Historical Traveller Reviews of Palatino Hotel
Nice hotel on Via Cavour. A 5 minute walk from the Cavour metro (buy your metro ticket at the Tobbachi shop), and about a 10 minute walk in the opposite direction to the Forum. A spacious lobby, a couple of lifts to the room, a good breakfast (more than croissants, juice, and coffee). Room was good sized, clean, and quiet. It's a nice 4-star hotel.
The Grand Hotel Palatino is a great choice
We were delighted with this hotel. For a reasonable price you get comfortable, clean rooms with all the modern conveniences, a nice view and a great location. Everyone in our party (all experienced travellers and repeat visitors to Rome) said they would gladly stay there again.
I found this hotel through this site and it was a great find. Although I have been in Italy before this was my first time staying in Rome The location is excellent. You are only a block from the Metro stop, a few blocks from the Coliseum. There are many good restaurants in the area (although I don’t recommend the Pizzeria behind the hotel),. Its literally across the street from St. Peter in Chains Church ( just up the steps on the other side of the street). The rooms are on the large side for European standards, but small by US standards. The hotel is very clean and the staff is generally very accommodating. Our room had a tub, shower, twin beds, TV with games and a rooftop view of the city. They work with Greenline tours ( as do most area hotels), they do a good job- but beware; after you hotel pick up you will be stopping at 2-4 more hotels to fill the bus. We took the Vatican museum tour, our guide was an artist and she did an excellent job. After the tour they will stop at a Vatican Religious shop for a quick shopping stop- the prices here are 2-3 time more expensive than just down the street-Take the walk and save! The Breakfast was more than adequate, although it was identical every day including Sunday (try the Salmon). overall the reviews presented here are all accurate and true.
This was an excellent choice for a hotel. It is very close to the Colosseum and an easy walk to most of the other central attractions.
The room was very clean and had an excellent view across the city.
Staff were very friendly and the general standard of the hotel was very high (with a very nice bar area).
The buffet breakfast was the only thing that let down the hotel. The variety of food wasn't great and there was not much left towards the end of the breakfast period.
Nevertheless it was a very enjoyable stay.
This Hotel Was Great!
Just got back from a week in Rome and we stayed at the Grand Palatino Hotel in one of the Superior Rooms on the Non-Smoking Rooms floor. We thought this hotel was great and were very happy with it. The staff was very courteous and helpful. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet and there was alot of food to choose from. My favorite was the fresh fruit salad. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was a nice size. There were plenty of towels in the bathroom and even bathrobes. The room was clean and nice, and the air conditioning felt good after being out all day in the hot sun. The hotel was close to the Colosseum/Forum/Palatine Hill area and a Metro stop was only a short walk away. We would definately stay here again should we ever have the chance to visit Rome again.
This Hotel was superbly located within a 3 minutes from Cavour Station and approx 15mins walk to the Forum, Trevi Fountain and the coloseum and other popular tourist sights. We had a special deal on our room which was quite small, but was nice and clean and the breakfast was great with lots of choices of hot and cold food. Would definitely stay again due to ideal location and distance from metro station.
What everyone else said!
Can't really add much more than the previous glowing reviews. This is a great hotel. Dinners at the hotel restaurant were a little expensive but very good. Found the wait staff to be great. Buffet breakfast was the best I had had in Italy (for a buffet breakfast). We got a superior room which included big, fluffy white bathrobes! Nice way to relax after a day of sight seeing.

Excellent choice, wonderful location. Front desk staff was very helpful and spoke english. We were there in December of 2003 and will return July 2004. The cost is low, so we expected less and we were pleasantly surprised.
Would stay again

We stayed 5 nights at the Palatino. The location was good and I particularly enjoyed having a room that was fairly spacious, which is not always the case in Europe. I prefer a large, modern hotel such as this and am not particularly fond of the "charm" that older facilities can offer...such as poor plumbing. The room was large, quiet and nicely decorated. The breakfast buffet was quite sufficient. One elevator was constantly under repair, which did create some inconvenience (can someone tell me why the elevators in Eurpoe are always so small??). I did not find the front desk staff particularly helpful or friendly. Also, can somoene explain to me why the only English language station in most hotels is CNN?? In all other languages (French, German) there seemed to be at least one station offering entertainment instead of news. However, the few negatives were far outweighed by the location and large confortable room and modern facilities.

I chose this hotel on the strength of the reviews on this site. I have to say most opinions I would agree with - great location, spotlessly clean, well sound proofed ( even has carpet on the doors). However our room was a bed with a border, and the shower (no bath) was so small that if you dropped the soap, you couldn't bend down to pick it up again very easily! and I'm not fat. The other big disappointment was the breakfast. The only hot(ish!) items were scrambled egg and bacon. There were 2 types of cold meat, 1 of cheese, 1 cereal ,1 muesli, 3 kinds of bread/rolls, 4 kinds of fruit, yoghurt. Not exactly a sumptious spread, and I consider not up to the hotel rating of 4 star - not even 3 star! Where the reception staff were very helpful and pleasant, the waiting staff were not of the same calibre. Perhaps those who thought the breakfast good were early birds - we went in at 9.30, finishes at 10am. Did notice they didn't replenish things that ran out, so be warned! Finally, we were on the 7th floor at the back and the views from our room were great. I would consider going again if the price was right.
Top Local Tips for Rome
get this from airport if your hotel is within walking distance as its a great service and leaves you with more euro's to spend cos you will need it
Watch your feet!
Rome can seduce you into walking more than you usually do because there is so much to see and everything is within walking distance (relatively speaking). Be sure that your shoes are supporting your feet properly and not rubbing any one spot. Blisters develop easily and then can slow you down the next day. If they start to appear, wrap/cover the area with dry gauze to prevent further rubbing.
do not be afraid to use public transport. we flew into fumincino airport. .trains run every half hour into rome termini. ,and like wise on the return journey. go to tourist informaion once in rome, they will give you a map ans pinpoint your hotel on it. all the streets in rome are named and unless you have a really heavy bag or a diabilitie, most areas of rome are within walkind distance.Don't be afraid to ask the locals for assistance, most speak some english, and providing you have your map in hand they can point you in the right direction.
