Very nice Hotel!!

We loved this hotel. The rooms were very clean and was great for a family with our Jr. Mansard giving us two separate bedrooms, one upstairs. The bathroom was nice, but the ceiling was very low, be careful you don't hit your head.
The staff was great and the breakfast they served was the best we had in Italy during our 2 week trip.
The only thing we wished was that the hotel was closer to the big sights in Rome. If you stay, I recommend getting a cab to the the heart of Rome instead of walking, it's quite a long way.

It is with pleasure that I express my gratitude to the people of Hotel Santa Maria. The six of us will have an unforgetable experience with the conforts, the cleanliness, the beautiful courtyard, the continental breakfast, so rich and varied, and the kind Philipino people who served cappuccino at its best. The location in Trastevere gave us a chance to appreciate Rome in its typical old ways and the Roman neighbors who enchanted us with so many stories of the traditional Roman ways. We hope to return to Rome and to Hotel Santa Maria for the warmth with which the employees at the office welcomed us and for the help they provided in our many necessities.

What an incredible and wonderful hotel. The staff is superb, Giovanna was wonderful she took care of all our restaurant and car reservations before we even got to Rome. I highly recommend you stay here, this hotel is a GEM...
The Hotel Santa Maria-for Saints and Sinners Alike

In July '04, we stayed a week in Trastevere at the Santa Maria, a converted convent. An excellent spot for saints and sinners alike. When we return, we'll stay there again. Lovely location, lovely people, lovely simple room, altogether just lovely.

My husband, myself and our 3 year daughter spent 16 days in Italy (May 2004) and our time spent in Rome was delightful. The Hotel Santa Maria is so different than any other hotel we have stayed in and we enjoyed it thoroughly. The rooms are small but clean and the breakfasts were the best we had in all of Italy. The chocolate chip bread was amazing!! The best coffee I had in all of Italy! The breakfast staff and housekeeping were so polite! The courtyard is the true gem of the hotel. After a long day of walking and sightseeing coming back and relaxing here in the late afternoon is the ideal way to spend any day. The snacks and drinks were just an added bonus. The area outside the hotel is something to be desired, but once you get your bearings then you realize that you are really experiencing the true Italy. I would absolutely stay here again. We walked to all of the top sightseeing spots from the Vatican to the Spanish Steps. There is no other way to really see Rome other than to walk it and we would do it again in a heartbeat - with a child in tow. Lastly, make sure to eat dinner at the restaurant around the corner - Vizi Capitali. We found it as we were just walking around. It was amazing and the staff was so warm and gracious. The food was so delicious and all with beautiful presentation and of course the wine....what more can be said about the wine in Italy. You can't go wrong!! Enjoy!
An oasis in Rome

We booked the Hotel Santa Maria after reading stellar reviews on TripAdvisor, and I'm happy to say I agree with all the five-star ratings. The hotel is located on a quiet street in the fun Trastevere neighborhood in SW Rome.
Rooms are clean and very well thought out. (We stayed in the small, but workable room #16.) All amenities are up to date and tasteful. Breakfasts were fantastic. The courtyard is a perfect spot for pre-dinner cocktails or post-sightseeing relaxation. We saw a couple bring their own bottle of wine and the waiter brought them glasses and corkscrew, so their stated policy about no outside beverages being consumed in the courtyard isn't too strict. We always ordered house wine or beer and they were great, and reasonably-priced.
Hotel staff were nothing but pleasant and helpful. From email exchanges before we arrived, to giving us directions to sights, to always having a smile to share.
Piazza Santa Maria is a quaint old square and less than a minute's walk from the hotel. We walked to every sight within Rome -- all the squares, the Vatican, Colosseum, Pantheon, Roman Forum, Borghese, etc. and never felt it was too long of a walk.
Every time we walked back to Trastevere and to Hotel Santa Maria, we felt like it was the best place to be for the night, bar none.

Loved Hotel Santa Maria

My daughter and I spent 3 nights there in mid June and loved it. The location was great, away from the "big city", but close enough to walk wherever we wanted to go. The staff was friendly, the best cappuchino of our two weeks in Italy and an overall lovely setting. Especially liked all the good little restaurants right near the hotel. We would stay there again!
Great location, but small rooms and a bit noisy

We loved the location of this hotel. Trastevere is a funky neighborhood filled with great restaurants, bars, and shops. Also, the hotel courtyards were nice and well-kept. The breakfast service was good, and it was fun to enjoy breakfast outside in the colorful courtyard in the morning and watch the locals hanging their laundry and the cats jumping from rooftop to rooftop.
We had two main complaints: First, we agree with the earlier comment about noise. It was difficult to sleep here. The biggest problem was the other guests at the hotel, especially the young children. The room doors seem to amplify outside noise from the courtyard, and there also was late-night noise from someone in the unit above us. Second, the room is pretty much just a bare-bones motel room, and we felt crowded with just two people. It was very clean, though. Of course, you get what you pay for, and this was very inexpensive compared to some other places we looked at. Next time we'll pay a bit more and stay somewhere else, though.

We stayed here late May for our honeymoon. We LOVED it! Antonio at the desk was more than helpful. I had an issue with one of my credit cards and he helped me straighten it out. The breakfast was delicious! (eggs, patries, cold cuts, fruits, etc) We thought the room was great. ALso since we were newlyweds Antonio sent us a bottle of champagne and some other goodies. The hotel is in the great are of Trastevere, and it was easy to walk to local attractions (15 mins). We also got great directions by bus and subway. You really don't have to leave this area, there are so many great restaurants around and sites to see. We will defeintely return here! Oh just one thing bring your own clock, since there isn't one in the room, BUT the front desk does offer a wake up call. Love this place!!!!!

I have been to Rome three times in the last six years two with a tour group this time on our own. If you are planning to go to Rome for your first time or just about anywhere in Europe you will find when you get there, that the standards for a hotel are not as good as the States. This hotel has charm, location, cleanliness, service, a good breakfast (American coffee) and plenty of restaurants to pick from in walking distance. The only reason this hotel doesn't get an excellent is the immediate area surrounding the hotel looks trashy at times.
Top Local Tips for Rome
Taxis scarce on weekend mornings! Be careful to ask the hotel to call a taxi for your early Saturday or Sunday pick-up for the airport, train station, etc. Very few taxis in Trastevere in the early wekend morning. Easy to take a bus, though.
Don't bother to pack an umbrella! When it rains there seems to be a person on every street corner selling umbrellas. Literally, they come out of the woodwork! Had I known how easy it would be to buy a pocket umbrella for 5 EUR I would have saved the space in my suitcase and not brought one from home.
Great little Trattoria We had a wonderful meal at Quirona, a new Trattoria in Trastavere.
