We didn't like our room which cost us a whopping 360 Euros a night? Felt like we were in a hospital room. All white, no character, boring. No privacy for bathing, shower and tub in clear view of the living room. Nice amenities though. Lighting in the hallways was non-existant. Front desk staff confused and lacking in knowledge. In a horrible part of Rome, very scary area, even the hotel staff told us to be careful. Would never stay there again, although always stay at Radisson's and this was not in their usual league.

Edgy and Gritty

Just got back from a trip to Rome with DH's work. They were kind enough to arrange the ES hotel for everyone. The staff were very helpful (and good looking) and the design of the hotel is so edgy and chic that we enjoyed every minute. The neighborhood is gritty but that's OK because the hotel is in a world of it own and is well located for buses, metros and especially for trip back to the airport.Too cool.

I just arrived back from a week stay at es.hotel and would defiantly stay at this hotel in the future.

I can understand why there are mixed reviews of this hotel, it is defiantly not a classic hotel in the flavor of a Holiday Inn or the like. The style is as advertised very modern, but the open common areas are a welcome change to the normal stuffy confined common areas of other European hotels.

The area I personally thought was great, there is a little open air market right beside the hotel and a fruit market just beyond that. It's not a tourist area and that defiantly adds to the appeal assuming you are sick of standing in line for everything. I didn't once see anything "shady" going on in the area and I was out at all hours of the day.

You will rely on taxi's a fair amount in this area, but the wait for a taxi is roughly 3 minutes. To put things into perspective, a ride to the Colosseum costs in the area of 6 euros and a trip to virtually any fantastic restaurant will run you maybe 15 euros tops, honestly, if you're staying in this hotel this shouldn't reallly be of concern.

The lobby staff are generally very helpful, but there is the odd language barrier that has to be overcome. The restaurant /lounge staff are also very good for the most part, Saturday evening was the only time I had a lack luster experience with a staff member but the other staff made up for any shortfalls with the one waiter.

They were in the process of updating rooms for the high season while I was there and there was evidence of some minor work being done throughout the hotel, but overall the repair in progress work did not detract greatly from the experience.

Overall I recommend es.hotel for people that are looking for a unique hotel to stay at and are open to different concepts. Myself being a 25 year old gentleman enjoyed my stay greatly, however I know that it is very possible that my parents being more conservative my have felt out of place and intimidated on some level by this hotel. If you're looking for a "touristy" area or hotel, or if you're a "touristy" tourist go somewhere else, if you're tired of standard hotels, or looking for modern comforts and an enjoyable relaxed hotel; es.hotel may be a good fit.

My boyfriend and I just came back from a fantastic weekend in Rome, where we stayed at this beautiful new hotel! Every detail in the hotel is complete. The hotel is very beautiful, the lobby, the courtyard with the lit up windows, the roof, the views from the rooftop and the romantic mornings having breakfast at the restaurant (also on the rooftop). But most important is that for a design hotel the service was great and the staff was very warm and friendly which usually in not the case in design hotels. I will recomend the es hotel to all my friends becuase it is the chicest hotel in all of Rome, no doubt!

The Es. is a beautiful hotel, located in an "alternative" neighborhood which I actually liked because the other typical tourist areas of Rome like the Spanish Steps have become like Disneyland. The staff was quite warm and helpful and offered personal service. For example my luggage was left behind in LA and I couldn't get in touch with the airline (I had tried for 2 hours!), somehow the Concierge (Claudio) made miracles happen and my luggage arrived the next morning. I had no problems throughout my stay (4 days) and will definitely reccomend this hotel to my friends. People who don't like the location should stay in their gardens and stop travelling. I think the es. is a different kind of hotel experience and definitely a fresh alternative to the old hotels in Rome.

Very disappointing

I was at the Es Hotel last summer. Located near the train station, Es Hotel does not look like a hotel at first sight : the lobby is like a museum entrance, quite cold. The corridors are very dark. My room was small (not even enough space to open my luggage). When I wanted to take a shower in the bath, it was impossible to have the good temperature (water was flooded everywhere).

The good thing at Es hotel is the nice swimming pool and bar on the last floor (but on one side you have the view on the railways).

Very poor service, Es Hotel is design hotel where nothing works (I love design hotels, but not Es Hotel). I was supposed to stay 3 nights, I decided to leave the hotel after 2 nights. Big disappointment!

I had read about Es hotel in the Conde Nast Traveller Hot List 2003 where it was featured as one of the hot new hotels, so I had to try it! I frequently travel for business and I have to admit - I am tired of staying in hotels. Es hotel was a different story. It was so special, so unique, so decadant - the bed linens were hands down the finest I've ever slept in. The rooms all had the latest high tech stuff one needs, the high speed internet actually worked (not like some other hotels in Europe that are stuck in the 1970's, technologically speaking!) The best part of the hotel besides the cool rooms and the beautiful design was the top floor which had a great bar and a fantastic restaurant. I'd go back to this hotel tomorrow and stay a month if I could.

