Read some of the reviews and was a little worried. Should not have been, can not fault the hotel. Service at reception was good, booked in and in our room within 20 minutes. Rooms are clean and big. We also had a balcony which was nice to sit out on and relax. A good choice at breakfast from Bacon and egg to all the continental stuff. Very clean hotel and close to the tram / bus stops. We enjoyed our stay and would stay there again.

Totally deceptive advertising - the room resembled an abandoned office block - dirty walls and bathroom, cheap laminate wood everywhere, horrible old carpets and staff with a very bad attitude - STAY AWAY!!!

What a brilliant hotel, one of the best I've stayed in for a long time. Room was very clean, very modern and very comfortable. All the staff are very friendly and well presented. The location is brilliant, close to all attractions and great eating places. If I had to make any complaint it would be that the eggs and bacon are not worth eating, they're not kept warm and very salty, but the croissants well and truely make up for this oversight. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, in fact you would be missing out if you didn't stay here.

The Grim Ripa :-((( My opinions...Don't go to this hotel, please, do yourselves a favour. This is not a boutique hotel. It's dirty, very unfriendly and MANY of the rooms are no better than a simple motorway motel. You WILL NOT, on average, get a room as it appears on the brochure - it's a trade descriptions disgrace! Check out Hotel S. Anselmo and sister hotels - they're ace.

The website is so deceiving, the rooms are not as nice as they look on website the staff are quite helpful the breakfast is ok but I have had better, it is a boring hotel apart from the person in the bar who was very nice, it certainly does not look like a 4 star hotel would not recommend it for students the hotels in the city r better the location was nice in the area of Trastevere the restaurants r k as well.

What a disappointment this hotel turned out to be...4 stars...I don't think so, more like a 2. First impressions were very good. Lovely contemporary trendy spacious room (Deluxe) however it was the smaller details that let the Ripa down. For instance, the mini bar was NEVER stocked up in our 4 night stay. There was no room service menu, having being told it was not possible to have one?!? Mites were in the room swarming around sweet things such as drinks and food. But worst of as, we had no hot water for 2 days...and were told 'It can't be fixed today' and 'These things happen!' Upon complaining, we were brushed off. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Our family (2 adults and 2 boys) stayed there twice this month. Each time we were warmly greeted and treated really well. We enjoyed the concept and the ambience of this hotel and of the area it's located in. We stayed in two different suites of similar quality - beautiful/funky design design (although perhaps a little "used" around the edges). Found the staff great and the breakfasts excellent. Prices were very reasonable. Rooms warm and very clean.

Our room had exposed wires leaking plumbing and it was situated near the stairs so all you heard were people all night long and the disco downstairs (never again would I stay there)

Our room (along with many others) DID NOT resemble any of the pictures on the various websites. I have stayed in nicer youth hostels!! Wallpaper hanging off, damp, broken tiles, exposed wires. If you want to really rough it - stay here and feel really ripped off. Worst still - the management did not care at all!!! STAY AWAY!!!
Room was broken into

All I can really say is that when my family and I stayed at this hotel, our room was broken into and a number of things were stolen. It was clearly an inside job, however the hotel refused to acknowledge a problem. I would stay away from them.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Ripa Hotel

hmmm OK but style over substance

from moonhead99
Stayed here for 2 nights in July for a wedding anniversary. First the good points. Nice lobby, lovely bar very stylish decor. The rooms were very clean and again were very cool to look at. However the quality left somthing to be desired, those special finishing touches could turn this from a stylish but lacking hotel to a great hotel. Toiletries were rubbish, the breakfast was rubbish, I echo the other reviewer Nescafe machine in Italy ?@!!

Also on Saturday night having booked to go to a posh resturant Antico Arco (highly recommended btw) they could not provide me with an iron or any ironing facilities. I got very mad and lost my temper but that really was a joke, a 4* hotel and you cannot iron a shirt. So I had to go to a posh resturant in creased linen shirt which really annoyed me the attitude was so what.

All in all a mixed bag, the area is OK, your only 20 minute stroll down the main road to the Pantheon and there are some nice bars in the general area but it could be so much better than average.

Terrible, Terrible, Terrible!!

We spent three nights at the end of our 12 day coach tour here. We were looking forward to three days of unwinding in a beautiful park setting, but Trafalgar Tours swapped hotels on us at the last minute and dumped us here. Everyone complained at the dirty rooms, the dysfunction of the air conditioning, lights not working, and bad breakfasts. The coffee shop was a joke, a Nescafe coffee machine, for goodness sake? This, in Italy, the home of excellent espresso!!
Our “suite” was dismal and very dirty, stained sofa and carpets...uhhh! The bathroom flooded every time we had a shower and there was no bath plug. The beds were very narrow and had very bad mattresses. There were no hangers in the wardrobe and most of the lights were not working when we arrived. Overlooked an office block, but the noise from the basement was horrendous; first thing in the morning and every 15 minutes or so a trundler with rubbish was pushed along a corrugated drive and then emptied noisily into bins. The lifts did not work; they went in the wrong directions!! My husband was stuck in the basement with no lights and ended up breaking out into the street and coming back into the hotel. The whole area surrounding this hotel is grotty and dirty, and having to walk down a side entrance with luggage to get to the main entrance is unacceptable.
The staff was so overwhelmed with complaints they just gave up. They found refuge in ignoring the hotel guests as much as possible or talking down to them in a very condescending manner.
If you value you mental and physical health give this hotel a very wide birth. This hotel does not deserve ONE star.

