This hotel did not work for us - GO ELSEWHERE

I was traveling with a family of four. I found the hotel unpleasant and would definitely not stay there again and would not recommend it to anyone. We had two rooms - both of which, though clean, measured about 9 feet by 9 feet. The room on the outside was very noisy - perhaps because we arrived on a Friday and this Campo De Fiori location seems to be party central for the younger set. It did not quiet down until about 4:00 am. At one point my wife thought they might be tipping cars over in the street after the bottle smashing contest (but more likely the early garbage crew or towing crew). Further, this outside room, #201, developed some weird sewage odor. The inside room we had that first night was very quite, so the next day we moved to two inside rooms that were not adjacent. Unfortunately there was a door allowing one of the rooms to connected with another, and you could hear EVERY sound made in the adjacent room - rustled paper, phone calls, zippers, farts, and the conversation of the boys who returned there at about 4:00 AM and mercifully fell asleep within about 30 minutes. We found the staff relatively rude - some sort of surly Roman gay thing at the front desk. All this for 280 Euros a night! This was a very unpleasant stay for us. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.

Have sent many satisfied clients here

I have been sending clients from this travel agency to the Smeraldo for many years and have always had glowing reports about the cleanliness, the hospitality offered, the location and the reasonable price for the rooms. The location near the Piazza Navona is wonderful for clients wishing to be in the old part of Rome, yet convenient to everything else. A great walking area surrounfs the hotel. Have never had a complaint.

The good and the bad

from A TripAdvisor Member
My partner and I stayed at the Smeraldo for one week in the beginning of May ’04. Rome is a city of expensive hotels and the 135 Euro per night price was definitely inexpensive. The location of this hotel is fantastic. You are in the middle of everything yet still on a quiet small street. The rooms are simple but clean with a lot of closet space. The breakfast room in the basement was bright and cheerful with a pretty good buffet. The bathrooms were upscale and included an exhaust fan. Are there cons to the Smeraldo? The sounds from other rooms and the hallway enter into the bedrooms. The bathwater is tepid at best after 9 in the morning. There is no fruit in the breakfast buffet and there is artificial orange juice. But, all and all we considered the Smeraldo our favorite hotel in Italy. Sure there are problems, but at this price and location it can not be beat.

Great location but surly staff

from missmay
It's unfortunate that this hotel had such a surly staff at the front desk becuase aside from that, it would be a wonderful hotel. Rooms and bathrooms are small for US standards, but are clean and nicely decorated. Location is unbeatable. Front desk staff, however, was snotty and rude. "Fabio" (so nicknamed becuase he couldn't stop fiddling with his long hair) was unhelpful when we asked if they had a map of the city that we could have. We were finally able to get one when we asked a different staff member the next day.

Nice Hotel, Great Location

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our family of four occupied two rooms for six nights starting March 7th 2004. The rooms were smallish, but nicely appointed and very clean. The beautiful marble bathrooms had been renovated, but the showers are the size of a phone booth. Typical of European hotels- especially in historic areas. The location is very good and you can walk the entire city. The breakfast is convienent and there are lots of choices around for meals. The hotel staff was very helpful and we took advantage of the car service to and from the airport, reasonably priced and well worth it. The noise level was good with the windows closed. All in all we had a great stay.

Nice ** Hotel but cosiders itself *** and charges as such

Just got back from an 8 night stay at the Smeraldo. It is in a nice area and the staff is helpful. The rooms are small and the showers are really small. The outside noise is shut out when windows are closed.
Inside walls are paper thin and you can hear everything in the next rooms and in the hall ways. I think as a two star hotel it would be great. Unfortunately, they consider themselves a three star hotel and charge accordingly. Nice hotel just over priced at this time even if the dollar were stonger against the Euro. I'll try other hotels in the area next time in Rome.

Location, Location, Location!

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Smeraldo is just a lovely hotel, absolutely immaculate. The staff is most efficient and accommodating. It is exactly where you want to be in while in Rome...for a very reasonable price. Delightful coffee bar across the alley with wonderful Italian breakfast (a coffee and pastries) and sandwiches. A couple of "real" Italian restaurants just a few doors down... Would go back in a heartbeat!

Perfect Location for a great time in Rome

from Blanca54
We just returned from our trip and we had a fantastic time. We really enjoyed our staye at Hotel Smeraldo. The staff was very helpful. The location is perfect. Everything is within walking distance. We walked to the Trevi, Spanish Step and all the famous sites in Rome. Plazza Navona and Campo di Fiori are only a few blocks away. Great restaurants all around. The area of this Hotel is so very Roman. It has a lot of character. The room was impecable. We will be back.

Smeraldo a charm!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Hotel Smeraldo is the ideal pensione. It's in an ideal location - within walking distance from everything in Rome, very close to a busstop, and just around the corner from the best pizza in Rome (in our humble opinion). The lobby and rooms are spotless (we stayed in May 2003), and quiet, which is a rare treat. We even enjoyed watching Italian MTV! The staff are very helpful and courteous. We'd stay there again and hopefully will soon. Buon Viaggio!

Most charming location!

Our family of five just returned from four nights at the Hotel Smeraldo in Rome. First, we were very pleased with our rooms, which had quaint views of the alley below, while the roof top terrace views were of varied roofs, domes, clock towers and other wonders! Every day after walking to all the major sights and numerous delightful piazzas, shops and trattorias, we returned to immaculately clean rooms! Our rooms and baths looked brand new, which was very pleasant. We loved sitting in the coffee bar across the alley and visiting the bakery around the corner! The hotel staff helped us find great, unknown treasured-by-Romans trattorias. They called cabs for us and gave us very personal care! We heartily recommend this hotel and will return there when in Rome again!

Smeraldo a hoot.

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at Smeraldo in Easter 2000 with a group of students and a teacher and his wife, from Davidson College; the highlight was our Easter day supper on the balcony at Smeraldo; it was 4 or 5 courses if I remember, and then afterward the teacher taught us how to Ballroom dance, and even attempted to have a few tenors sing the accompaniment to the dancing. I was depressed back then, but that's beside the point; the point is that Smeraldo really is a winner; it's clean and reasonably priced if you are not rich or maybe you are in to saving money and have tons of it. You're a hop and a skip from Agrippa's Pantheon, good gelatto, and a intracity bus stop. Viva Smeraldo!

For a great time in Rome...

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I just got back from a week-long trip to Rome, where we stayed at the Hotel Smeraldo. We found it to be a very pleasant place to stay. The staff was very helpful, although at night you might find that they don't speak English well. The postings here re. location accurately describe the convenience of staying here. Everything is within walking distance, and the neighborhood has great character. The streets are really too narrow for much car traffic, so the noise is not bad. Our bedsprings were a little worn, but not uncomfortable. The room was impeccable. We would definately stay here again if given the opportunity.

January/Feb We didn't queue for a single thing and the weather was lovely - end of January is a fantastic time to go.

Pantheon Make sure you visit this - the sight as you come around the corner is brilliant.

overpriced tea rooms Babingtons Tea rooms next to Spanish steps charge silly prices for a cup of tea and a piece of tasteless cake. I would avoid it. We ordered thinking it would be special and it wasn,t
