Stayed for a few nights in March 2006. Staff all very friendly and helpful, room very clean and new, no kettle in the room and shower of average quality . Breakfast was poor, considering the cost (as previous reviewers had said). Overall feeling; a safe choice of hotel, an excellent but quiet location close to the Spanish Steps, nice check in staff, good concierge, but expensive for what it is.

Overall Good Hotel

We recently stayed at this hotel for four nights as a part of our honeymoon trip in Italy. The highlights of this hotel are: the location (although it would of been nice to have a close internet cafe nearby, but the hotel provided an alternative as internet on the tv or hookup of your computer), breakfast (they have scrambled eggs, bacon, and hot dogs. This is considered to be an American breakfast. I didn't see much of the European guests eating it except the Americans), the concierge is helpful and getting you tours and taxis. I recommend that you request a cab when you get downstairs because the cabs will start the meter on their way to the hotel. The wait won't be long maybe five minutes because of its central location of the hotel. The room of the hotel was regular by European standards and small by US standards, it’s nice to have a safe in the room and the bathroom is suspicious. There are also near by restaurants and convenient stores nearby so you can get water, etc. This can help avoid temptation of the wet bar.
In regard to tours, I recommend that some attractions are better to see it yourself and just rent one of those museums hearing devices. Although the group tours were more convenient and the guides were nice and insightful, going to some of the attractions (Vacatican and Coliseum, I think are better to do it on your own and cost effective). If you have group party another good option would be to hire a private car with driver to take you to all the sites.

Great service

We stayed at 2 other hotels in Rome and this was definetly the best hotel for the money! We paid less than $300 E for a triple. The service & rooms are 5 * quality. (I think they just remodeled). Very friendly staff (which is rare in Italy). It is off on a quiet street so you have a short cab ride to places, but we slept very well at night because it's so quiet! The doorman definetly added extra security & service to our stay. I'd stay there the next time I go to Rome.

Elegant Hotel

We just returned from 4 days at the Sofitel. Excellent value and a very good staff. Location near the Spanish Steps and shopping was very convenient. We would recomend this hotel for both Value and service, well worth the 4 star rating.

Classy hotel overlooking Villa Borghase

4 and 5# hotels are expensive in Rome and of questionable value.
Sofitel Roma given the relative price range is a good choice.
There is excellent foot and metro access to Roman interests. The room is large by European standards and impeccably clean. Beautiful bathroom.
Can't see staying at the Hassler at those prices above a bunch of drunks on the Spanish Steps. Anyway, for reaching the Spanish Steps Area it's an easy walk, including a route throuugh Spagna Station if it's raining.
Breakfast room is classy but no fresh fruit.
Some of the staff are extremely friendly and helpfull, something you cannot say for a lot of Italian/European hotels. Friendliness seems to go up with the price of the hotel but then the stufiness can kick in. Sofitel Roma has a good balance. A very nice if somewhat pricey stay. But if you want to stay in a Rome hotel with such amenities, etc. it comprises good value.

Excellent for Solo Travelers - Safe location, Beautiful and Close to attractions

This hotel is truly remarkable. From the moment I booked my reservations with this hotel via email, I received a wonderful letter of confirmation stating that whatever I would need to make my trip pleasant, they would be more than happy to accommodate. I will tell you: They deliver on their promise! The staff is very attentive to all requests and really pride themselves on delivering excellent service. The hotel is in a very safe and beautiful area which is less than a 5 minute walk to the famous Spanish Steps (which leads you to lots of shopping). Many restaurants are within walking distance, so it's easy to dine locally. The Borghese is also a few blocks away, so you can walk to the museums or just sit in the park. I stayed here for several days and everyone from the front desk staff, to the restaurant servers, to the doormen, really went out of their way to make me feel special and welcome. It's actually kind of remarkable to think what a powerful impact they left with me. I would stay here again and again and again!

They also have tons of umbrellas for you if it rains. If you need anything ironed, there is someone available to do it for you for a fee ($6 a shirt), but they will not let you borrow an iron for personal use, which is really my only disappointment. Breakfast was simple: fruits, cheeses, meat, yogurt, cereals, pastries, eggs and juice, but it was quite satisfying.
Again, this is a perfect hotel and I would choose it over any 5 star down the road.

I have just returned home after staying two nights with friends,
the decor and service was second to none .The staff were very friendly and more than helpful,we would all highly reccomend this hotel to all.

I found the service at Sofitel to be very good in terms of responding to requests such as bringing forgotten toiletries to the room, calling cabs, providing maps, directions, etc.

The room was small and the bed old (typical for Europe), but the room was clean.

The breakfast was not very good. The fair was typical European, sausages, cheeses, breads, watery scrambled eggs, cereals and sad looking fruit. If it were not included in the package I would not have had it their.

I found the hotel to be equivelant to a low to mid-range 4-star hotel in the U.S.

A big advantage is that the hotel is on a quite street. Rome is so loud that is was a nice escape. It is about a 10 minute walk to the Spanish steps/shopping and about a 30min walk to the Coliseum. It's a longer hike to the Vatican (too far for most people to walk).

A Beautiful Place to Stay

The hotel lobby and bar were very nice, but we really loved the spacious room and bathroom and tasteful decor. The room was very clean, the hallways were quiet, and found it's location by Via Veneto very convenient. The staff is very friendly, especially the doorman. We had such a great experience at this hotel that we booked our stay at the Sofitel in Venice for our upcoming vacation.

Excellent Location

We stayed at the Sofitel after the original Hotel we were supposed to be staying in had a problem with our room. We were transferred down to the Sofitel by a courtesy cab and was more than please with this great alternative.
Not only was it much closer to most of Rome's attractions, but the rooms were decorated lavishly and the service was great.
No complaints whatsoever!

A small piece of paradise in Rome

A wonderul hotel in a quiet safe area but within easy walking distance of the Spanish steps and Trevi fountains, good shops and restaurants. Italy is not renowned for good breakfasts but this hotel makes an exception. A fantastic buffet breakfast served in a beautiful restaurant.
Rooms are spotlessly clean and staff cannot do enough do be of assistance.
Hard to believe that this hotel hasn't received the five stars it more than deserves.

A tip: Take the hotel lift to the 7th floor and you get a breathtaking view of Rome (especially at night) from the hotel roof terrace.

Top Local Tips for Rome

Eating in Rome We ate in a different restaurant each night and although the food was good and the service adequateI would not recommend Rome as a great city for dining.

Vatican Go to the Vatican on a Sunday morning around 11.30 am and wait to see the Pope at noon. A very special experience.

Hot summer months I would not recommend going to Italy in June, July or August if you're planning on doing a lot of sightseeing because the heat is almost unbearable. If you're plan is to see a little, walk a little, shop a little, stay inside and be pampered than any time during the year should be fine. WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES!!!!! Lots of uneven pavement and cobblestones so forget about looking totally cute and go for comfort.
