Top Local Tips for Rome

Vatican, visiting St Peter's We queued in a reasonable queue to get through security. Then there was another queue which filled the steps and, as we couldn't see any other directions, we assumed this was for the main basilica. We were wrong. To get to St Peter's you had to make your way through this queue (not easy as every other confused person in the "wrong" queue thinks you're queue jumping!), up the steps and at the top, to the left was the main door for the basilica to which there was easy access and no queue. The other queue was to go up into the dome. We wasted alot of time queueing in the wrong queue due to a lack of signs and directions. Very frustrating.

Have hotel arrange taxi pick up at Rome Airport If your hotel can arrange for a taxi upon arrival at Rome's Fiumicino Airport, take advantage of it! They will quote you a fixed rate, which will always be less than "hailing a cab."

Good eats in Rome We ate fabulously the entire time. Here are the best places we went: Piazza Navona for lunch and dinner (any of the places on the plaza), Osteria Ponte Sisto (in Trastevere just over the bridge), Vicolo de Gallo (b/t Piazza Navona and the river), and Taverna Lucifer (just off Campo di Fiori).
