Situated directly behind the Pantheon, this 3 star offers some wonderful rooms. The 4th floor on the Via Santa Chiara side has balconies for a very pleasant relaxing break during the day.
The breakfast buffet is good and the desk staff is efficient and knowledgeable.
We have stayed there several times, and if we weren't getting such a good deal with go-today at another hotel, this would be our first choice again.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Santa Chiara Hotel

from RNnyusa
I learned a valuable lesson on my first trip to Italy...always get a hotel recommendation from a friend. My cousin suggested the Santa Chiara, and after reading these reviews I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was perfect. We paid 180 Euros per night for a double room. It's located in a lovely part of Rome, walking distance to all the sights. The breakfast is large with a great selection. Staff were friendly enough for me. I agree with the rater who said the rooms were very 70's, with a terribly faded carpet and admittedly at first I was disappointed; but I had nothing to compare it to until we went to our ugly hotel in Florence which had an out-of-service elevator and no A/C in the breakfast room or stairwell. On our return to Rome we felt like the Santa Chiara was a palace (and they'd laid a new carpet!) We booked a taxi to the airport through the hotel and it came on time at 5:30 am. I will stay at the Santa Chiara again, as for uncomfortable beds, yes, I agree. Next time I'll take my own pillow.

Location Location !!!

from Yks26
My family and I stayed at the Santa Chiara in mid June. We booked 1 double and 1 quad room, as we have 3 children. The rooms were both very clean, quiet and well maintained. We asked for rooms right next to each other, and they were more than happy to accomodate us. I read all the reviews about the hotel before hand and was worried about the service and staff....not to worry....they were all very nice, and went out of there way on several occasions. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to families. Its not the Minerva next door, but its half the price. I don't need to tell you about the location, its next to everything.

Watch out for the ants!!

from bltzfgrw
I wouldn't go anywhere near the Santa Chiara again after our stay last September, 2003.

We had a confirmed reservation for a deluxe room and when we arrived were told that one did not exist...even though we had the printed confirmation with us!!

The hotel staff (very surly and snobbish) said that they could put us up in a suite. We were quite impressed until we arrived at the room. It literally was annexed on to the existing hotel and it took us two elevators and three sets of stairs to reach our destination. Of course we thought it will be nice to have a suite....until we opened the door and found a large room with ceilings in some places that were no higher than 4 to 4 1/2 feet high! Then there was also a kitchen..but that was locked. Going further into the room we found another room with a couch and table and a large outdoor veranda. Almost all of the "suite" was unusable and was something out of the 1960's.

This wasn't the worse..not yet! We went out to dinner and returned to retire. In the morning..there were literally hundreds of ants crawling around the nitestand..just inches from my face. We informed the staff and they said they would do something about it. Another nite and more ants..I guess they didn't do much.

Then, we had to leave at 3:30 a.m. to get to the airport and when we awoke, there was no power in our room....none! We had to go down to the front desk and see what they could do...all they offered was a flashlight!!

Needless to say, we requested that the Manager give us a call to discuss the matter. He never called. So, we sent an e-mail..and another and finally got a reply which was basically....

"What do you expect us to do about ants"? Maybe NOT have them..

Anyway, all in all a very bad, distasteful experience. We have enjoyed so many better hotels with friendly staff to ever think of going near the Albergo Santa Chiara.

Stay at the Residenza Canali Instead

from janalina
My husband and I stayed at the Santa Chiara on our last night in Rome. After four nights at the charmng (and less expensive) Residenza Canali we were completely disappointed in the Santa Chiara. The room decor looks like something out of a bad 70's dream. The carpets are worn, beds VERY uncomfortable and the overall impression is one of being more than a little tatty. The lobby and lounge areas are large and impressive, but the rooms are less than thrilling and have no charm whatsoever. Who wants to hang around in a hotel lobby/lounge anyway? The staff were average, but bordered on snobbish -- very much the opposite of the friendly and helpful staff at the Residenza Canali. The location of the Santa Chiara is, literally, behind the Pantheon, but so what? That does not justify the high price for the average accomodation. Any hotel in the central area of Rome is within walking distance to many, many sights. The Canali was wonderful. Stay there!

