I would recommend the Hotel Nova Domus for the following reasons:
.the staff was very helpful and fluent English
.large variety for breakfast - eat as much as you want
.impressive reception area, very clean rooms
.great value for money would definitely go back

If the Vatican Museum is your destination, this is your hotel.

After reading some of the previous reviews I was a bit hesitant as to what I would find here. It was better than I had feared. The room was in good condition and everything worked. Fresh flowers on the table outside the room. You are not in Rome to watch TV, so don't fret the 10 -12 channels you get..only about 2 in English (a lot of British CNN). Found room quiet..except when people talked loudly in the hall.
All of Rome has pickpocket problems..don't blame hotel for this. Did not see any around hotel per se. Location is about 5 - 10 min from Vatican Museum entrance..a another 5 or 10 to St. Peters Square. There is an outdoor market between the hotel and the Vatican if enjoy markets. And if you walk the Vatican Wall around toward St. Peter's, keep your eye peeled across the street (before Otaviano) for the little ice cream shop with no seating and a metal rail out by the curb. Huge portions $1.50 for 3 scoops on a cone..and that is the small!
The neigborhood is primarily residential, so there are not a lot of restaurants...eat across the river at Spanga or Barberini before coming back to your neigborhood. Also the Borgo Pio near the Santa Ana gate of Vatican has food. Chinese Restaraunt across street is not wonderful, but adequate in bad weather. There are more Restraunts down on Julius Ceasar.
Staff is helpful..i liked them a Lot. Rapheal is very nice and works constantly. He is very professional and a great guy and will help you out a lot. Nadia in the contienental breakfast room is very sweet and helpful.
For me, biggest drawback was not having a wide variety of food close by. But, also sort of liked the fact that this area did not seem too touristy. If the Vatican Museum is your primary destination, this is the place for you! (and take your roller skates, the Museum goes on for MILES!!! :>)

Be on your guard for pickpockets

I recently visited Rome 12th January 2005 - 15th January 2005 with my husband and two of our friends (it was our friends 22nd wedding aniversary). Our hotel was ok, we were staying near the vatican city at Nova Domus Hotel.

We visited the collesium, on ther first day and decided to visit spanish steps and trevi fountain the next day.

We travelled on the metro which was very busy indeed, the attractions were very crowded for this time of year. It wasnt until the next day that I discovered that my purse had been stolen, all our cash and credit cards, the victim it seems of pickpockets.

Unfortunately our hotel staff were not very helpful.

Be careful of pickpockets in Rome, apparently the metro is full of pickpockets just waiting for tourists.

You get what you pay for

Definately not a 4 star hotel I would give it 2*.
The breakfast and breakfast room staff was the only good thing about this hotel. The hotel is Not 5 minutes from the Vatican and is very deceiving from the location on the maps shown as it does fail to includes several streets inbetween, but it is near the metro. The staff did speak English which was helpful. My room was cozy but not well maintained; the shower ceiling was peeling paint and leaked making a puddle on the bathroom floor evertime the shower was used. We used the shuttle service that the hotel advertises, that took us to the designer outlets outside of Rome central, paid 65 euros (for 4 people) when we got there and the shuttle left us stranded and after 2 hours of waiting we ended up taking a cab back to the which costed us 55 more euros. The hotel refused to help us and is continuing to promote this service. I do not recommend this hotel at all, there are many others in Rome.

Very, very disappointed

We stayed for 4 nights in the "Nova -------", as it became known, as part of our honeymoon trip to Italy. The first room we were shown to had twin beds, not ideal for honeymoon! It also had faded paintwork and a pipe sticking out of the ceiling (I note that another reviewer mentioned this) When I complained we were moved to a tiny double room. I complained again but was told there were no more rooms available. The next day we were moved to a larger room which had very tired decor and was far from clean. I gave up complaining after this. How this hotel claims to be a 4 star is beyond me. The staff were friendly and helpful though.

Nice for European 3 Star

The hotel is a standard 3 Star European Hotel. The rooms are small, but well decorated, neat, and very clean. Bathrooms were nice. Breakfast was very good, and their open air terrace is quite nice. Very easy walking distance to the Vatican. We walked most of Rome on foot, and were pleased with the location overall. It's a safe, mostly residential neighborhood. There are not an abundance of restaurants in easy walking distance, which is the only caveat if you don't want to venture too far for dinner. La Fiorentina, a few blocks walk, had really great thin crust pizzas. Don't take their dinner recommendations for Terno Secco -- not so good.

