Charming and Off the Beaten Path

from CatherinedePaquis
This hotel is lovely: bedrooms & bathrooms are chic and comfortable, breakfast buffet is delicious and very generous, and the rooftop bar is stunning at night. The staff are helpful and the location, in Trastevere slightly off the tourist route, is still close enough to walk to all the major sights.

Perfect for what we wanted

from A TripAdvisor Member
Hotel San Francesco was exactly what we were looking for. The prices were very reasonable for a hotel in Rome and the room was outfitted with all of the modern fixtures that we hoped for including a full bath, air conditioning, sizeable bathroom, etc. The breakfast buffet was very nice. The roof deck is also a nice place for having a glass of wine, though is expensive at 6E a glass. And the hotel is situated in Trastevre, which, although a 15min walk from most of the sights, is a lovely and beautiful nieghborhood with many wonderful restaurants... this is where many of the romans come to eat. In all, we would definately use Hotel San Francesco again.

Nice hotel in charming area of Rome

Nice hotel in the Trastevere section of Rome. It's relatively quiet, and an easy walk across the Tiber to the more touristed areas of Rome. Piazza Santa Maria Trastevere is a five-minute walk and is a lovely square with lots of restaurants surrounding it. There is also good transportation via tram to other areas of the city.

The hotel gives a nice impression. The lobby is nicely decorated. The rooms are a bit small, but the bathrooms are spacious. There was a closet to hang up clothes, but it would have been nice to have a dresser as well. The airconditioning was very quiet and effective, and the double-paned windows did a good job of blocking out the moderate traffic noise. (Ask for a room in the back; I think they're probably quieter.)

There's an attractive roof garden with a pleasant view. A nice place to meet before heading out for dinner.

I would definitely recommend this hotel. If you're arriving from the main airport, take the train to the Trastevere station (not the central station). It will save you a lot of hassle and expense.

Great Hotel!

Very much enjoyed stay in Hotel San Francesco. Room smallish but clean, great bathroom, nice decorative touches, great breakfast room and wonderful rooftop bar.

Staff friendly and helpful.

A good location - quiet but close to sights

explore rome from the San Francesco

This was our first trip to Rome and we chose the San Francesco from reading a Guardian Travel review. The Trastevere area is such an interesting, vibrant area to explore from and this small hotel nestling in cloistered history reflects the local atmosphere exactly. We enjoyed taking a very good breakfast overlooking an ancient courtyard and simply walking to The Vatican along the Tiber, or exploring the Forum after a stroll interupted by pasta and wine in a small resturant on the way.

Terrific in Travestre

We stayed at Hotel San Francesco in mid-May 2004. The Hotel staff is wonderful, especially Massimo and Daniele. The service started before we arrived, with them making arrangements for a car to bring us to and from the airport. For 45 Euro this is the only way to go – no stress after a long flight! Additionally, they arranged for a day trip to Pompeii and Naples – all before we arrived.

Upon Arrival, our room was freshly cleaned. Additionally, they pointed us in the right direction for a great lunch and explained where everything was in location to the hotel on a map. The bathroom has a huge walk-in shower – delightful. The room is big by European standards, with beautiful long windows that open to let in fresh air and sun. I would definitely stay in this wonderful relaxing hotel, with a great location in a residential neighborhood – no tourist pricey traps here. You’ll find delightful gelateria’s and ristarante’s in Travestre.

Small hotel, great location

We stayed at Hotel San Francesco in mid May 2004.
Trestavere is a great location, a real Roman neighborhood, near everything and safe. What we liked most was that it was not a tourist trap section, like other parts of Rome.
We stayed in a nice room with a modern bathroom. Spacious by European Standards. Room and hotel was quiet and very clean.
Great Breakfast ...much to chose from and very Italian/European. Massimo and the entire staff was extremely helpful in getting us cabs, directions, flat irons, etc...
Our last nite we stayed at another hotel near the Airport...we regretted not coming back to Trastevere and Hotel San Francesco.

we spent six nights at the Hotel San Francesco in mid-may. Overall we were very pleased. As described by others the neighborhood is less touristy, we enjoyed hearing only italian as we walked "home." The area felt very safe and we were walking home around 11pm after dinner. Very good restaurants near Santa Maria in Trastervere are a shortish walk away.
While there is some traffic in front of the hotel it quiets at night. The hotel has a very pleasant, modern lobby, nice touches like a bowls of cherry tomatoes and chocolates for nibbling on the front desk. Our room was small, but very clean, very comfortable bed (we like a firm mattress). TV has BBC and CNN. Bathroom was large, modern, attractive. Breakfast buffet was quite good, lots of fresh fruit, pasteries, breads, cereal, yogurt, juices, cold meat, cheese and always hot eggs and bacon. The breakfast room is long and narrow, one side is glass and looks out on a lovely old cloistered yard (it belong to the church next door, so one can only look). The staff was quite accomodating in calling restaurants to get reservations, arranging taxi rides, etc. location is very convenient to the tram which takes you quickly to the historic center of Rome. We enjoyed the roof top terrace, several times picnic-ing with lovely supplies from neighborhood cheese and wine shops. This is not the hotel for you if you like big Hilton/Sheraton type places, but if you enjoy smaller, less "cookie cutter" hotels in interesting areas (no tee shirt shops, no mcdonalds, no prada,) you will like this hotel. One should also be willing and able to do some walking or navigating the transportation system to really enjoy the location.(We find using public transportation interesting and a positive aspect of our travel) The price seemed quite reasonable. We will definately return and will recommend it to our friends

Weekend Break

from A TripAdvisor Member
I thought the Hotel was very good situated in a quiet area but all sights easily accessible.

I recommend the bus/tram/metro tickets which can be bought for 4 euros per day or 11 euros for 3 days, great value as you can use all services unlimited.

Customer service was great both before and after arrival, email contact was superb and all queries answered.

Desk staff nothing short of first class from serving lager, ordering taxis, waking people up so others could get into their rooms etc.

Careful at the railway station where naive travellers will be caught by unofficial taxi drivers offering rides for extortionate prices. They wanted 40 euros for two cars eg. 80 euros. We new this and used some anglo saxon words to move them on.

Use the official rank. 10 euros to our Hotel for 6 people.

I think our group behaved ok which for 12 adult males is a bonus.

Wonderful Boutique hotel in Trastavere

We stayed one night at the Hotel San Francesco, our first night in Rome. I would highly reccommend this lovely place to any traveller. The rooms were spacious, comfortable, quiet and beautifully decorated. The bathrooms were deluxe. The staff was incredibly friendly and the breakfasts were delicious. A great experience.
