location - the proximity to termini made it so easy to get anywhere, and we were able to walk to many places also. The location was also good- and felt quite safe. The shower was fairly small, and whenever the toilet flushed in the next room, it sounded like someone was knocking at our door, but they are pretty minor points, and did not detract from our holiday in any way.

Top Local Tips for Rome

Tickets for bus transportation We purchased tickets for the public bus system right at the front desk of our hotel (Hotel Sonya) instead of the tobacco shops we had expected to buy them at. The front desk staff was helpful in explaining how the tickets worked.

Go to the restaurant where one meal/ day is cooked by Mama. I forget the name of this place, but supposedly you can ask around about it -- "Mama" (what you actually would think an Italian Mama would look like - older, in raggedy clothes, cookin' up a storm, bossing around her sons) cooks 1 meal / day - there is no menu. Whatever mama is cookin' is what you're eating! I want to say this place was near Campo di Fiore (but not IN Campo di Fiore). This is as authentic Italian as you are going to get! Make sure you ask around for it!

Tour Guides in Rome/Vatican City My only suggestion is to be VERY careful of the tours they suggest because we were ripped off when we booked a tour of the Vatican. At the end of our tour the guide took us to one store about 1 block from the Vatican which totally ripped us off. The guide fed us a story about all the stuff being hand made. I purchased a Rose Scented Rosary for 4 times the price that it was inside the VATICAN. When i tried getting a refund they kicked me out of the store. The guide receives a cut from the total purchases you make. BE VERY AWARE OF THIS!!!! Make sure that you shop around and don’t every buy anything that a tour guide recommends because more than likely there is something in it for them. Oh and make sure that when you book a tour you get one with an ear piece. It can be very hard to hear with 200-300 people in the same place.
