Great place to stay

We just returned from a week in Rome (Feb. 17-24, 2005) and were very pleased with the Grand Olympic. We had two rooms...two adults in 1 room (room 108) and two adults, two teenage children in another (room 107). We didn't request it, but they put us next to each other, which was perfect. It's not easy to find a quadruple room in Rome, but were very happy with the accommodations. I believe the room normally accommodates 3, but they moved the desk/television and added a cot. We still had plenty of room to move for as much time as you want to spend in a hotel in Rome. Our bathroom was a bit bigger than the room for 2. All had fresh linens daily (take your own washcloths though...none supplied). Also had soap/shampoo/cups/tissues/hairdryer/safe/refrig with minibar. No clock though, so might want to take a travel alarm. We were pleased with the breakfast offered: juice/coffee/tea/crouissants/danish/yogurt/cheese/meat/
hardboiled eggs/cereal. If you want fruit, there's a nice open market across the street. Also LOTS of shopping nearby: restaurants, clothing, ATM's, coffee bars, bakery, etc. There is also a grocery store in the basement of the "Coin" store down the street. The Metro is within reasonable distance. The bus stop for bus #81 is nearby, which is handy for the sites. Most you can metro to. Great location to walk to the Vatican Museums (get in line early!!) ,St. Peter's, and Castel Sant'Angelo. Seemed to be a very safe area. The hotel staff was very helpful with any questions. They arranged the ride back to the airport for us. Maid service was excellent. The only slight negative I have is there were times the room smelled slightly. It's only occasionally something you notice, not unbearable. Always smelled fresh and clean after the maid service. We would stay again. I'd just take an air freshener next time. Reading other reviews, I believe the room sizes must vary. Especially if you want a single room.

An average hotel, but not 4 star

Firstly this was not a four star hotel, I would say a standard three stars would be more suitable.

Positives - Clean rooms

Friendly reception staff

Negatives - Breakfast very ordinary - no hot food - horrible coffee
In a noisy area in the daytime
Too quiet at night - very few bars etc..
Satellite TV - just Italian version, no english channels
No early check in

My girlfriend and I stayed here for Valentine's weekend (Feb 11 - 14 2005) and we were impressed with the hotel. OK, it doesn't look exactly the same as the photos taken, but which hotels do? Some of the staff weren't very friendly, mainly some of the kitchen staff, but the staff on show, i.e. reception, concierge and bell-boys were. The hotel was kept very clean and was in good condition. The room we stayed in was pretty small, but it was all we needed as you don't go to Rome and stay in your hotel all the time. The decor was good, sheets and towels were changed daily and the maid service was excellent. The bathroom was pretty small and cramped, but it was nice and clean, well maintained (apart from peeling paintwork above the shower, but yet again, mostiure and paint usually does that!). There was a free safety deposit box in the room, with a programmable keypad instead of a key (good in case you lose your key!). Only thing about our room, which was room 202, was the view out of the window. We looked out to the middle of the hotel, where there was a sky-light (presumably over the kitchen area) and there were old beds stored against the walls. Not a pretty sight!
Breakfast was typical continental breakfast of croissants, cereal, cold cuts, tea, coffee, fruit juice etc. No hot food though. The hotel bar was really expensive though, cost us 16 euros for 2 drinks! Hotel room has a mini bar, which was lots cheaper.
The hotel was a 5 minute walk to St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican and about 20 minutes walk from the impressive Piazza Novona, where there are plenty of restaurants and cafe's. The Colosseum was another 15 minute walk from there.
Overall, my girlfriend and I were impressed with the hotel. The location was good and the cleanliness was excellent. Some staff could do with a bit more 'customer care' training though. We would stay there again based on what we experienced. Good stuff!

Excellent Hotel

Both myself and my partner stayed here for 4 nights (31/01/05 - 04/02/05), we thought the hotel was above average. Having read a few of the comments on this site we were both slightly worried as to what to expect, but found that it was just what we wanted. A clean hotel, our room (502) was cleaned everyday with clean sheets and towels. The room was spacious and the bathroom was nearly as big as the bedroom. Expedia comments that there is Satellite Television, the only English channel we found was CNN, but the amount of time we spent in our room was minimal and it was not a problem for us. The breakfast is standard with the usual rolls, ham, fruit, yoghurts and cereals etc. The hotel is loacted on a very busy street of shops and 5 mins walk from the Vatican museums, plus a 15 min stroll at night to St. Peters which is beautifully lit at night and well worth the walk. The tram and bus stops are nearby and the loaction of the hotel meant that getting a taxi to the furthest away sites such as the colloseum etc ranged from 6-8 euros. The staff are very friendly and helpful, some better than others but still very friendly. The area is safe, not a lot of people out at night and like the other comments the restaurants are pretty pricey near the Vatican, but we found many cafes offering 3 and 4 course lunch deals. We arranged transfers through the hotel before hand and we had no problems with this either, the drivers were very nice and arrived on time. Although maybe not a 4 star, we would definately stay here again.

