Great, with a few reservations

We stayed in Hotel Locarno for 3 nights during July 2004. The staff was helpful and pleasant. The garden is beautiful and the breakfast plentiful. The location is very convenient. The street the hotel is on is quiet. My room had a problem with the floor...it had an annoying bubble. The air-conditioning was not cold enough for USA standards. I would recommend this hotel for a lovely stay in Rome.

We just returned from a 3-week Italo-Austrian tour with Rome being the first stop for a week. I did research from tripadvisor.com and Gourmet Magazine's famous Rome Collector's Edition (March, 2003). We loved the Locarno for its 1920's townhouse atmosphere. We stayed in a deluxe room in the new annex (310 euro). The room, foyer and bathroom were spacious and facing the street, and were well air-conditioned. Breakfast was fantastic (don't worry about trying to find better cornetto's) and Augustino, the Neopolitan barman was a wonderful conversationalist. All in all, you get the feeling that you're on the set of an Merchant Ivory film, with ease and friedliness.
We loved the mixture of European business travelers and American tourists. The highlight of our trip was the 6 AM bicycle ride with bicycles supplied by the hotel. (I was scared at first, but realized that most of Rome is asleep at that time).
We loved, loved, loved the restaurant "La Matricianella" which is walking distance away and famous for its fried ricotta, "annimale" and buccatini with bacon and tomato sauce. Can't wait to go back - maybe we will splurge for a suite next time!!!

Highly Recommend the Locarno

The Hotel Locarno was my third accommodation in Italy and was a breath of fresh air. The staff is lovely and attentive. The bar/lounge area is absolutely charming with a speak-easy sort of feel and yummy free hors d'oeuvres in the early evening. Having been there in February, the wood burning fireplace was a welcome reprieve I looked forward to every night.
My room was in the 'annex' across this street and I loved it. After having checked the reviews on TripAdvisor.com and read about the noise, I was sure to ask for a quiet room - and that it was. I thought the decor was lovely - and it's more modern than the Locarno's main hotel.
What else? The breakfast buffet was good. And, there's a free computer to access the internet for hotel guests.
This was my second hotel in Rome (my first was Hotel Due Torri) and for just a little bit more money, the experience was a whole lot more sumptious. I'd highly recommend this hotel.

Stay, but with reservations

My wife and I stayed at the Locarno, an older property in a good location near the Piazzz del Popolo. The hotel is in good condition with charm (the lift is very old fashioned). Our room, while comfortable, was on the street with no air conditioning, so the windows are open. If you know Rome, you know the sound of the car horn, and one of the nights was the celebration of the local soccer championship. We heard every horn sound in Rome for about two hours (is this why people sleep from 1:30 to 5? I understand some of the newere rooms have interior views without the noise, and I would recommend exploring those options before accepting a room without air.

My husband and I just returnded from a 5 night stay at the Hotel Locarno. After doing much research this hotle was a great deal for $190 euros.
The rooms were typical size of hotels in Italy, small and cozy. we switched to an inside room as the street was a bit noisy. Breakfast was exceptional! Eggs and bacon and all the sides you could want! Ask for the fresh sqeezed o.j.!
Staff was extremely helpful in arranging transportation to and from airport, and any other questions we had!
I would highly reccomend, good value for the price!

Beautiful and friendly, but not practical

Hotel was beautifully decorated and the staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Breakfast was lovely, and great that it lasts 'til 11am for us lazy bones.
Our room however was at the front of the hotel onto the street and it was also very warm, but the noise from the street stopped us from having the windows open, and the fan (not air con) was too noisy to leave on at night - so we sweltered - and that was in rainy weather - I can't imagine what it would have been like in summer.
Location is great though with all of Romes highlights easy walking distance.

Loved Locarno

I read all of the reviews of this hotel, and stayed there for 2 nights April 2004. It was fabulous! We were upgraded to a suite, as we had asked for a quiet room upon arrival. The decor is just what one would want from a Rome hotel. We knew that we were in Rome, but there was every comfort.The bar served great appetizers with the drinks, and the breakfast was the best we experienced in Italy. Bed was great, and my 6'4" husband is picky. Can't say enough good things about Locarno. Absolutely charming. Please email me if you have questions.

We stayed at the Hotel Locarno from April 16-22, 2004 and we loved every minute. The room was furnished with antiques and floral wallpaper, which gave it an Italian flare. Both the room and bathroom were VERY clean. The staff was exceptional. They arranged taking us to and from the airport, and they were very accommodating.
The food in the restaurant was, also, exceptional!
The only drawback...rooms overlooking the street are very noisy...be sure to ask for a room overlooking the courtyard.
We difinitely will stay there again on our next trip to Rome!

Rooms were tiny, bathroom (couldn't even shave my legs) The shower was a tiny stall. The room itself was very depressing. Things were missing from my suitcase. Room location was so noisy, breakfast room full of NATS. Could be a wonderful hotel if given some care. Staff Okay, some were caring , not enough of them though. Would not stay there again!!!

We booked our stay at the Locarno after reading all the reviews and we can honestly say, that our stay at this hotel has been excellent. Most importantly the great location, right by the Via del Corso and in walking distance of all the sights, but also the helpful staff, comfortable bed and excellent breakfast have made our stay a brilliant experience. If you are looking for faults you might want to point out that there was no bathtub (shower only), and the decor of the wallpaper certainly will not be to everyone's liking. However, the room we stayed in was in the annex, which only opened in July 2003, therefore the room was newly decorated and clean, and we can highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for accommodation in Rome.
Top Local Tips for Rome
The Palatine Hill Try to avoid approaching the Palatine from the Circus Maximus side - big roads there. Get into it from the Forum. The Palatine gardens and the views from there are really fantastic. Also recommended - Keats's grave in the Protestant graveyard in Testaccio, the Aventine Hill area and generally walking round and through the whole main historic area of this great city.
Colosseum Get a ticket at the Palatine (Palatine and Colosseum)- you'll still have to queue at the Colosseum a bit but it will be shorter than with no ticket.
Open top bus Ive never taken an open top bus which incorporates the various sights but due to the heat and time restraints we did. It was excellent - a great way to orientate oneself; do a recky of the city and escape the gruelling heat (its airconditioned). Good value also at euros15 for hop on hop off ticket for 12 hours.
