Historical Traveller Reviews of Rex Hotel

Excellent hotel.

from TomDevon
My wife and I stayed here earlier this month and would definately recommend this hotel. Our room was large, spotlessly clean and the shower was very good, however, the room was a little noisy, despite the double glazing! - but we were in Rome !! As has been stated in other reviews, the staff are excellent and there is a good choice of food for breakfast. The hotel is in an ideal location if you are arriving late at night - only 5-10 mins from the station and also good for sightseeing - we walked just about everywhere.

A great staff

from TomCincinnatus
We had a great room, very large and at the end of a very quiet hallway, away from the street. There are two elevators (small but adequate). The room, though large didn't make the hotel, it was the staff, especially Andrea at the front desk. Flavia was very helpful too. Andrea grew up in Australia and speaks excellent English, and more importantly, knows Rome very well. The hotel is located about 10 mins from the main terminal (bus, train, metro) which we used daily. If you're used to walking, many sites are within walking distance. The Colosseum,(a long walk but very do-able) Santa Maria Maggiore Church (close) etc. There are two supermarkets nearby, the one across from the church is larger and better stocked (it's on the lower level). An all day bus pass or metro pass (or both) is worthwhile though. We found the hotel via the net but booked directly with the hotel rather than an internet service. It cost us more,(about 10 Euros/day) but because so many hotels were fully booked, we decided not to take any chances. We also think this resulted in the larger room.Based on the 3 star hotels we saw in the area, Rex deserves the 4 star rating. Remember though, 4 stars in Europe is equivilent to 3 stars in the US. Breakfast was good, sliced, cheese, meat, scrambled eggs, coffee/tea, juices, yoghurt, cereals, pastries, fruit etc. Just a note: A taxi is quite expensive from the airport. Take a shuttle bus(Terravision), from Ciampino, this can be booked at the terminal (if you're flying Easyjet or RyanAir you get a sub-stantial discount by showing your boarding stub). Clean Hotel, Large Room and Awesome Stuff!

from jchepak
This hotel was great. The stuff was very helpful and friendly. When you check it check the room that they are giving you. We signed up for a regular double room, but we recieved much more than we expected. We had a little suite so to say. There was a bathtub and a little living room area.
Room service is great, they make your room every day and make your bed every night. The view from the window is not great, but you don't need a view in Rome, since the streets are so noisy, keep your windows closed.
Breakfast was ok... nothing extravagant. Eggs, sausages, bread, ham, cheese, croissoints, coffee, juice. Better than in other hotels.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone!
Fairly close to Trevi Fountains and the Pantheon... 15 minute walk.
Taxi service is available too.
I give it 4 stars for Italy. Do not expect 4 stars standard as for US...

Nothing special

from Lagosbound
Hotel in good location not too far but far enough from Termini Station. Not much to look at from the outside but the reception area was fairly attractive if small. Our booking was for a double deluxe room but the room we had although neat and tidy was cramped, pretty dark and definitely not deluxe! Bathroom was good although the shower was not the greatest.

Breakfast downstairs in windowless room was good and had a varied menu of hot and cold food. There was also a bar/coffee area although we didn't see anyone use it and the one time we asked for a drink we were told the bar closed at 11. It did seem they were reluctant to open it.

Reception Staff were pleasant and spoke excellent english.

We had torrential rain for 2 of our 3 days in Rome and it was difficult to dry off any wet clothes etc as the heat didn't come on in the room or bathroom radiator at any time.

All in all an average hotel and certainly not the 4 star it advertises at or charges at.

Staff from heaven!!

We spent two nights at the Rex for a birthday treat. The hotel is quite small but this helps the feeling of warmth and cosiness. The biggest plus for us was definately the quality of staff on reception. They were multi-lingual, friendly, helpful and attentive and made the stay the pleasure that it was.

The hotel lacks a restuarant and breakfast is somewhat limited with cereals, fruit and rolls the main options. We were intending eating out anyway so this was not a major issue for us.

The rooms were fully air-conditioned, clean and quiet. They were a little on the small side but perfectly adequate for our needs

Excellent Choice

My wife and I stayed for a week from June 5th 2005. This hotel is excellent in every sense - spacious rooms, excellent location, friendly and efficient staff, very good breakfast. Hope to return at some stage. Can also recommend the adjacent Ristorante del Giglio.

This is the 11th time we have stayed at the hotel Rex since 1976 and we just stayed there for 9 nights in the month of May 2005.The hotel is one of the best in Rome for comfort and location and I may add one of the best buffet breakfasts, which features 4 different juices, breakfast buns of all types, cereal, fruit, scrambled eggs, bacon, ham, cheese, good Italian bread and much more. The services provided by Laura and Flavia and the entire staff is outstanding to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The hotel is located close to the train station and all the historic sites, with a outside market one half a block from the hotel. The resturant Abruzzi which is one block away is one of the best resturants you will find anywhere in Rome and you can't beat the prices. The tourist menu is only 18 Euros for all courses plus wine.I always recommend the hotel Rex to all my friends because it is just like visiting my relatives in southern Italy.Thank you Laura and Flavia & staff.See you soon.

Value for money hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Rex hotel 30 April to 4 May, The location was perfect, close to Metro and Termini and within walking distance of most sights. Plenty of good quality restaurants in the immediate vicinity. Recommend double deluxe room which are very spacious. Standard double rooms are small. All facilities were spotlessly clean. The breakfast was excellent and all staff were very efficient and helpful, always greeting guests with a smile.

Hotel Rex is a good choice

from Dasein
My wife and I just returned from a delightful stay in Rome. I would recommend the Hotel Rex as a moderately priced (by Rome's standards) hotel. The entrance to the hotel is modest and unassuming and its public spaces are small but attractive. Our room, which faced the inner courtyard/parking space, was quiet, very clean, and well-maintained. It was not a large room, but large enough not to feel cramped in any way. The queen size bed was comfortable. The marble bathroom was clean and everything worked perfectly. The breakfast featured a great variety of breads, coldcuts, eggs, fruit, cereal, yoghurt, etc.The staff is multilingual, hospitable, and quite helpful. Given our itinerary for this stay, the location, just about three blocks from Termini and two blocks from Piazza Republica, was ideal. This is not a luxury hotel, but, again, quite acceptable for its price range. We would definitely stay there again.

Looking forward to our return

I stayed five nights at the Rex with my husband during a month-long tour of Italy. The Rex was by far our favorite of all the hotels we visited. We received an excellent rate. Although small, our room was clean and attractive. We enjoyed a marble bath and all the amenities one would expect. Our room overlooked a quiet couryard and provided a nice respite from the bustle of Rome. We were greeted with a smile upon our arrival. For the duration of our stay, we found the staff to be consistently friendly and helpful. A nice breakfast was offered each morning and the service was very good. I would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and look forward to our next visit there.