So central , but lighten up staff!!

We stayed at the Santa Chiara in the first week on June '04. We had requested the hotel to arrange a taxi pickup for us from the airport for 50 EUR. An hour after waiting, our taxi still hadn't turned up, so we took one at the rank for 5 EUR more - hardly a big saving - don't book through the hotel.

Our room (no 423) was on the top floor with a large balcony that looked over the nearby church and a side street - the bathroom was very large by some standards and was the same size as our bedroom. The rooms aren't very plush or romantic , but the location of the hotel beats everything else hands down.

The staff were always very surly and never initiated a hello or goodbye or asked if you were enjoying your stay.

If you want an excellent location, clean rooms but aren't bothered about hotel friendliness, go to the Santa Chiara.
We would definatley go back.

Location, location, location!

from marywoodall
I have been to Rome several times and there is not a better situated hotel than the Santa Chiara. It is right behind the Pantheon and convenient to everything - even a grocery store a block away! The hotel is lovely, with beautiful public rooms and spacious bedrooms (for Rome). I was there during the notorious heat wave of summer '03 and the air conditioning was heavenly. The rooms were clean and well-kept and had every convenience you could want. Breakfast was in a beautiful room and was very nice with a wide and varied selection. Even though I have stayed at much more famous hotels in Rome, I can't imagine ever staying anywhere but the Santa Chiara again. Enjoy!

Great hotel behind the Pantheon

from ddepicciotto
I have stayed various times at the Santa Chiara, the last time for 5 days during Easter 2004. I've always been very happy with everything.
The location is off course fantastic, within walking distance of all major sites, the service was very friendly, the rooms and bathrooms were very clean, spacious and quiet (but not very luxurious or romantic), breakfast was very good and varied. I highly recommend this hotel.

Pleasantly Surprised

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Santa Chiara for 3 nights in October.
We were pleasantly surprised by both the great location and the value ($225 Euros/night). What we got was a well kept room with a balcony on the 4th floor, street side. No problems with noise level and it was above average temperature in October so we had the doors open quite frequently. The staff were efficient, if not overly friendly. The breakfast was varied enough to not get old after 3 days. Bottom line - we'd stay there again.

good value

from NJ_Red
We stayed at the Santa Chiara for 3 nights in late September 2003. The hotel arranged to have a driver pick us up at the airport - a good deal for 50 euro. We were able to walk to all of the major sites & attractions in Rome from the hotel - its location is the hotel's best attribute by far. The staff was business-like (i.e. helpful when asked but not friendly). Our standard double room was OK - decent size & clean with a bathroom that included a tub/shower. Breakfast buffet was OK, what we expected but nothing special. For 202 euro per night, would stay here again if on the same budget.

Dishonest hotel - avoid at all cost.

from A TripAdvisor Member
I booked this hotel having used it on a previous occasion for business.
I was giving them a second chance after they "lost" my reservation last time (despite faxed, e-mailed and telephoned confirmations) only because of the location. This time they denied my request for a quiet room (three repeated communications to confirm this again). It is THE noisiest hotel I have stayed in and I travel every week to several European countries. They did not realise I understand Italian and so felt free to say "we have got his money - pretend we did not get his e-mail, he cannot prove it". We then observed their taxi scam when they booked separate taxis for us and an American couple who were travelling to the airport at the same time. I overheard one member of staff telling another sharply "no, do not let them share - we lose our commission". This would have saved the Americans Euros 46 for their gain of perhaps 10. Avoid this hotel. They are arrogant thieves.

Top Local Tips for Rome

Private Car If the hotel can arrange it hire a private car for pick-up and drop-ff at the airport.

Two great restaurants For a great lunch or dinner try Ristoranti a la Rampa at PIazza Mignanelli 18 just to the right of Spanish Steps or the Ristorante Clemente at Piazza della Maddalena, 4 which is just a few blocks from the Pantheon.

Vatican When visiting the Vatican in July/August its best to do a tour. Angel tours were great!