Interesting Hotel, Very Poor location

I stayed in the Es Hotel 11th-13 Dec. Like other readers I was tempted
to cancel my reservation at the last minute when I read reviews of it
on this site. The first thing I would say is the hotel absolutely isn't
5*, not even close. Luckily I didn t pay 5* prices so I didn t feel
ripped off. I'd describe it as a 3/4* hotel with aspirations! It is
definitely in need of maintenance in places and the bedrooms are really
tiny. Having said that it is an interesting hotel and if you want to
stay somewhere ultra modern, don't mind being mildly challenged by the
room fittings and are really not bothered by the location then go and
stay. The service is a bit hit and miss. The reception staff could not
be more helpful (suggesting restaurants advising on everything) but a
problem with the room was never resolved and we didn't get our wake up
call on the day we were due to travel home. We did have a very good, if
expensive, meal at the restaurant. Why did we eat there? Because we
were too tired after a day of sightseeing to head back into the centre
of Rome for dinner. This in a nutshell is why I wouldn't go back to Es
Hotel. The location of the hotel is very poor. Reception staff
described the area around the hotel as ethnic - but we saw drug dealing
and felt intimidated walking through the streets around the hotel to
get to the Metro. If you are staying here expect to rely on taxis.

I stayed at the Es Hotel from 22 to 25 November 2003. I arrived early at 8:30 am and found no problem being accommodated. My request to separate the beds into twin configuration was promptly attended to within 30 minutes. The missing in-room DVD player was fitted within the same day. The bed was very comfortable without being too soft. The duvet and cotton pillows were godsend. However, the designer bathroom was more fun to look at than to use. Breakfast was served on the top floor restaurant which overlooks the pool. It featured hot cooked sausages, beacons, eggs and potatoes, apart from the usual continental breakfast items. The bakeries tasted like they were freshly made. Es is a medium size 200+ rooms hotel and there was a convention going on during my stay. Do not expect personalized service in some of the 'boutique' establishments. Some of the staff members were friendly and efficient but not all of them were of this the same calibre. One evening there was a media-filled function at the hotel and the receptionist was busy following the happenings and failed to recognize that I had a message when I enquired. However, if you enter Es Hotel with the appropriate service expectation and that you prefer hotels furnished in contemporary style, you should find the Es Hotel well worth a try.

What a great hotel - what a great concept - what a terrible area!!

This is a fabulous hotel, beautifully designed and elegantly presented.
Having read some of the reviews on this site before we left, I was concerned and almost changed my booking, however the hotel was great (even if some of the design was not fully thought through, it was so-oo refreshing to be in a hotel that wasn't stuck in an 80s time-warp!) Teresa on reception was fantastic and the general atmosphere in the hotel was good. The down side...? it is terrible area, quite depressing and the wrong place for a five star hotel. We specifically booked the hotel for the heated out door pool that wasn't heated and we had an ant invasion in our room(s) - we were moved. The fab electronics and contemporary fixtures and fittings came with no instructions to the extent that trying to turn the bedroom lights on usually resulted in the blinds coming down or the bathroom lights going off or vice versa.
The rooms are supposed to be air conditioned but our experience of four rooms was of a system that failed miseably to control the temperature..... Yet none of that could dampen our pleasure in our stay and experience of the hotel...?!!?

Hotel ES in ROME was very characterless & clinical & looked like a bus station. The facilities in the room were poor, no bedside table, poor lighting, bath too high. The hotel is located on a back street where there was drug dealing & prostitution. in view of this, this hotel is totally unsuitable for a single woman which i was. I booked this hotel with agents 'TOTAL STAY' who claim this to be a fantastic 5*. i would not give this hotel even 1*. I incurred additional expenses as i had to get taxis back to the hotel after 8pm. My purse was stolen on my way from the hotel to the metro station in daylight & I lost £400. This hotel should be regraded as no stars. the location of the hotel & lack of ambience ruuined my holiday. Furthermore it cost me a great deal more as i paid 5* hotel rate for a third class hotel. i lost £400 in my purse. DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL AS YOU WILL BE VERY, VERY VERY DIASSAPOINTED, IN FACT IT WILL RUIN YOUR HOLIDAY.

Top Tips for Rome Bars and restaurants in the tourist hot spots will charge cover and service charges - remember that you don't need to pay these by law! Same old story - local business trying to rip off the tourists! Also, you can avoid the massive queues at the Colloseum by buying a combined ticket at the Palatines. Simply walk straight to the front of the queue - save yourself hours! Walk everywhere!
