Best customer service ever!!!

Hotel Madrid is advertised as a 3 star hotel, but I would definitely give it 4 stars. The staff who spode fluent English, went above and beyond the call of duty for us everyday!! Directions, maps, calling taxis, sending up breakfast on the day we arrived as the buffet had already closed, and they humored my husband as he daily butchered the language, because he insisted on speaking his "version" of Italian. The location is fabulous, we only had to take a taxi once, we walked almost everywhere, and took the metro 2 times, which is literally around the corner. The room was cleaned so impeccably everyday, and the daily breakfast was so hearty that we often skipped lunch. I am planning to return to Roma every year as it was the most memorable vacation I've ever had, and will only stay at Hotel Madrid!! By the way, the all male Italian staff is also extremly handsome(easy on the eyes, ladies)

Hotel Madrid was everything we were hoping for our visit to Rome..Special thanks to Alberto and Luciano for making us feel right at home..Another thank you to Fulvio for telling us how to go to Florence by train when our private tour did not show up..The room was comfortable for our family or 5 (we had the 2 room suite) and the location could not have been better..The roof garden breakfast was a perfect way for my husband and I to start our day together while our kids slept in. Would definitely recommend this hotel and hope to return to it one day,,
Loved the Hotel Madrid

The location is the best. Very central and in a quiet street. Very clean hotel, nice bedrooms, nice breakfast, friendly staff. Alberto Julio you are the best. The price for the location is really good. This was my third time in Rome and in each time a changed hotel but for now on I'll stay at the Hotel Madrid for the rest of my life.

Great for families in Rome

This hotel was a great deal for our family. We booked a suite since we were traveling with our 2 boys age 5 and 6. Our room had a very nice bathroom, a king size bed and a seperate room with 2 twin beds. The windows are the sound blocking kind and the shades black-out pretty well. The best part about this hotel is the breakfast room. It is on a beautiful roof terrace and a nice lady makes up cappucinos hot and fresh to order. A nice spread of breads, cereal, fruit, eggs and yogurt gets you going. If you are traveling with children, this is ideal because a good start makes all the difference. Our breakfast was included and I am sure it saved us about 30 euros a day, maybe more! The staff was nice and helpful, but they spoke very limited english. Our Air conditioning worked so well, we left it off all day and only used it at night. The location is terrific, near shopping and the bottom of the spanish steps. We would absolutely stay here again.

We stayed here for 2 days. The room was for 5 people. The room was clean, and the bathroom was huge for Italy standards. Breakfast was also good which included boiled and scrambled egges, pastries and more. The concierge, Alberto was nice and helped the whole time and the booking process when we called from the U.S. This place should get a higher star rating than a 3 star.
And the location you cant beat. It was only a 3 min walk from the Spanish Steps. You can beat the price. I would recommend to others.

Beware confirmed reservations

Beware of this hotel! Had a confirmed reservation in writing, made directly with the hotel, for a double room with twin beds for two people on Saturday, Sept. 9 -- it was "White Night" in Rome, and extremely busy. I reconfirmed the reservation with the hotel for one room with two beds prior to arrival. The room wasn't ready when we arrived that morning, but the desk agent stated that he had our room with two beds and told us to return in two hours. On return, we were shown a small room immediately behind the breakfast area with one very small double bed. When we stated that this was not what was confirmed and was unacceptable, the response was that "it was all they had." Despite the fact that they had confirmed our room with two beds on initial arrival, they blamed the problem two hours later on their reservation system which made no sense. The hotel did call around to find a room located elsewhere; the only room available with two beds was in a lesser hotel that we had passed on when making original reservations. The handling of this was inexcusable. Would never even consider booking at the Hotel Madrid again after this experience.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for a family of 4 in Rome

Our family of 4 (kids ages 12 & 15) stayed for 4 nights in mid-July and Hotel Madrid proved to be our favorite of all we stayed at while in italy. (Plus it was the least expensive!!)
The reception staff were the most friendly and helpful we found anywhere, the breakfast buffet was definately the best with a nice view of the Vatican (be sure to ask for a capaccino or espresso), and our suite was well designed and recently renovated with 2 adjoining bedrooms, a nice bathroom, and it was very well air conditioned. The rooms were very quiet at night, the kids loved the chaise style beds, and my husband and I enjoyed our private room.
Hotel Madrid's location was ideal, near the high-end boutiques, 2 mins walk to Spanish Steps, 7 mins to Trevi fountain. For a 3 star hotel, it beat a 4 star we stayed at in Venice. I do not think you will be disappointed at all. We look forward to a return stay.

Good location but...

I stayed at Hotel Madrid with my Mother and Mother-in-law.
Our rooms are connected sharing one bathroom with nice size bathtub.
Location is great ! Few steps away from Spanish step and Trevi Fountain.
Problem we had was a taxi driver.. I guess contracted with the hotel.
As you know, it's very difficult to find taxi cab in Italy, especially around dinner time.
So, we asked front desk to call a cab. The driver came in 5 minutes.
We had a reservation as a restaurant in Trastevere (the other side of Tevere River).
But driver was making hundreds of excuse not to take us to our restaurant.
Instead he took us to a nothing restaurant close to Pantheon.
Ended up eating there...but was very big mistake. Bill came to EUR200+ !
But was too late. Driver then drove us back to the hotel and charged us almost $80 roundtrip only took us about 20 minutes each way.
When we asked for a cab to go to airport, his cab company's car came again.
But this time, I made sure with fron desk (Also have them in writing) flat charge to the airport. (EUR35) When we got to the airport, cab driver told us fare is EUR70. But We only gave him EUR35, showing him the writing from the front desk. He was calling the owner (Same guy drove us to the restaurant night before !) and I clearly told him what front desk person told us.
Becareful, don't ask hotel front desk to arrange for the cab (We assume they get 'Kick-back" from driver). If you walk to the Spanish step or Piazza Silvestri (2 minutes walk), you will find many taxi waiting.
Breakfast was not the best in this hotel either, Overall, only good thing about this hotel was it's location.
I would stay in Trastevere area next time.

Top Local Tips for Rome
Departing Flight Leave lots of time to get to the airport, you MUST be there at least 2 hours before the departure time. The trains / metros are slow, and there is lots of traffic.
rome airport is a nightmare Whatever you do, when departing Rome make sure you arrive at the airport at least 3 hours ahead of time! There are very few signs and NO ONE to ask for help. It takes awhile to figure out where to check-in. Once you do, then you have to get to the gate through several other long lines for passport checks and security checks. All I know is, I wanted to kiss the ground when I arrived in organized, air conditioned, civilized Newark Airport!
Lunch tip Goto the park above Piazza del Popolo to have lunch. Have a picnic with a lunch from the superarket deli (most will make a sandwich for you, take some water or juice and fruit) or eat at the impressive looking restaurant overlooking the city - it is actwully not that expensive. ask for the lunch menu. there are 2 sides - dinning and lounge. The longe menu is cheaper but the quantities sounded small. the dinning area serves delicious cold salads in good portions - try the tubettini with basil and mozeralla - it is amazing and not what I expected. A very memoarable experiance. After lunch rent a motorized bike for 2 or 4 people and tour the park -it is very nice.
