This has to be the worst four-star rated hotel in all of Europe. The only way you could find the tiny rooms comfortable is if you were anorexic midget. Plus it's dirty.

This hotel was lovely. Well situated for sightseeing. The room was of a nice size & clean. The hotel staff were very friendly & helpful.
The restaurants recommended by the hotel were wonderful. Wished we lived there to go back to them.

We sttayed here for four nights. The hotel is clean, the staff are friendly and very helpful and the breakfasts are great served on the terrace with wonderful views. It is situated not too far frm the Via Veneto and there are plenty of restaurants and trattorias nearby. However the bedrooms are very small making it difficult for two people to move around and the shower in our room was also very small. I do not think that I would use it again.

Lovely boutique hotel, perfectly decorated, not really in the centre of Rome (especially at night you need to take a taxi to return to the hotel if you are in the centre), but really a 'classy' choice.
The hotel staff was very helpful and friendly and that is a thing to remember. The rooms are very clear, the lobby is a beauty! The breakfast was just perfect: Not everything there, but the delicious sweets and the variety of croissants really make the difference, and also the
magnificent view from the lovely terrace where breakfast is served. The receptionists helped us a lot in everything, how to move in Rome, they even arranged us a good price for a taxi to transfer us to the Fiumicino Airport (50 euro only), whereas taxi drivers usually ask you more than 60 or even 70 euros, especially if they see that you are a stranger and unaware of the policy and prices.
The only thing that I thought of as the only 'con' of "Marcella Royal" is that some rooms are extremely small. At first they put us in room #630, where the bathroom was certainly not a 4* one, not even 2*, but after we asked the for a more spacious room, they said "no problem" and we moved to another (#612)which was pretty. Every night they used to leave us a candy on the top of our pillows with a "Buona Notte" message, which I really found it very very sweet.

Very clean, nicely decored, great city views, easy access location and friendly staff. Rooms are small but all pleasantly decorated with great bathrooms and plenty of closet space. The staff spoke English and was very helpful. I stayed 3 days while in Rome for business (and pleasure) and would absolutely stay there again if the price continues to be competitive as it was this time.

Outstanding Value

from cellapink
My husband and I stayed at the Marcella for 4 nights last month during our 18-day trip to Italy. We were extrememly pleased with all aspects of the Hotel. The staff, especially, were wonderful. The rooms are small, but well-furnished. We took public transportation with ease to all the sites of Rome from a block or two of the hotel. We loved the rooftop breakast/bar, as other reviewers did. Every morning we watched a hot air balloon ascend above the rooftops from this peaceful terrace. I had found an outstanding rate on one of the travel websites (almost $100 Euro less than the rate quoted on many of the other sites). My only reason for not rating a "5" is that I felt the lobby could have been better furnished and a bit more inviting. We will definitely stay there again when we return to Rome.

Highly recommended

What an amazing place.

As far as facilities go, it's really a 3 *** hotel , but the staff really make it so much more.

The piano bar on the roof is amazing for breakfast and evening drinks. The hotel is also walking distance from many popular tourist sites.

When I stayed, free Internet access was available via a PC on the 6th floor.

The best part were the reception staff. They are even good enough to recommend some restaurants which also had good reviews, and they even phoned up and made a reservation for us, and called a taxi and wrote down directions. You don't get such personal service at many other places.

There weren't any negative points. The standard rooms are quite small and basic, but they are adequate as you would be spending most of your time outside of the hotel anyway.

Will definately stay there again.

A Terrific Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We picked the Marcella Royal after reading about it on the internet and, to be honest, we were slightly concerned about our choice because we couldn't find a single negative review on it from anyone. This is highly unusual, even for the 5 star luxe hotels. Well now we understand. This is a terrific, little hotel. The staff were knowledgeable, courteous and always helpful. This includes the front desk personnel, cleaning staff and, of course, Salvatore, who did a masterful job of bartending at the roof garden. We started our trip with 4 days at the Marcella and then returned for our final night in Rome after travelling to Capri and Sorrento. We were greeted like old friends upon our return. Our next trip to Rome will not be complete without a stay at the Marcella Royal.

An excellent choice

from PTCanuck
This hotel is a gem. Although our room was small, like most in smaller hotels in large European cities, it was well planned and appointed, with plenty of closet space, so we never felt cramped. The room, like the public areas, was tastefully decorated and quiet. The bathroom was excellent, with plenty of towels and amenities, and good lighting.