A DREAM IN THE BEAUTIFUL CITY OF ROME

I went to Rome a few days ago because friends from France recommended it to me. They passed their honeymoon at the Nova Domus last year and enjoyed their stay at the hotel and its beautiful suites with view to the Dome of St. Peter. It was my first time to Rome and I was really happy to find a hotel so near to the center. I enjoyed the beautiful atmosphere, the really friendly staff and the famous food which you can take on the terrasse of the hotel. My room was more than comfortable and nice.
I really do not agree with the further comments. In my opinion it is really superficial to give such a value to unimportant things like the colour of the carpet in the entrance hall.

My biggest compliments to the Nova Domus hotel!
I will come back!

What a hole!

I am currently still in Italy, and I have just left Rome. I made a reservation through Priceline, so I didn't get to pick my hotel-- I won the grand prize at the Hotel Nova Domus. Yeah, right. This place was terrible! From the patchwork done on the welcome mat, to the stained carpet, to the dirty walls, to the exposed wires hanging out over our door, to the hurricane shutters that wouldn't lift, to the unprecedentedly uncomfortable mattresses... I could actually go on from here! We wound up leaving about 2 hours after check-in to stay at the Daniel's Hotel near the Piazza di Spagna. The location of the Nova Domus is awful. The smell is unbearable. Overall, I would only recommend this hotel to someone I never wanted to speak to on a friendly basis again!

Clearly not a 4 Star hotel

Just returned from Rome(June 18,2004) where we stayed at the Hotel Nova Domus. The hotel was conveniently located within easy walking distance of the Vatican. Interestingly, our room suffered from the same cosmetic defects mentioned in previous reviews by those visiting months ago. Most notable were missing light fixtures and wires hanging from the ceiling, unpainted walls and carpeting that needed cleaning or replacement. Lighting was poor, in part because a number of lamps had burned out or missing light bulbs. Multiple requests over the course of our three day stay for bulbs went unanswered. We also had a cracked toilet seat that we requested be replaced. Eventually, the cracked seat was removed but no replacement seat was provided. Accordingly, our last two days were without a toilet seat. Regretfully, the staff was not overly responsive to our maintenance requests despite multiple assurances that it would be handled.

Wonderful place to stay

We had a wonderful experience at this hotel. From the moment we arrived, the front desk personnel (especially, Raphaello) were very helpful and a great resource. We had a quad room for 4 people and found a nicely decorated, spacious room with a wonderful bathroom (with a jacuzzi tub! ). The location was great. Quiet area, but within walking distance of the Vatican and the Metro station. I would recommend Hotel Nova Domus to anyone planning a trip to Rome.

NOT A FOUR STAR HOTEL AT ALL

I was four days in Rome with my wife (March 1 to 4, 2004) at this hotel. Definitely this hotel is not a four stars hotel. It should be no more than 2-1/2 stars. The room we stayed had a fixture hanging. Also, from the ceiling there was a pipe coming out with some wires, the walls were dirty and in some areas the wallpaper was peeling off. The bathroom didn't have facial paper. The breakfast is average, and the location is fine if you are visiting the Vatican City. Definitely I won't come back to this hotel.

Top Local Tips for Rome

Don't do it!! Don't use a taxi from the airport to the hotels in Rome or the Vatican, as we did this and found it a costly and dangerous affair. Our taxi driver was a rip off merchant, pointing out the window at things to distract us so he could push buttons to up the fare - ended up at €78, when it should've been around €35! We know this as we cottoned on, and he pressed a button as soon as we stopped and tried to bump it up another €10. Instead, get train from airport to city centre, which costs approx €12 and takes about 30mins. Service is regular, and then you have good metro connections for you onward journey. we did this on way back and it saved us money and aggro!

Summer nights Along the river by the Castle clubs set up during the summer. They start at around 12am but really get started at 1am. Drinks are quite pricey but the views are great. Coffee is cheaper when had at the bar, but either way, they're cheap compared to London. Vatican is free to enter on the last Sunday of the month (could be every Sunday - not sure though). Gloss Wine bar had free bar food when you buy a drink from 6.30pm and there are lovely little restaurants around Via del Monte della Farina.

Laundry Pack light. Italy has laundry mats that will wash, dry, and fold your clothes. We had one of these right down the street from where we stayed. Hotel laundry services can be very expensive when traveling.