Do Not Stay There

I have just returned from 4 days at the Grand Olympic Hotel where I was utterly disappointed in this hotel. I stayed in a single room (Room # 100) and there is no way that this hotel could be given 4 stars, there are 2 star hotels in Africa that are better than this one. The pictures and video on Expedia are not even close to what the room actually looks like. There was no shower, except for a bath attachment that could not be fixed against the wall. The "view" from the room was of a store room which you could see through broken glass. The wall paper was peeling off the walls and furniture was falling apart. Housekeeping didn't even bother to clean the room one of the days. I would not recommend staying at this hotel as you will be disappointed. There are better hotels in areas close by.

Great Spot!

We stayed at the here for 4 nights in September and thought it was the ideal location and nice hotel. It was also affordable without being cheap. The room was more than I had expected for the price. The air conditioner worked - but it didn't cool the room off too much. The windows were nice and big - but the hotel is near a busy street so we kept them closed at night. The window also had sound proofing screens on them - they worked very well. There were a few bumps in the walls where the plater had been hit (possibly by a heavy suitcase) and had not been repaired. And taking a shower was difficult since the shower head was not mounted on the wall - it was hand held so you had to hold it with one hand and wash with another. Either that or take a bath. But these minor problems are easy to forget and shouldn't deter you from this hotel. We enjoyed the breakfast every morning. It was just continental style with croissants, cereal and fruit... enough to tide you over until lunch. The front desk was very helpful. They were able to call and confirm reservations for us with our tour company. The hotels location is just a few blocks from the Vactican but it's too far to walk to the other attractions. However, just a few blocks away is the subway/metro. This was an easy and affordable way to get around. I suggest buying the day pass - you can go back and forth as many times as you like for one price. However, I don't suggest trying to carry heavy luggage onto the subway. There are several steps up and down into the terminals that it's better to take a taxi. And be careful - when we arrived at the airport, a taxi driver took us to the hotel - however, he never put his meter on and charged us 90 euro for the trip! According to the front desk clerk at the hotel, it should have only been around 45 euro for the trip!!!! Overall, I was pleasently surprised with the hotel and I would definately stay there again.

We stayed here for 6 nights in October 2004. It was the hotel chosen by our tour and we took the tour extension in Roma.

The hotel location is very convenient for Vatican (3 blocks away) and shopping is right on Via Cola (the main street outside the hotel). There's a neighborhood green market in the large white building across the street.

The first room we stayed was a little noisy, facing Via Cola. We asked for a room away from that street and got it the next night. No noise problems after the 1st night.

The rooms are of a good 3-star. It's hard to characterize the whole hotel as each floor of the hotel was going through different stages of renovation and our rooms were recently updated.

The night manager can be easily ruffled, but he's helpful in most cases. The rest of the night staff might not speak english. The entire day staff are fluent in english.

Olympic Aurem Clean Convenient and Helpful

Had a triple room. THe room was attractive, but a bit kitschy. Not a problem, though! The underlying plaster walls were covered with some form of red felt or brocade, no doubt to mask aging walls. The room was clean, and the bathroom was recently remodeled and very very nice. It was great to have a small lockbox in the room. Convenient to a bus stop which is one street above the hotel and 2 blocks over. Metro, too, is about 4 blocks away. Staff was helpful on giving pricing guidelines for cabs and other attractions in Rome.

Near the hotel - Eat at the restaurants near the Metro, not towards the Vatican. They are ALL RIPOFFS charging 200-300% over other "self serve" restaurants.

This hotel is recommended.

Charming hotel!

This lovely hotel made up with service for what they lacked in space. The service was wonderful...nothing was too much to ask. The staff was mulitlingual. The rooms were on the small side but perfectly clean and very nicely decorated. The breakfast was average- the typical ham, cheese and danish. The metro station was several blocks away from the hotel, but easy to find.

What can I say?

It's a great hotel, 5 minuted walk from the Vatican, 10 minutes walk from to Metro stations and on a main road with some great shops, such as Furla, Calvin Kien and Italian High Street stores.

I booked via Expedia and requested a small fridge - and got it.

the staff speak good English and helped me out with Transport advice and called me a cab back to Termini.

My room was a bit small, but it was a single - and I didn't go Rome to stay in my hotel room!
The room had a double bed, air-condtioning. The bathroom had a tub and bidet with a small hairdryer by the basin.

The linen and towels were changed every-day and the room was so quiet, I slept through the night!

I was there from 19 September 2004 till 23 September 2004.

I'd recommend this hotel to anyone!

Top Local Tips for Rome

agree price before hand According to notices in Ciampino airport, since the en of last year all taxi rides from that airport should be 30 Euros. However, we were charged 40 Euros and my Dad was charged 50. Just agree what the price will be before hand when you get a taxi from the airport!

Metro Use it as much as possible to get around (saves the feet) - just take care of your valuables and be aware. It's only 1 Euro for 75 mins and can be used on buses and trains - get on and off as often as you like! 4 Euro for day ticket. make sure you have change as the machines tend to not give change.

Roma Pass The Roma Pass is worth the purchase and the metro is very easy to use.