The service at the Marcella is impeccable. The staff are friendly and helpful, and speak fluent English.

The hotel has a lovely roof garden, perfect for warm, late-summer evenings. An ample and delicious buffet breakfast is served there every morning.

If you are looking for a quiet, comfortable, friendly place to return to after the rigours of Roman sightseeing, then make sure you book at the Marcella.

Incredible Experience!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed at the Marcella Royal Hotel from October 7, 2004 through October 11, 2004. I can honestly say that we have never had such a superb experience as we did at the Marcella, in America or abroad. The room was large and beautiful, done in gold and blue tones, with heavy drapes as well as shutters to keep the light out early in the morning. The bathroom was also really spacious, with a great, strong shower! We also had a (very) small balcony which looked out over the quiet street below. We loved, loved, loved the roof top bar! Lots of flowers and plants and tables with umbrellas. However, as previous TripAdvisor reviewers commented, the truly wonderful experience of the Marcella was the staff. Salvatore, Pietro, Christiano, Alessandro and Alessio were not only knowledgable and had great dining suggestions, they were by far the friendliest and warmest individuals we have encountered during a hotel stay. We truly believe that they were glad to see us when we came back to the hotel after being out all day! This was our third trip to Europe in three years and each time we have used TripAdvisor to book hotels. We normally do not place too much emphasis on comments regarding the staff unless there are many negative comments (we look for charming boutique hotels for a reasonable price), but after staying at the Marcella, we have seen how it makes all the difference. It was truly a wonderful experience all the way around.

Royal Marcella - Pleasant stay - good find!

from LisaCatal
The Royal Marcella hotel was a very quaint, pleasant hotel, and we enjoyed our stay immensely. Our room and bathroom were both large and clean, and we even had a small balcony. The rooms had shutters and drapes and stayed really dark, so sleeping was great. The rooftop bar and breakfast were both terrific. The view was relaxing, and we loved the quiet neighborhood. We walked to just about everywhere we wanted to go, although we did take taxis one or twice. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful, and I would definitely stay there again.

Excellent experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
We spent five nights here, had a lovely time, nice breakfast, scenic roof garden with music, drinks and sunsets. We asked for and received an upgrade to a junior suite. The front desk people, especially Michele, were helpful and kind. Whenever there was a minor problem, it was resolved immediately. AC was good and cold, a relief from truly hot days. Free internet access. Close enough to all the main sights, but in a quieter section. We would definitely return.

Great Place - just what we wanted!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We added 1 day on to the end of our trip to "do" Rome. The Marcella was PERFECT for us, within short taxi's to everything, near train station but in great area. They were very warm and charming at the front desk. The rooftop lounge was perfect for a casual dinner after our long day. Drinks and live music just made our last evening special. HIGHLY recommend - great value.

Quality Hotel

from NJGlover
We booked this hotel on strength of reviews on Trip Advisor. I agree with all the previous reviews. We stayed four nights, starting 22th July, in room 430. The room was quite small, but very clean, quiet and nicely decorated. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Its location is in a quiet street, slightly outside the main tourist area, but it has several excellent resturants on Via Flavia very nearby. It is also very conveniently placed for access to and from Rome's main railways station, Termini. However, the Marcella's main attraction is a superb rooftop bar with beautiful views of Rome's skyline. The perfect place to wind down after a busy and hectic day.I would not hestiate to recommend this hotel and would certainly stay here on a return trip to Rome.

THE VERY VERY BEST

from RoryHeidi
This was by far the best hotel we stayed at in Italy - the roof-top piano bar is great. The rooms are very nice - but the reason to stay here is the staff. They are unbelievable - the management was so helpful, friendly and well - really I have never stayed at a place that was as well managed and caring - its just unbelievable. Stay Here in Rome! You will love it! Its also pretty close to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain and the US Embassy - in case you have an emergency. I loved it!!!! And will return!

Top Local Tips for Rome

Busses Ask at the desk of your hotel how to get around by bus. Rome has a mapquest-type system that can tell you how to get from place to place only by bus or tram. It's cheap (1 Euro) and easy!

Mass If you want to attend an English Speaking Mass while in ROma, the Santa Sussanna is just down the block, and on the way you will pass Da Giovanni. This was our favorite meal in Roma.

taxi rides learn how to say as one travel book suggested, "If you don't slow down I am going to throw up."