It was great!

from AvalonJC
My husband and I stayed at the Ripa for 3 nights. We were upgraded to a suite which was enormous by European standards - we loved it! The staff were generally very helpful, especially the lady at the front desk in the mornings. The location was fantastic in terms of getting into the city. There is a tram stop just a couple of minutes away and it takes about 7 minutes to get into the city. Its a regular service and very convenient. There is also an internet cafe across the street from the tram stop which made checking email and calling home very cheap. We didnt eat the buffet breakfast at the hotel as we prefered to get major sightseeing done in the early morning and would eat after that. As for staff attitudes, I think Italy as a whole is hit or miss with peoples demeanor. We met some wonderful people and then some not so nice people as well. Overall, my husband and I were very happy withour stay at the Ripa and would recommend it to family and friends. We would also stay there again.

Whats wrong with the staff?

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had a great time and had no problems with the staff. We took our 3 yr old daughter with us and felt very welcome.
The hotel was very stylish and comfortable. We especially enjoyed the wine and fruit on arrival.

Terrible staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
The good thing about design is that you get something quite unusual and different from most other hotels. This is even more true in a city like Roma. With the Ripa, I was prepared for a real design experience. I had a 2 bedrooms suite which looked amazing but the lack of comfort of the room, the poor functionality of the equipment and the terrible service and staff made the entire experience a real disappointment. I had a good deal via their web site, but still I expected a 4 star treat and all I had was a Best Western average service, breakfast that matches youth hostel standards, a huge beautiful room with uncomfy seatings and pretentious staff all the way.

Pleaseant Surprise

from ljhog
The hotel seems to be a converted apartment building and looks quite ugly outside. Inside however, it is done in fresh, hip style. Rooms are minimalistic in a very modern and luxurious way - somewhat reminiscent of the "W" hotels chain. At less tahn a hundred Euros including breakfast, I found this very good value for money. The trastevere nighbourhood is good for eating out and ar-hopping in the evenings. Immediate areas of the hotel is very quiet and rooms are quiet.

We just came back from our honeymoon and had an enjoyable stay at the Ripa Hotel. Our room was very large and nice and clean. THe staff wasn't so friendly, but it wasn't such a big deal. The breakfast had more than enough food offered. Also, we were able to get a good deal on their website!

Good hotel, spoiled by unhelpful staff

from janny1
This hotel was an interesting place to stay. We had a family suite - double bed, twin beds in separate room and a separate living area. As we'd driven into Rome on the off chance of finding a family room we fell on our feet with finding this hotel.

The design is interesting but it is a bit of a case of form before function - although the beds were comfortable and clean.

The area is convenient with some good restaurants nearby - although not immediately obvious from main road into Rome centre.

The main drawback to the hotel was the attitude of the staff - our son had a computer game that went missing (probably stolen from the room so watch out!) and the staff were extremely unhelpful saying that this could not possibly happen and refusing to send the game on if it was found later - all in all not good service for a one star hotel let alone a four star.

of course it looked better on the photographs

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel looked terrible from the outside, but was quite nice decorated inside. A little too much design, looked un-finished (cracks in the walls, unpainted parts, dirty lampshades, etc. etc.) Staff indeed is very unfriendly, as I read before. Location seemed to be out of town centre, but it turned out to be a nice location in a real old Italian neighbourhood with cheap and good restaurants. Supermarket down the street. Not worth the price you have to pay for it. Good when you can stay there with a special offer. But after all, it is and it stays Italy, so actually you can't complain too much abou it.

Give it a miss

from Citizens
Reads well but very rough around the edges...and the worst staff imaginable! Location is just a bit too far away from the good stuff.
Spacious rooms with good design but the paper-thin walls and location make it not worth it....

Top Local Tips for Rome

Pathways The city of Rome is a magnificent and beautiful city, but if you are in a wheelchair or on crutches you will have problems getting about

mosquito bites! Bring your bug repellent! There were no screens on the windows of any of the hotels, and I got the bites to prove it.

northwestworld travler the buses are nice in rome and all over italy...we jumped on so many of them and they were much cheaper than the expensive taxis. Get tickets at the bars which are everywhere they are 4 euros all day or 1 euro for a tirp.
